I'm surprised you're so optimistic about this. In the last 40 years' date=' how many times have the Yankees have made zero moves in an offseason?[/quote']

They've made moves. Martin, Feleciano, Vizcaino, Parraz.

They've made moves, just not blockbuster ones. And if Pettitte doesn't sign, Cashman has already said he's going in-house for the replacements.

Don't be fooled. If there's a report that comes out in the future about how all of these great Boston players get traded for scraps so that John Henry can funnel all of the money into Liverpool' date=' the one person that WON'T be surprised is a700. He'd be sitting on his rocking chair with his shotgun in hand saying "I told you so." ;)[/quote']:lol: I don't own a gun or a rocking chair, but I would be tossing back some vodka on the rocks and probably posting exactly that. Right now, it is the Liverpool fans that are pissed off. If the FO is running a scam on us, I'm still in the dark, but i'll be the first one who will see the signs.:lol: Everyone will call me crazy as usual.

I think Cashman wants to enter the season and make a move then' date=' players have been traded so cheap during the season. A lot of playoff teams are at the brink of payroll as well. Angels, Tigers and Yankees have some room to spend, but lets see where were at after Soriano, Beltre, etc sign. Yankees might be in a position to bend teams over a barrel at the trade deadline.[/quote']

My biggest concern is that he passes up on a solid trade for something else, though. He obviously passed on a pretty reasonable offer for Dan Haren so he could go get Cliff Lee. Surprise, surprise, the NYY money wasnt good for Lee and he didnt come here. Haren would have been had without giving up Montero, and that is almost unforgiveable. That being said, the 2012 FA pitchers are slimmer than this round. The only 2 difference makers out there are Buerhle and Carpenter, and Carp will be ancient and Buerhle might be retired

I'm going to go ahead and laugh hard at this post. You were the main proponent of "who cares, there's a 95% chance Lee signs with the Yanks anyways" during the season. Now that "5%" turns into "I told y'all it was a mistake when he didn't trade for Haren!!!11!!!".

Lol.

In retrospect, it was an error. It was an error I would have made too. Unfortunately, y228 was right. It left us with a hole that will be really hard to fill if Pettitte stays home

No it wasn't. You know as well as i do that Haren wasn't a good fit for the Yankees because of his fly-ball and home-run tendencies. They did their due diligence on Haren but there was no indication that Lee would turn down the Yankee dollars this off-season.

Food for thought:

Haren's career HR/9 is 1.1, and his career FB% is 36.4. He doesn't seem like a fit for NYS and Lee was the superior pitcher anyway.

The Yankees went for the correct pitcher with the correct approach but ran into an unlucky situation. It happens.

Guess you're right. Just wondering who the next pitching acquisition is going to be on the trade front, since the 2011 class is looking absolutely abysmal

I had heard one of the B's and Nunez was the DBacks offer and Cash passed on it

Wow...

i'm not sure if I posted this in here but if I'm cashman I use some of that money and call the Royals up and say hey we'll take Meche if you give us Soria. Offer a package of Joba, Romine and Phelps(who is underrated by most Yankees fans) I'd sub out Phelps for Nova if we HAVE to. Royals could use Joba with Jeffress at the backend of their bullpen or give joba a shot at starting. Romine could be useful as many people see Myers in the same boat at Montero and will have to move positions. Phelps/Nova gives them something they plug into their rotation.

Give Meche the 5th spot in the roto and see if moving from playing for the first pick to actually playing meaningful baseball will give him a shot in the arm. Also it's a one year deal and if he does well we could end up getting a supp pick for him.

You don't have to worry about that now.

Contrary to popular belief, the Yankees will be just fine without Lee. The reason the Sox closed the talent gap isn't necessarily pitching (at least starting pitching), but offense.

CC is CC.With Petitte back, this would be the same rotation that won you a WS in 2009 without an improving Hughes, who should be better next year. AJ is not this bad, so he's a great bet to bounce back, so even if Petitte regresses, those two should mitigate any concerns about the pitching at least until the ASB.

The Yanks will be in good shape and make the playoffs in '11 unless they become an injury train wreck like the '10 Sox. Business as usual.

The way I see it, I don't think Pettitte will be back, but under the assumption that he is back, I do believe he will regress. I actually think he'll regress fairly significantly and I don't think he will be able to finish the season.

Pettitte said (in an article that I read a few weeks ago) that he was unsure of his ability to return to proper baseball form after the groin injury, and if he doesn't know if he will be able to achieve baseball condition, I don't think he'll be able to grind out a full season. Even if he does grind out a full season, will he be worth over 10 - 12 wins?

Having said that, the Yankees really, really need Pettitte to come back. If he doesn't, their rotation becomes extremely righty-heavy, and that doesn't fair well against the lefty-heavy Sox line up, whether in the regular season or in the post season.

After seeing their core players getting older (i.e. A-Rod, Posada, Jeter, Pettitte if he comes back, Mo), you have to wonder how long they can dodge the inevitable injury ridden season.

They had their injury riddled season in 2008.

Wait. Each team only gets 1 injured season?? Well sh!t, I'm emptying my savings and putting it on the Sox to win it in 2011!! This is the kind of bet that puts your kids through college. Thanks for the no doubter!

You are saying that they have been dodging bullets by not having an injury riddled season. I am telling you they just had one. Doesnt mean they wont have another, but it isnt like they've been lucky for 2 decades now
