  1. When I went to HS, my family had already moved to the north Bronx, but I still went to HS in the South Bronx. It was fairly evenly split back then when it was 1/3 black, white, and Latino. When I returned for my 50th reunion, it was all black and Latino. The kids were so much more mature than when I went there. The 50th guys were introduced last at the graduation, and these kids were coming out of their seats to shake hands and high-five us. It was one of the most moving things I've ever been involved with.
  2. My daughter played AAU. Probably about 1/3 white, black and Latino. I'd bet that almost all of them are successful. Tough, but nice. Very focused. When my daughter showed up for a scholarship exam for one of the Manhattan schools, half the team was there taking the exam. Very interesting dynamics.
  3. Can the moderator please let Randy know his account has been hacked? His previous 127 posts were some version of JH being cheap. The new Randy doesn't seem to care.
  4. 0.2 fWAR, depending on how you treat Scherzer.
  5. I predicted Alonso going to the RS in the top-50 contest. But I think that the teams that sign guys earlier, are paying a premium to close the deal. IMO, if the Os only offered $110M/4, then Alonso has no motivation to sign. It should work the opposite as time drags on. Teams that are interested in Bregman won't wait until March to make up his mind.
  6. I agree. I make up my own mind, but adding up WAR v salaries is how I come to a conclusion. BTV does the same thing. But like any calculation, put it aside for a day, and see if it still makes sense in the morning.
  7. When you grow up in the Bronx, you learn life's lessons. You grow up in a schoolyard where you learn to get along with all sorts of people. No one cares about your opinion. Or your feelings. If you're not on the court, it's because you lost, and the only alternative is to get better. Bumping into people is not cause for a grievance. Lots of stuff which will make you better.
  8. Absolutely. I feel strongly that, if we sign Bregman at the price/deferrals I mentioned, that Bregman will out-perform Alonso on a dollar-for-dollar basis. FG projects Bregman as 1 fWAR better in 2026. I'm not sure how the aging curves will project that advantage over 5 years, but I am pretty comfortable wagering that Bregman's WAR/$$$ will exceed Alonso's.
  9. I believe in two things. 1-Everyone should spend a year in the Bronx. 2-Everyone should be forced to identify with a Star Trek race before they identify with a political party.
  10. The number I calculated above, $25.34, is only ~ $1M more than the $24.23M that Cots says we have available before the 2nd line. On a contract with a $160M gross, that should be easy to find. The the Frederation can revert back to 'why is Henry too cheap to sign a #2?'.
  11. This relates back to one of my earlier comments. Some fans think the JH is cheap because he won't sign their favorite player. And their favorite player is usually the shiniest object, not the best value or the best fit.
  12. And imho, we shouldn't have. DH is by no means an issue. Even if Yoshi disappeared, Duran would step in. Improving DH ranks a distant 3rd to adding either a 2B or 3B, plus adding a #2 SP.
  13. Cots is the go-to site for payroll. I find the layout so intuitive that, even if one were to question the difference between different sites, it's easy to rectify.
  14. It's all about marginal improvement. If we think our #7 will provide results similar to Bello, you make the move. Perhaps look at the 2027 rotation. Crochet Tolle Early Oviedo Witherspoon, Crawford, Harrison, 6-7-8 Bennett, Uberstine, Sandlin, etc. I think that's good, but less than elite. But is replacing Oviedo, for example, with Bello, a game-changer? Probably not. And since I think we still need a #2 in '26, '27, etc., combining Duran + Bello might be beneficial for our long term interests. And you linked the wrong Watson.
  15. One-trick ponies. If Henry spends $300M, they will still call him cheap.
  16. How much deferred? Based on last year's "$40M" discount, then the $160M/5 will look more like $25.34M per. That would be okay.
  17. Yes, it would be a good off-season. But if we don't move an outfielder, it will feel like an incomplete off-season. And that doesn't take into consideration whether or not I'll like the addition of one of those three. That part depends on price.
  18. No on every account. Diaz is a slightly better hitter, and a righty. But he is also 34. Jax was great, but he was sketchy last year. I seriously doubt Contreras plays any catcher, let alone back-up catcher. And three years of Duran for two years of Diaz? No. Look for a 2B/3B, or a #2 SP, or a really good prospect.
  19. I don't give much credence to GM talk. If this was the end of the off-season, then you need final plans. But this early, he has plenty of time.
  20. I'm not convinced the Cubs are in it. They have 4 infielders. 1st and SS are almost definitely not changing. They have Hoerner for one year, but even if they wanted to move on, neither Bregman nor Shaw are ideal candidates. They could sign Bregman and trade Shaw, but I think they'd lose serious value. I think Breslow sticks with 4 years/$100M, even if it's dressed up to look better than that.
  21. There is no telling what Breslow is looking for. I'm pretty sure he is looking way past 2026. And he is likely looking at overall value. I don't see any practical one-year players that would fit, but Breslow is probably looking at both pitchers and hitters, both veterans and prospects.
  22. It's an odd risk. Imai will either prove to be a real SP, and opt out, or he'll look like a very expensive RP.
  23. I wouldn't have been happy even back then. Like I said, I'd have topped Story's deal slightly, but that was in the range of $156M/6, and even that would've been problematic.
