    My understanding was that AZ wanted Tolle+ That would've been a disaster. We didn't miss on Bregman as much as the Cubs missed on Bregman. I'm not writing him off, but I'm guessing that the Cubs wouldn't be averse to moving his contract.

    I agree. Shaw should be good, but I wouldn't count on him being great. And that's fine with me.

    I would do it. I said this last year, during his hot streak, that his trade value might have exceeded his real value. Early could still be a good pitcher, but his ceiling is like a #3. I'd make the trade and mix and match pitchers until Crochet and Bello get back.

    You know what's funny? We probably did as well as almost anyone picking up these three guys.

    Duran is out of the question. But he if we acquire Murphy, which I highly endorse, then we have four catchers, if you include Gaspar. We should be open to including one of them.

    We're not swapping out Duran for Narvaez. Duran has been one of the best players in BB since the start of May.

    I read until about the ASG. You'd be gambling big-time on health, but his bWAR/162 is 4.2 over the past five years, with almost no bad years. 'IF' healthy, he is a lot better than what we currently have, and $15M * 2, plus a team option, is a pretty affordable contract.

    I agree. Being open to acquiring a bad contract doesn't necessarily mean being stupid and taking everything. SF has a backloaded contract with Adames. I doubt that they expect to get his two most productive years at $13M each, and have someone else pick up the 5 declining years at $31M a piece. They can try, but they won't succeed. I mean, there could easily be someone looking to pick up a #26 LH hitter than can play a little LF. But that doesn't mean they will be picking up almost any of salary.

    But we need to be at least guided by the numbers. Personally, I think he'll recover closer to expectations. He's not even 30. But the starting point for any discussion should be his actual numbers, and then arguing them back to what he might do if he ever returned. If Hamilton had an .800 OPS this year, I wouldn't argue that he would only have a .642 if he returned to Fenway.

    My recollection is that he had a wrist injury that never quite recovered. Those are a death knell to sluggers.

    No reason not to. For some reason (not necessarily you) RS fans think that signing players until they are 35-36-37 is good business. But acquiring a player whose contract expires prior to that age is not.

    That's the whole thing. Without knowing how much SF is willing to pay down, it's impossible to assess the chances of a trade. His 8 HRs in his past 24 games suggest that he should continue to hit at his historical rate. Paying the dude to age 35 is an issue, but that's what SF has to deal with.

    Looking? No. But they know, for certain, they are eating salary. And they know that everyone else knows this.

    According to BR, his career OPS is .709 and career .714 with RISP. But it does seem like he always got more RBIs from the 9-slot than seemed possible.

    100% spot on. You have maybe 6-7 teams that blow past the cap and probably don't want to be restrained. You have maybe 12 teams so far away from the cap that they don't know what the number is. Out of the remaining 10-11 teams, some are getting supported by the penalties from the big guys. In addition, one could make the argument that competitiveness is not necessarily good for the financials. When I looked at the WS ratings two years ago, we might be doing as well in Japan as we do. IMHO, it is a boogeyman on both sides. The owners would rather go bankrupt then not get a cap, but will gladly settle for 1% more of the revenue. The union bosses will take 1% less so they can go back to the players and brag about not not having a cap like the (much richer) NFL players.

    Not exactly a gym rat. I always thought that attributed to Vazquez' offensive decline. He just lost the rotational athletic skills.

    I have. But I don't have anyone suggested that Manny should be with the RS.

    A couple of days ago, I watched Monsasterio swing at a 3-2 in the 8th with a guy on base and -0- outs. The pitch bounced at least 1-2 inches before the plate. Not remotely close. Do we need practice recognizing balls and strikes?
