Great. Of course we were talking about the little cheat cards. Not sure if this has sunk into your brain cell yet, but I don’t care that the shift is gone. I care that MLB is making rules to ban strategies and not doing the stuff they need to do to speed up the game. For example, we get a 3 batter minimum rule so managers don’t change too many pitchers in an inning and slow the game down. Why don’t we get a pitch clock? Did you know there are rules in the MLB rulebook for how long a pitcher can hold the ball? Why in all these attempts to speed up the game do they ignore the clock? It seems like they’re going to limit pitchers to 3 throws to first to hold a runner before they put in a pitch clock. No idea why MLB is so deadset against this…

Their good spurts typically coincided with good health. They were playing well in May and June because they were a better team. To call it a lucky schedule because the team played nearly .700 baseball is just ignorant of how good and how bad baseball teams are. I mean, for all this “back to reality” ******** you keep pushing, did you even realize the Sox are over .500 since their 10-19 start? But - let me guess - the Sox could finish 81-81 and in last place, you’ll (emphatically) call them a last place team and never once refer to them as a .500 team..

How does the umpire change that confrontation, besides serving as a distraction? I’m not convinced that having the home plate umpire make the determination for himself or receive a verbal cue about whether or not a pitch is in the strike zone creates this radical difference. Bear in mind 1. The home plate umpire will still be on the field making ball and strike calls. Also calling plays at the plate. 2. Calling balls and strikes is insanely difficult and also very important to the game. 3. It could eliminate stupid arguments. Sure players will try but the ump will just shrug his shoulders and point to his earpiece. End of argument.

The Sox are 4-2 against the struggling Astros, who are a paltry 40 games over .500. Apparently they played the Astros during the 6 games they were struggling…

They didn’t play all 47 games in that stretch against the west. They only have 26 games scheduled against them this year. And the bad, bad West as you keep calling it, is poised to send Houston (89-49) and Seattle (77-61) to the postseason. Boston is 10-3 against those two teams…

And are you implying the decades-old practice of using RHP to face a RHH is a new-fangled analytics thing? And not something MLB has been employing for decades?? It’s one thing to not understand the analytics. It’s another to have no idea what they are and still complain about them…

The 3 batter minimum rule wasn’t analytics driven. It was due to September roster expansion and some managers (I’m looking at you, Bruce Bochy) would drag innings on forever by maximizing his 14 man bullpen…

No you don’t. Even this years team was good. After a horrible 10-19 start, they made it back to 43-33. They didn’t, as you repeatedly claim, have that 33-14 run against the weaker AL West. They had it because they had a pitching staff that worked. What detailed them was that same staff - mostly the rotation - all getting injured at once. The biggest lie in sports is “Everyone has injuries; that’s just an excuse.” Not all injuries are equal and certainly not all teams get hit equally. There’s a reason the Sox are one of how many teams in MLB with only 1 pitcher with 100 IP at this point in the season?

I’ve always heard baseball is the only sport where the defense has the ball. Although one might think Cricket also counts, although I am not sure they call it a ball…

I don’t like the shift, but I don’t like the idea of banning defensive alignments and strategies. I hated watching managers change pitchers every batter, but that doesn’t mean I like the 3 batter minimum rule.

Again, the NFL has rules on what the offense can’t use for a formation. Defense can put anyone anywhere on their side of the line…

Also soccer/football has 4 officials, not three. And that’s not counting the two video officials who work every game…

While used there, the Olympic officiating has gone much further. They’re using AI to see if the butterfly strike is performed properly. They’re trying it out in the “judgement sports” to see if certain stunts are performed properly. They use it in curling. They really do. Not sure how or why but they do. Also I want to say goals in Ilympuc hockey are called using AI. Oh and there’s the aforementioned tennis. Some day I imagine it will be used in boxing to end bouts before it’s too late…

We are talking about alignments and formations. And if we stick to that topic - none. When was the last time you saw an NFL defense called for an illegal formation? Or any penalty other than offsides (you know, that wrong side of the ball thing I mentioned earlier)?

While not right-handed (which really shouldn’t matter here), they do still have Hosmer, who can be in the DH/1b mix. If they sign someone else to be the primary DH - Mancini? Bell? Whoever? - that player doesn’t need to play 1b (despite my only naming players who do)…

Had Hanley not banged up his shoulder on the monster. His first month back in Boston was the road to an MVP trophy. And maybe if they never signed Sandoval, then Hanley doesn’t have to play LF….

Or, fire him because too many Sox fans can’t handle one bad season or one bad trade. Even you said he’s not doing a good job. Did you have that same feeling 12 months ago?
