I think Carpenter would have a tough time going back to the AL East. He was pretty bad there before. Halladay eventually figured it out in Toronto. Carpenter never did. Obviously, he's not the same pitcher he was back then. But he's also getting up there in years now. I think what Ben Sheets did in Oakland is what you'd get from Carpenter with the Yankees.

And for BSN, I doubt the aging process of the team is in his mind at all. Actually, I think what might make veterans a little less excited about staying is the youth movement that is coming. Especially if the Yanks strike out on a big time deal for a pitcher over the next 5-6 months. Regardless, my hope was that the Yanks could land Lee and keep this ride going. Without Lee and Pettitte, we still can be a wild card and probably will be the wild card. But injecting some youth into the picture isnt a bad thing

Yankees agree to terms with Soriano...

Really sad to see to see our 1st roudner gone, but glad to have Soriano on board.

Might be time for people to stop referring to Jon Heyman as just Scott Boras' mouthpiece, and instead acknowledge that he has really good sources and knows his stuff.

Heard this: As of 6 p.m. on Thursday, the Yankees are not interested in Rafael Soriano. They've seen a lot of $ squandered on set-up men.

---

I laughed at that.

SI_JonHeyman soriano deal is pending physical. yankees pen with mariano, soriano, robertson, joba, feliciano should be baseball's best.

I hope they move Joba to the rotation though. Heyman says the Yankees have $20 million more left in the budget so we'll see where that goes. Would be nice to add a Francis/Duch type guy and Joba to battle with Nova and prospect for the 4th and 5th spot.

He is kind of Schizo. Went in a matter of Hours saying there was no Chance for the Sox to get Gonzo, then they were gonna get him.

I don't remember him saying there was no chance that the Red Sox would get Gonzo, only that an extension was unlikely and it might kill the deal.

Definitely, I think that should be the plan as well.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the deal will be worth a whopping $35 million over three years.

High price tag but certainly worth it to have Soriano lock down the 8th and Rivera in the 9th, I wouldn't expect more then a couple blown saves between those two.

They have two slots in the rotation that they need to fill. Nova and Mitre are not going to cut it. Will Joba be moved back to the rotation? Their pen is very deep with Mo, Soriano, Joba, Feliciano and Robertson.

Joba to the starting rotation now?

I hope not, We all know how that worked out. Plus I believe the Yankees have ruled out using Chamberlain as a starting pitcher in 2011 because his pitches have greater velocity when he pitches in relief.

I really hope they move joba to the roto. Competition with nova and someone like duch/francis/etc in there would be nice. They've got another 20 million left to spend, let's spend it wisely.

Mo closer

soriano set up

logan/pedro lefties

krob 7th inning

ST battle between sisco, cotts, prospects within our system, etc.

mitre?

Blown away by this. But I do love it. Any lead after 7 is a win pretty much and it locks up Soriano as our future closer as well when Mo hangs em up. And the rest of the pen wasnt too bad either with Robertson, Joba, Feliciano and Logan as well as Marte out there. I think this might indeed mean Joba moves back to the rotation, which I dont agree with.

Well, if we cannot go deep into games with our rotation, we'll convert all of our late game leads into wins. Makes sense. We just need one more starter by the time the playoffs start and we should be in good shape

After missing out on Lee, Cashman said "Plan B is patience", I wouldn't be surprised if they trade for a quality pitcher around the trade deadline when teams that are out of it are listening to offers.

As it stands' date=' right now, [b']the Yankees will make the playoffs[/b]. Their addition to the rotation needs to come before the playoffs, which I am sure it will.

Via wildcard right? We all know who is getting that AL East title ;)

With Showalter managing, I think they will be much improved. The starting pitching looks thin on paper, but Matusz could be ready for a break out year. I don't expect that they will be the doormats of the AL East this season. The Rays may be the doormats of 2011.

As it stands right now, I do think the sox win the AL East. They have the innings eaters 1-3 and 2 guys who can give innings behind them in Beckett and DiceK. The Yankees have 2 guys who have a record of eating innings, one second yr starter and a bunch of ??s. Even though the Yankees pen is the best in baseball, their rotation will need an upgrade to be a world series contender
