Really it is too early to give up on Duran, but his age plus lack of success in any aspect of the game is extremely discouraging. Franchy isn’t a rookie, and he also isn’t a first baseman. And he probably isn’t an MLB starter. The Sox haven’t shown all that much faith in him either. But if he’s a fourth OF, that’s not the worst thing. I’m surprised how many have written off Winckowski and Crawford, considering the two have combined for about 150 IP this year. They’ve both given reasons to be discouraged as well as reasons to be encouraged….

I don’t have one either way. I’m not even handing 1b to him over Hosmer next season. (Not that my opinion matters there.) The Sox have had what 10 or so rookies this year, all of whom have played more than Casas. And how many of them have people already given up on? (In the case of Ort, I can understand it, since he’s already over 30.)

Guarding the lines is a defensive strategy. While it’s probably not close enough for some to draw the parallel, it is a defensive re-positioning based on game situations. I don’t like changes that limit unpopular strategies. I don’t care if people like the shift. It’s not a good precedent. And how do you enforce it? Can shortstops still cheat up the middle? How far into right-center can the CF go and still be within the rules. You can sit here and cheer all you want; it’s not going away. Teams are still going to move those fielders over as far as they’re legally allowed to…

It’s ridiculous to even ask, but the fact that many have already given up on Crawford and Winckowski shows the patience we have for minor league talent around here. “I mean, Casas has been up nearly all week. And he’s done NOTHING to get into the ROY conversation!! Effiin overrated ‘prospect’.”

Why? All other sports do it. Do you also think the NFL should ban nickel back package, 3 WR sets, tackle eligible plays, and 2 TE formations? And make every team standardize only on the 3-4 defensive line? MLB rules state you get 9 defenders. I have no problem with someone strategizing the best place to play them and even less when some clever hitter (or runner) takes advantage

First of all, tryi g to decide whether a 95mph baseball touched any part of an invisible box that varies in size from hitter to hitter is an insanely difficult task. Have you ever seen a 95mph fastball and how fast it looks when it’s coming at you? Me neither. I could barely see anything over 85mph. I could see needing help here. As for that little box, most fans who complain about umps thought they could call balls and strikes from their Lazy Boys long before that TV square existed anyway. And the amazing part was that they could do it without compensating for that offset angle created by the position of the CF camera. In fact now I bet those same fans are even angrier because they think the umpire can see that little box, too, and is deliberately ignoring to hurt their team…

Another OBP outfielder is Yelich. Yelich is owed $156mill over the next years, which looked like a bargain 3 years ago whrn he was hitting 40HRs with an OPS over 1.000. The last couple years, he’s been more of a .790OPS guy with 9-12HRs. The core of Milwaukee’s team that keeps them competitive is the pitching - specifically Burnes, Woodrruff, Peralta and Williams. All of them will be in various stages of arbitration in the next couple seasons. Might the Brewers be open to a Yelich/Hosmer swap? Yelich plus $39mill for Hosmer, meaning Milwaukee essentially takes over Hosmer’s contract and the Sox get Yelich for an AAV of $19.1mill. Milwaukee saves $117 mill for pitching arb cases and upgrades defensively over Rowdy “Move me to DH” Tellez at 1b. The Sox get Yelich, who, despite his power struggles, still has a .360 OBP since 2019…

A week or two ago, Hugh (I think?) and I were talking about how too many people have already given up on Winckowski and Crawford. After a few posts about giving up too early on young pitchers, a few posters chimed in on how they haven’t given up on Bello yet. Really? Haven’t given up yet on the 22yo kid who throws 98mph with (at the time) like 18 IP for his career? Not exactly what I meant by being patient with younger pitchers. I don’t think it’s exactly time to give up on Winckowski (or Crawford) just yet…

Seriously? Last year, the Cubs traded Javier Baez to the Mets at the deadline and Baez played well for his new team, earning 1.9 bWAR. In return the Cubs got a 19yo OF in low A ball. Baez has moved on and signed with Detroit. That 19yo kid, named Pete Crow-Armstrong, cracked the BA Top 100 this year, put up a 1.000 OPS in A ball, got promoted to high A, and climbed to the top spot in the Cubs rankings. Oh, and Google best minor league defensive center fielder 2022, and he’s the top match. But they gave up 1.9 bWAR. Did the Cubs win or lose that trade?

I don’t think comparing Winckowski and his 68IP and half a season under his belt to Benintendi his 540 PA this season. Playing time is part of the fWAR calculation, as it’s a measure of accomplishment, not ability. Also Winckowski has 5 years left and Benintendi is effectively a free agent now..

The irony there is if the Sox went into “sell mode” at the deadline, maybe Devers takes a few extra days and comes back at full strength. But because they were still going for it, they may have the worse Devers product…

I don’t know if Devers is 100% or not. Supposedly this was just a scheduled day off. The sad thing is, I can totally understand using McGuire over Devers as a pinch hitter given how both have hit over the last 6 weeks. Almonte? That does raise the question about Devers…

The trade has been unpopular since the day it was announced, but it wasn’t as bad IMO. The Sox acquired Bradley to improve OF defense, and I. That respect it worked. When Kike went down, the Sox were 29-27 and amidst a ferric hot streak, this despite a 10-19 start in which the Sox simply didn’t hit. Since Bradley got realeased and the Sox had to cobble together anyone to play CF and RF, we saw how horrific OF defense can contribute to bringing team down. Bradley’s offense - even from the ninth spot - was obviously a huge factor in his release, but I still don’t dislike this trade and actually dislike the release of Bradley much more…
