who said $20 mil for 1/2 a season?

i like 350,000 a start, 150,000 for every quality start, double those numbers in the playoffs, and only require his presence on game day. if they go to maximum game in every series and win the WS in 7, he could easily blow past 20 million. If he falls apart and its over he might only cost 2-3 million. His vanity should induce him to sign such a contract. If he wins a ring with the sox, and he does well or very well who then says he's not the best ever, some guy in a cave that thinks 511 wins (over 100 from 50' from batter) playing soft toss is in any way better?

I've been watvhing him from day one, and you are absolutely right. The only time he came up big was game 7 of the 2001 WS. He pitched very well under the pressure. I did n't expect that he would... but we know how that turned out for his team.

1999 playoffs. 2000 ALCS. 2001, as you said. 2004. 2005. Among other times. In factm in another Clemens related thread I made a whole list of times that he pitched very good.

i would rather spend our money on some bullpen help, and Doug Mirabelli. It looks like our rotation is pretty good, especially if we could somehow get Papelbon back into it. We really need someone in the bullpen, since it is looking pretty shaky right now.

Anyone that good can pitch on my team any day... now I just need a team. In the meantime though, I'd love to see him pitch for the sox because he's an ace. Add one more ace to this staff and I think that gives us three. Ok.

in my opinion he should retire on a high note ,if he pitches again this year he will not even be close to what he did last year especially if he goes to the american league where's there no pitcher to get an easy out from

he needs to retire. i agree with the monster is my mom. this guy is gonna sit on his ass and wait to see who is better before making a decision. clemens is a bitch. pitch or retire. im sick of this guy. i cant believe he is gonna sit out half the regular season because thats the only time he pitches worth a s***. very average playoff pitcher. i would like to see the sox spend money elsewhere.

Irregardless of what you think of Clemens, he still is a damn good pitcher. He put up a 1.98 ERA last year, who else besides Pedro Martinez has done that in the last 10 years? Adding a pitcher like that to your rotation is HUGE, if the Red Sox add him, they have three aces to go toward October. No other teams rotation would even come close to matching that.

I think it's a HUGE risk paying a 40+ year old guy 20+ million dollars for half of a season. It's not worth it, I don't care who you are.
I don't think it is that big of a risk. It's not a long term commitment. It would be for half of a season. It wouild be the blink of an eye, but you may not want to blink because you could miss a hell of a show. It will either be the ultimate high or merely Roger's final tour of Fenway. Either way the fans win.

i don't want to hear anyone who says sign clemens now to EVER bitch about the yankees buying a championship again... because if in fact we did do this and we did win we would be the first team to literally "buy" a championship in the past decade.

We won't bitch about that ever again. But we would not buying someone else's player to help us win (a la the Yankees with Damon as the latest example). Currently, Clemens is out of a job, and if the Sox brought him back, they would just be reclaiming their own property.

If Clemens would help us get into the World Series I'd give him anything he wants, and if the rumor is true that the Red Sox are his first choice I'd tell Mr. Epstein not to screw this one up. I want to win.

Well, most are hypocritical to the fact that we basically ARE most like the Yankees compared to any other team, I mean the Yankees just have the prestige to get players while we don't. Basically any team above 100 mill is kind of a Yankee team, just the Yankees go above and beyond that, and are better at playing that part.

Damon was out of a job as well. We didnt steal him. He was not employed by any particular franchise. Same as Clemens.

Thanks for being honest with yourself. Maybe it will rub off on some of your fellow Sox fans here who are of the belief that the Boston Red Sox are a small market team, such as the Royals, or Devil Rays, or Marlins or something. I applaud you.

It's a little different. The season has started, if you haven't noticed, and the Rocket is not playing for anyone or on anyone's payroll. Damon never missed a check. He was never out of work.

Oh please, so the fact that ROger has decided to sit out the first few months makes it ok for you guys to go and get him. Now dont get me wrong, I think it's ok, why wouldnt it be. But I mean, I dont see how to you guys, thats ok, but signing a guy in the offseason isnt. You make ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.

Wah Wah Wah, I hate the Yankees. Wah Wah Wah.

Lenny Dinardo or Roger Clemens who would you rather have?

Bronson Arroyo, thanks for asking. :D

I would sell my soul to the devil to win.

Actually even if we signed Clemens for 20 million our payroll would still be about 50 million less than the Yanks'.

And A7H, what are you talking about? Any team has the right to sign any player in the offseason.

Actually, I did hear about a year ago that Theo's plan was to cut the team payroll down to about 100 Mil in the near future. Do the Yankees plan on cutting any payroll?

Posted

and it'll be less once the contracts giambi, mussina and johnson expire.

in 5 years the yankees payroll will be equal or less than ours, i guarantee it.

Hey 26, no, we are a very large market team but, face it, we cannot compete with the Yankees dollar for dollar. No team can. We can spend but we must spend very wisely, which, of course, does not mean getting stiffs like Harris and Gonzales to pollute our lineup. Look at our bullpen. Better than last year, yes, but still not the type that wins championships. Why? Because we are somewhat limited in our finances to pick up contracts as your team can. As long as Steinbrenner can write checks and give some of those loser teams money he will be able to stay in business.

Gonzalez is no stiff, pull your head out of the sand. Defense was the priority at SS, I bet you were one of the Anything we have for Tejada people.
