that's interesting although like the article says, they could bring him back for a lower salary. No way he's gonna make $6 mil anywhere in 2010

i did see that but as prior said some people wanted them to just pick up his option

I think they could bring him back at about 3M. If he won't take it I guess they could look at Tejada or OC on a one year deal.

why pick up an option that would be higher than what he'll make anywhere next season?

i didn't say that but others had. he couldn't make the 6 he would get. he could make 2 to 4 at the most. IMO.

How much is roster security worth?

what if we nix the option and then someone else scoops up Gonzo?

not that much for a player like him. higher caliber SS in the FA pool.

Shortstops

Orlando Cabrera MIN (A) Maybe, don't care for the A status though.

Juan Castro LAD pass

Alex Cora NYM pass

Bobby Crosby OAK pass

Adam Everett DET pass

Alex Gonzalez * BOS 1 yr deal

Khalil Greene STL Meh minor league deal

Ramon Martinez LAD pass

John McDonald TOR last resort, he can field pretty good

Marco Scutaro TOR (A) pass, he's old, and outplayed his britches this season

Miguel Tejada HOU I could get on board for a one year deal

Jack Wilson * SEA He's pretty far down on the list

C'mon, would anyone really say "holy s***, someone scooped up Alex Gonzalez. What do we do now?!"

I'd say "holy s***, someone scooped up Alex Gonzales. Sign someone else now!"

My preference would be Gonzales though.

i think that i would want him because he is needed because i wouldn't want another SS this year we need to stick with one but it wouldn't be that horrid to lose him. I would definitely take a chance on Tejada and Greene is a good SS.

No, but I would say "Well, Theo better be confident in Lowrie then."

I'm generally okay with it too. Lowrie should get a shot to take the job and can act as a good substitution in at least 3 positions and on both sides of the plate. I still have hopes for him to be an above average SS.

he can be above average if he can stay healthy he can be a good hitter and an average fielder if not better.

I must be pedantic. And I must have googled the word before... I was able to insist this world is a better place when we are pedantic.

Pretty sad.. Gonzalez has pitiful numbers offensively but how can anyone want to shake that D?

Scutaro is NOT worth 2 picks and nobody else on this list wouldn't make me go "WOOHOO!" were he to be picked up..

SS looks like it's gonna be a problem for a while

Unless Lowrie can step up, yeah. Or we pull off an advantageous trade.

The GM Meetings start today. Time for Theo and Company to get to work.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/

The GM meetings aren't typically known for actual deals taking place(not all the time I know). But a lot of ground work is usually laid out, and see some of the deals finished up at the next set of meetings in December.

This year seems different though. There have been 4 semi major trades already. So I think there could actually be some moves that go down this time around. I think the teams selling will want to move players contracts sooner rather then later IMO. But we will see.
