It's also worth noting that Yankees' pitchers and catchers continue to make poor decisions when it comes to pitch selection. Andy's bread and butter against righties is a FB in, or a cutter in. What he wants to avoid is letting them extend their hands, when he throws that straight fastball on the outer half. On 3-2 to Reed Johnson, you go with your bread and butter, like he did against Manny in the first inning. He doesn't, and just like against Dan Haren in his previous start, Johnson slaps it over first. They don't learn from their mistakes, and it continues not to surprise me.

Who's fault do you think that is? I mean, you make a great point, I'm just not sure who the problem is attributable to. It seems like the management doesn't know either.

Burnett is way too much of a streaky pitcher' date=' when he's good he's great, when he's bad he's horrible.[/quote']

Kind of like Mr. Bucket of rocks for a head, Josh Beckett.

Although... at least Burnett hasn't been on the DL yet this year. Burnett has that going for him, cause he's not doing much else right lately.

Very often I question the Yankees' pitch selection on this site. I think the pitcher's general approach against hitters comes from the game plan, so everyone is pretty much accountable, including the pitching coach, the pitcher, and the catcher. On one hand, the pitching coach is often responsible for a pitcher's overall approach (depending on the pitcher) and game planing, but at the same time, he's not out on the field.

Unfortunately I realize that many people read my posts on this topic and probably think to themselves, "He's just some fan, it's crazy that he thinks he knows more about pitch selection than a MLB team". I don't see it this way, and based on what I see on a daily basis from the Yankees, I tend to think they're pretty clueless when it comes to pitch selection.

To answer your question more directly, I really don't know exactly who the responsibility falls to, I just hope they figure it out sooner rather than later.

This is the first I've heard you talk about pitch selection, but I haven't been on the site THAT long, and I hardly ever go to the Yankee Gameday Thread. In any event, I think that you make a good point. The problem is, that it's hard to diagnose the exact problem and how to directly address it. You'd think that with many paid coaches on the roster that they would notice some discrepancies between pitcher behaviour and catcher calls, as well as any other subtle factors that might hinder team success.

As much as I complain about Girardi, I certainly don't miss Torre's in game decisions. Asking Broxton to get four outs yesterday in a five run game, and bringing in Garrett Anderson for defense in place of Manny are just absolutely brutal moves.

Forgot to mention this last night, but I'm really pleased with David Robertson's progress. It's time for him to retake his old role in the bullpen.

Girardi makes me want to go crazy sometimes. Hughes was skipped and was obviously not sharp. Instead of being glad about him getting lucky to get through 5 with 4ER, he throws him back out there for a 6th where the M's essentially put it away
