Jsing, I think we are wasting our time in the Clemens hunt. I hark back to the old saying that "you can't go home again." Roger was once a Red Sox stalwart; that was years ago and he has put it behind him and moved on. So have we. Personally, I think it would be a great capping to his career to return to Fenway and lead the Red Sox to the World Series triumph he almost led us to in '86. That's movie stuff, though. Of course, I wouldn't mind it at all if he suddenly decided to come "home" that you would remind me of how way off the charts I was on this thing. It wouldn't bother me a bit.

If it were just about the end of his career and this year i think he would come to the sox. However that's not the case and after this year is over he will still be active with the astros in a "non-player" type way. For that reason i find it hard to believe that he will leave them for anyone! I hope i am wrong though!

Yaz, I do get carried away sometimes, don't I? Well, wanna know the truth? I keep looking at the Yankees' World Series titles and how many they won in a row, and it pisses me off no end. I say to myself, now it is our turn to win a bunch and I know that is out of the question. Those dynasties are very rare, and rarer nowadays. Still, I think as a selfish Red Sox fan that we are entitled to our share of them and want to see more than just the 2004 Flag flying over Fenway. Yes, call be greedy.

Let's see, it took 244 posts to come to this earth shaking reality that Roger will not come here. Let's see, he's back home, his family lives there, his son is in the organization, he has a personal contract to work for the organization after he "retires", he just opened a restaurant, he was basically called an overpriced, fat, out of shape, pitcher in the "twilight: of his career ( which he was ), and has Never carried a team in the play-offs. He's basically an over priced whore that's no longer attractive.

He said that because you quadruple posted.

As for Clemens, he may be the most viable option at the big league level for the Red Sox in terms of pitching help. He'll cost the Red Sox money, sure, but he is definitely a better option than Matt Clement right now. Plus, you don't know what David Wells is going to give you.

We are in need of pitching help, and I for one would welcome a Clemens return.

At this point I'm getting tired of the Hendricks group pimping Roger with all of these dog and pony shows that really are just a means of driving up his price.

Raajaa is just using the Sox to squeeze more money out of the team that wouldn't offer him arbitration. This isn't about baseball, it's about banking.

Agreed. This suggests that there is some element where he is looking for the biggest payday so there is still a good chance that he’ll go wherever (Houston, NY, Boston) he’s offered the most money.

So with that in mind I wouldn’t mind if the Sox did overpay for his services. And a deal like this wouldn’t involve parting with any prospects. I hope Theo can land him regardless of the $$$. Get it done!

Capeman, ok, we are finally on the same page with Roger----he is not coming here. I have no doubt he is looking for the big buck, but your point about him already being "home" seems right on the mark. Holding out some hope even in the face of reality is only done by me because we need another good starting pitcher who can go out there and win us some games on a consistent basis. DiNardo can't beat anybody, Wakefield is pitching very mediocre this year at best, and Clement in just plain inconsisten and, if you want my opinion, gutless. Now since I respect your baseball knowledge, you tell me what we do if Roger doesn't come here. You don't actually believe we can win with the rotation we have now, do you? I have some ideas but I'd like to hear yours first if you wouldn't mind.

Kilo, my goof. I posted and was told I couldn't post for another minute, then posted again, and was told the same thing. Then they go ahead and post them all and make me look like a jackass. Sorry about that. Capeman is right, though. I think it is time to put this Roger crap to bed once and for all and move on. We need another good starter and we can't fool ourselves on that. What to do now?

i still have a good feeling he wants to come back to Boston.

A source close to the Roger Clemens talks indicated yesterday all four teams -- the Rangers, Astros, Yankees, and Red Sox -- are keeping their ear to the ground and intensifying their activity in pursuit of the big righthander. The source said he believes the decision will be between Boston and Houston, with the Astros holding a slight advantage. Asked about the Yankees, the source said, "Obviously, you never count them out of anything. They could swoop in at the last minute." -- Boston Globe, 5/26

i like how it says "slight edge", all along its been that the Astros have had a huge edge in getting him

We don't need some mercenary, traitor pitching for our team. We can win it without him anyways. I don't like that he is sitting back and seeing which teams are going to have a chance, and then cause a bidding war between them. f*** him.

When that traitor wants to make things right again and happens to be arguably the greatest pitcher of all time, a fairy tale ending would suit me just fine. By the way, ESPN reports that Houston and Boston are the favorites for his return.

I think Capeman is right on this thread. We have worn it down to the nub and, frankly, I'll believe Clemens is coming to Boston when I see the signed contract in the papers. I don't know of any topic we've run into the ground like this one. Time to call a time out on this and move on to things we know something about. Maybe in a week or two we can revive this but, quite frankly, I've had all the Clemens talk I can handle for awhile.

I find it funny that the globe is reporting that it is between the sox and the astros. What do they know? Seriously, there is no way the yankees get outbid for Roger if he decides he wants to come north. If he wants to stay home, then we cannot beat that...

I don't think theres going to be much of a difference between any of the 3 options (I dont consider Texas a real option) in terms of cash. Its going to be where he wants to go I think.

Of the three places, Boston has something the other two places cannot offer. If he finishes his career in Boston and goes out on a high note with a Championship, there will be an overwhelming rise in sentimentality in Red Sox Nation. That will equate to tremendous economic opportunities in New England throughout his retirement. His name does not carry the same cache as it does in New England. That is just a fact. Once he retires, the only business asset he will have will be his good name. Roger is no dummy.

The yanks won't get outbid, however I think the money for all teams will be close---it just matters what he wants to do. He's going to get his money, now does he want to piss off the astros!

If its really between the Sox and Astros, i hope he makes his decision a little later than expected. The Astros are not a good team and after getting off to a hot start, they are starting to fade, 6 games out of the NL Central and in 5th place. They're on a 4 game losing streak and have lost 7 of they're last 10. Why would he want his last season spent on a team who won't win anything. He has nothing left to do, but possibly win another championship, which won't happen in Houston. With Wells going down, that opens up a spot for Clemens. It only makes sense to me, that if he makes a decision in June, with Houston under .500, he would have to choose the Sox. Im worried about the Yankees coming in at the last minute, and stealing him.

Who knows, clemens could relish the opportunity to pick up the fatman's spot in the rotation (if the fatman is truly done). i think they were good friends during the time in the toilet--if i am wrong though someone please correct me!

steve phillips is really picking the sox to get him at this point. he thinks houston is out and they are going to be losing a lot of games, and he thinks the sox will be more flexible with family, and that may even be dying down with roger because hes had all this time out of the game (a few months is a lot for him).

I truly would jump up and down if he came back.

if wells is fine, we'd have to figure out a way to fit Clemens into the rotation. It would obviously be in Clements spot, but what would we do with Clement? We'd probably have find someone who would take him in a trade.

Me as well. He would make an EXCELLENT addition.

Why not keep Clement and get rid of Wells?

Steve Phillips is an imbecile. He predicted that Slammin Sammy would hit 50+ homers for the Orioles last year. Ever since I heard him make that prediction, I never take him seriously.

oh and I dont like steve phillips either, but inside connections to trades are much more valid than his predicitons on players output.

Clement is never going to be as good as he was with the Cubs again. EVer since he took the liner off of the head, he has been terrible. Wells is old, but he is more useful than Clement
