I believe health is being called into question as opposed to ability.

Wake is no longer a full season pitcher, and keeping a starting slot open for him inhibits development of young pitching--especially since the Sox don't seem to start off their young pitchers in the bullpen.

My guess is they will cut bait on Tek, and take a look at Wake in ST if he doesn't want to retire. The bigger question is Ortiz. I don't think they want another .225 year at DH.

I would like to see Wakefield back and as the long reliever. First of all, I am only seeing this scenario unfold because we'd get someone like John Lackey in the offseason, which would push Wakefield out of the rotation. If you look at our relievers now, few can give you more than an inning. We'd most likely be (happily) losing Wagner to FA, which would open up a spot in the bullpen AND net us 2 draft picks (which we'd lose 1 if we got Lackey)

And, seeing how starter depth was necessary this year, I'd say that it's important to keep Wakefield and to keep him active (unlike Byrd who sat at his house for a few months) so it'd be easier to slide him into a rotation spot if (when) someone went down. Plus Wake's $4 million isn't expensive and it beats searching the scrap heap for a potential 5th/6th/7th/8th starter.

Plus I like Wakefield and he's close to a few milestones I'd like to see him achieve. I'll miss him though.

For the millionth time, stop the BA argument, dude.

Wishful thinking on your part Jacko. If Pedro Martinez could learn to share his toys when Schill came along I'm pretty sure that Lackey and Beckett can coexist. Besides, the Sox let Beckett walk only if his demands are incredibly unreasonable because we know who'd sign him.

OK let's simply amend the argument to taste.

I don't think they want another .757 OPS season at DH.

That said, Ortiz has been improving slowly but steadily as the year goes on, so I have little trouble letting the big man play out the string. Heck, for all I know he has a breakout year and forces us to resign him.

His demands are going to be on the CC Sabathia order. Young, powerful, ace, recently has been durable and even more so than CC, a ton of playoff success. Someone is gonna pay him a ton of money

Thank you.

Carry on.

I very much doubt it. Beckett is great when he's on, but everyone knows that the book on Beckett is that he's inconsistent and gets his mechanics out of order pretty easily. As he gets older that is unlikely to improve and teams know it.

AJ Burnett money is more likely. Burnett himself is overpaid, but that same contract would work out for Beckett.

We already had this argument.

Stop it.

That's shocking. He must have really ticked off the wrong person.

As much as he and I were at each other's throats, I'm a little disappointed he's gone.

Yeah, what the hell... He was fun to debate with.

If you can get into anything goes, i geuss why he got banned. Anything goes is private for me; therefore, i can not read anything. lol

Back to topic, I think the plan for Wake is to have surgery in the off season. I don't think he has any plans to retire, especially when he's so close to the franchise win record.
