Chacon looked weird. Johnson and Strahm both made weird choices that contributed to their visual unpleasantness. And lest we forget Willie McGee, the former Cardinal outfielder who was nicknamed “E.T.” and of whom other players said “he doesn’t have to play defense. The ball sees him out there and just goes somewhere else.”

Randy Johnson. Strahm is pretty bad. But Johnson in his stubbly-faced, greasy-haired, Diamondback days with that freakishly small head sitting a top that elongated body. He just didn’t look human…

I don't know. They might be better than you think. My only complaint about this bullpen so far is that Matt Strahm might be the ugliest player I've ever seen...

Over the last 4 years, ERod has pitched 104 IP more than Hill (628 to 524), had a worse ERA and ERA+, but had a better FIP. Of course, he also costs nearly 4 times as much. For one season, Hill is very capable of replacing ERod quite successfully in the rotation and also increases any chance of extending Devers and/or Bogaerts…

But if you can’t find an acceptable multi year deal for a desirable pitcher, what’s wrong with one year deals for pitchers with pretty damn solid track records? Hill has certainly shown he can miss time, but if he stays healthy, he’s more “bargain” than “basement”…

That’s not a bad deal at all if he stays healthy. Unlike other expensive pitching contracts, even if Whitlock pitches like a #3 or #4 starter, he is paid like one anyway and leaves room for more expensive pitchers or isn’t priced out of the trade market…

The pitching hasn’t been the problem so far. The offense has scored 4 runs in the last 19 innings. They were no-hit by the Yankee pen over 6 yesterday. Certainly there is plenty of time for these to flip and the pitching to become the problem, but right now, it’s not. Blaming the pen or the starters or the way Cora used them is just looking past a team that has only driven in 2 RISP in the last 19 innings, and one of them was a ghost runner…

The Sox lost 29yo Eduardo Rodriguez to free agency after a season in which he threw 157 IP with a 4.74 ERA. They replaced him with 42yo Rich Hill, who threw 158 IP with a 3.84 ERA. But because Hill is older, this is considered “bargain basement” and a downgrade. Right? I mean, it’s certainly not because Hill outpitched ERod last year…

I think the Sox have realized spending on pitching is extremely risky. The Sox current ace was the last time they really spent on a pitcher and he is on the shelf again and in the last 3 seasons has only pitched 190 IP total (and currently not counting). While people make a big deal of the collapse of Barnes after he received his contract, which is up for debate, there’s really no pitcher on the Sox who has been failing to live up to his deal more than Sale…

Pivetta’s pitch count was very low and the bullpen was used a lot the day before. I can see why he did it…

Really the big problem with the starters has been the long ball 10.2 IP 4BB 11K. Only 9 hits but 4 HRs.

MLB banned sticky stuff on June 21. From that date until his last 9 IP of his season in which he totally fell apart, Barnes threw 17 1P and had a 1.15 ERA and a .530 OPSA. I have no idea if he used sticky stuff ever, or if he continued to after the ban. But his collapse certainly didn’t coincide with the ban like it did for Richards and Perez. As for his usage and potential over usage, certainly also a potential factor. Especially after the shortened 2020 season. 2021 was a career year for him, but his contract also essentially paid him like Joe Kelly, another pitcher not exactly known for his consistent performance. But as of right now, I’m very hesitant to say his days may be over

Barnes has thrown a total of 17 innings since signing this contract. In the first 8 of those innings, he had a 1.13 ERA and .485 OPSA. His collapse was all of 9 innings, folks. Nine innings total. Terrible innings, yes. But still only 9 innings. Injury? Fatigue? Not sure but declaring him dead just yet might be a tad premature…
