This is my prediction. I will eat crow if they do not. However, if they do, you shall all pay homage.

I figure 86 wins for the Red Sox.

If it's any consolation to everyone here, Steve Phillips also picked the Sox to finish 3rd. I, for one, think Gom and Phillips display the same level of smarts.

The Sox very well could finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. All of the top 3 teams are solid, depending on injuries and pitching. I think that without huge injuries (say, Ortiz, Manny, Schilling, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Papelbon, etc.,) this team should win 90-95 games--leaning toward 95. If there is any slippage from any of the three then there wil be another team to take over. Predictions at this point only go that far.

Ya Phillips also picked the Yanks to win the division, so if he picked them 1 and us 3 it should be about the opposite...

The Red Sox will win the division if our big three can step it up. If Daisuke has a Johan type impact, Beckett has 15 or 16 wins with an ERA around 4, and Schilling can stay consistent and produce around the same level as he did last season, the rotation will be the best in the league. The Sox also have a solid bullpen for the first time in years. With Donnelly and Okajima in the late innings and Papelbon closing it out, it'll become much less of a risk when we have a one or two run lead going into the late innings. Also, the lineup is looking great this season as we don't have to depend on certain players like Coco or Varitek to produce. As long as Lugo and Youk get on base, and Papi, Manny, and Drew can drive in the runs, our lineup will once again be a machine.

Second place goes to the Toronto Blue Jays, the same team that will win the A.L wild card. Halladay, Burnett, and Chacin will be a powerful top of the rotation trio and B.J Ryan is just about as lights out as they come. The lineup will come together and be a run producing machine as they have Troy Glaus, Alex Rios, Lyle Overbay, and Vernon Wells returning along with the addition of slugger Frank Thomas who should continue to hit countless homers in the DH spot.

The Yankees on the other hand are looking as vulnerable as ever. The lineup is great but also isn't getting any younger. A-Rod will have an MVP year and Jeter will continue to do what he does, but after that, nothing is certain. Even though I'm a Red Sox fan, I'm far from biased as I picked the Yankees to win the division last season. Even if the Yankees acquire Roger Clemens midway through the season (which I'm expecting), he won't make as big of an impact as NY fans will hope for. He'll be turning 45 in August and he's going to find much tougher lineups in the AL than he saw in past seasons. His ERA will linger around 4 and his injury risk will be huge. Their rotation as it stands is terrible. Mussina will have a solid year and Igawa might have some success but Pettite, Pavano, and their #5 starter just won't cut it.

It's going to be a three way race to the finish for the AL East but the power is shifting and the Yankees will find themselves in 3rd place looking up to the Blue Jays, and World Champion Red Sox.

That's a little much. I'd love it' date=' but that's a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle much. Johan is the best pitcher in the game by a long shot...[/quote']

Daisuke has the same potential. It might take him a month or two to adjust but hopefully he can have the same sucess with his pitch selection that Johan does come October.

I believe my local newspaper has the Sox going 93-71 and then losing to the Angels in the ALCS... Which is bogus.

Yeah as soon as I read that I had a feeling someone didn't put effort into the coloumn. Then I saw it was written by some young dude acting like he's knows sports who even said the Twins were gonna make division and possibly the LCS...

Gom this is a retarded prediction. The Sox got killed by the worst injury bug thats happened on American soil since pearl harbor and then went out and dropped 200 million on free agents upgrading the rotation, the bullpen, and RF and SS.

So... 86 wins? I'm gonna figure out how to catch a crow, you're eatin' that bird live. That will be worth my time.

If everything goes well this year, or even decent we will take the AL East. This is our best chance since 04 and though we don't have the 1-2 of Martinez and Schilling (back then) we have a 4 man deep rotation of solid pitchers who can pick up a win against anyone. That, plus the re-vamped lineup, and Papelbon as our closer, looks very good on paper. Meanwhile, the Yanks have the same question marks we have rotation-wise, but if both teams stay healthy, we definitely have the edge in talent. But because of the Yanks lineup, they still may take the AL east crown and at the least take 2nd and the WC.

The main goal for this team right now is to get into the playoffs, where it turns to our strength of having 4 solid starting pitchers, which can beat anyone in the AL if theyre on except for maybe the ChiSox.

The bullpen is weak except for close. Gom will look like a genius if the 40 year olds go down with injuries.

I cant disagree with 700...

What happens when grossly overpaid catcher goes down?

What happens when AAAA middle relief sucks eggs..?

What happens when two thirds of the outfield arent hitting their weight?

As a true sox fan I dont give a s*** if they spent 160M.. im pretty sure the 04' 112M dollar team is / was better..

But thats why they play the games.. lets get ready to Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmbllllllllleeeeeeeeee

And if Ortiz, Manny, Drew, Coco, Wily Mo Pena, Mike Lowell, Kevin Youkilis, Jason varitek, and Papelbon all miss considerable time again... then yea

If Manny & Drew both stay healthy, I dont see any cause for concern in that dept

Coco will probably have a .280 season with like 10-15 HRs/60+ RBIs. If Drew is healthy and hit like the way he should (what we saw in ST as well) he could have something like a .290/18 HR/85+ RBI campagin. Manny before he bailed out on the sinking 06 team still had 35 HRs, 102 RBIs. Look for him to come back to the 40 HRs. Then theres Wily Mo off of the bench. In just 261 ABs and with a wrist injury he still managed to hit above .300 and have an 11 HR/43 RBI season. I wouldnt be surprise if he puts up 15 to 20 jacks this year
