While the loss of Werth hurts, Domonic Brown is ready to take over and I think he's going to be very good. He won't make up for Werth's numbers this year, but I'm excited to see him get a starting role.

Interesting tidbit... Rosenthal discussed the Phillies interest earlier today and mentioned that while they have a lot of cash tied up already for next season, most of that comes off the books in 2012, making it likely that they could backload a deal for Lee and get reasonably close to what he's looking for.

Obviously, he'd still leave a lot of cash on the table, but pitching in that rotation has to be a major draw for a hundred different reasons.

A couple of NY reporters (Sherman' date=' Heyman) are saying Philly. Maybe he prefers the NL; maybe it's Santana all over again.[/quote']

Jog my memory but wasn't Santana going to New York a product of the Twins f***ing up severely as opposed to Santana's desires? I honestly don't remember.

I'd love to see the Red Sox work out a trade with the Phillies or Rangers to pick up a reliever or a RH bat and free up money to help one of those 2 teams sign Cliff Lee. It'd be a great way to kill 2 birds with one stone.

They're trying to unload Blanton right now, the guy they signed when they didn't extend Lee.

Another note on salary, if the Phillies do sign Lee they would probably try to trade Joe Blanton, who has 2/17 left on the books. They may have to eat some salary but it would still make a dent.

(SoxSport beat me to it)

Doesn't surprise me. He pitched well for the most part in Texas and Seattle, but he was unstoppable the year before that in Philly. Facing off against #2 starters in the NL, he'd probably win 18-20 games even if the Phillies offense flops.

It was Yankees vs Red Sox. Then, all of a sudden it was the Mets --for much less than the Red Sox or Yankees were offering. Maybe some suction to the NL going on there--away from the AL East. The Red Sox dodged a bullet. Maybe the Yankees did, too.

Smoltz/Glavine/Maddux/Neagle. But i digress.

Now if Lee leaves all that money to sign with Philly, Amaro Jr should be entitled to getting his penis sucked by every Phillies fan on the planet. Jesus.

And if Lee not signing with the Yankees causes Pettite to not sign, and if Sabathia opts out of his contract, I think that everyone in Boston should give Amaro Jr. a hummer too.

No doubt he's better off in the NL. He looks at Halliday. Plus his own experience with the Phillies.

Plus he looks at the Red Sox lineup, and says no thanks.

Yep.

Go ahead and sign with Philly. I still like the Sox.

This is actually incorrect.

Lee was better in Seattle (2.34 ERA, UNGODLY 0.94 WHIP), than Phillie (3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) and Texas (3.98 ERA, 1.058 WHIP).

In fact, you could make a case that, had he not gotten injured last year, he would have also pitched better in Texas than Philly.

I stand corrected. But when it mattered most, he was the best pitcher on the diamond while wearing a Phillies uni. If Philadelphia had even one starter worth a s*** in 09 to step in behind Lee, the Yanks definitely would have had a much harder time winning that Series.

At any rate, Lee's time in Seattle will be quickly forgotten if it already hasn't.

It's (almost) official: Lee has reached a tentative agreement with the #Phillies, he is waiting to see if the #Rangers will offer 8yrs.

From Sherman...

Lines surely being practiced by #Yankees execs at this hour: "We were scared of a 7-yr deal with this guy anyway." "Good, this let's us see our young starters." "Lee was a luxury not a necessity."

Fair enough. He was clearly the best pitcher in the 2009 playoffs, much to Jacko's dismay, who spent the whole ofpostseason pimping Sabathia as superior to Lee. Lee has obviously been the better pitcher for the past three years, and last two years in the playoffs, but oh well.

Unbelievable. This off-season just keeps getting better.

I cant see that happening .... CC would lose money doing so
