I believe he was DFA'd by the D-Backs, which resulted in his release from the team. The Yanks signed him to a minor league contract and recently purchased it.

Word. I don't follow the Diamondbacks enough to know every roster move they make, so this one kinda surprised me. He actually was a solid reliever for them last year...even was the closer. So it's kinda shocking.

HA! Maybe they can DFA Valverde too...and we can pick him up. B)

That's funny stuff.

Anyhow, I would just like to congratulate the Yankees on your sweep. There is no other real explanation, you guys just outplayed us, and had more desire to win. I know the season is not over for the Red Sox, there is still a glimmer of hope, but you guys really socked it to us.

they outplayed and outmanaged us

Another good sign is that you guys may not increase your lead over us tonight!

But of course, that's just wishful thinking.

WTF are the Angels doing?! Bring in the Ebola Monkey damn it.

yeah, what's with the 5 inning limit? I understand not wanting to overwork him at a young age, but if you never allow him to go deep he'll never be able to in the future. I think under these no-hit circumstances, at least, they should have let him go deeper.

In other news, when Mussina went on the DL the Yanks called Bruney up. Another move I dont understand. As I believed it, a player had to spend 10 days in the minors after being sent down. Bruney was sent down over the weekend and is back on the roster already. This, along with being able to option players such as Aaron Guiel, who have more than 3 years service time, just has be absolutely confused regarding a transaction/roster move system that I thought I had a pretty good understanding of. Please, if anyone can explain any of this to me I would greatly appreciate it.

Bruney can come back up if a player gets injured. As for Hughes there is no reason for him at this point in the year to go anymore than 5 innings. He has had a tremendous year and this is the time of the year the yankees are watching his innings and getting him in the process of shutting him down for the year.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. The only sense I can make of it is to compare it to swimming. When you have a big meet coming up, like leagues, counties, or nationals, you 'taper' for about two months before the big meet so you are able to be rested but refreshed and able to push your limit. That only really makes sense though if the Yanks expect him to not only be called up, but seriously contribute in September. I guess they are just hell bent on saving his arm and not overworking him because they think that he will be pitching for a very long time to come.

Carl Pavano, who could return to the Yankees' rotation on Thursday, has a sore oblique which might postpone his return.

Pavano pitched well for Triple-A Columbus on Friday and appeared to be ready to rejoin the Yankees. If the oblique injury is serious the Yankees will likely shut him down and it will be the end to Pavano's season.

I knew it was too good to be true.

rotoworld

According to the New York Times, "there is a widespread perception in the Yankees’ clubhouse that Carl Pavano simply does not want to pitch."

Pavano has suffered yet another setback in his recovery, making his status for a start this week uncertain. The newspaper reports that Pavano "seems to have no defenders among the players, who stopped counting on him long ago."

have they tried vagisil with pavano yet??

as we prepare for fall and the icy world of the off season

i think its the only thing that can get warriors like matt clement and pavano on the field due to that painfull itch

Aside from the fact that the Pavano issues really hurts the Yankees in the long term because of all the money they invested in him, I think this hurts them pretty bad in the short term. Lets assume, I know all the Red Sox fans here will say there is no need to assume, that the Yankees make the playoffs. Lets also assume that Moose is healthy. Assuming they have homefield advantage and that they can setup there playoff rotation as the season winds down here's how I see it playing out:

-Moose will start game one simply because he has probably been our best pitcher this year and is probably the guy you would want to start two games in the series.

-Wang would pitch game two because he pitches astonishingly better at home than he does on the road.

-RJ would pitch game three because Torre has said over and over again that he believes that game three is the most important game of any series, and he would want the veteran Randy on the mound. On top of that, besides maybe Moose, I think that Torre trusts Randy on the road more than anyone.

-Game four is the problem. Wright and Lidle are the two guys left. Although they have both had their moments, they really are two inconsistent. I don't think Torre could live with their high pitch counts and poor ball to strike ratios in the playoffs. Because of this, if Pavano came back and showed moderate consistency, he would be thrown right into the fire as the Yanks fourth playoff starter. But, due to recent, and not unexpected developement, this idea is going down the drain very quickly. As a Yankee fan, I would rather Wright and Lidle not see time as starters in the playoffs.
