    Because: 1. He sucks at catching and his tendency to set up too close to hitters proved dangerous. He broke his left arm when it was struck by JD Martínez mid-swing. 2. St. Louis had multiple catching options and no first baseman. Last year they carried 3 catchers not counting Contreras. Ivan Herrera’s arm surgery limited him to DH duties, but they still had Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo doing the catching.

You really can’t (or maybe I should say “shouldn’t “) equate the top 26 roster spots to the final 14, especially since Gasper has an ability Schwarber and Alonso don’t - the ability to be demoted to AAA. Because that is vital for those last 14 roster spots…

    The issue is you’re believing all the negative hype about the offense and thinking it will be among the worst in MLB. Barring injuries, it won’t. And the reality of needing superstar talent to carry an offense is not true. The Brewers scored the third most runs in MLB last year, and they did it without a single starter posting an .800 OPS. And they did it teams that had Alonso and Schwarber in their star-laden lineups actually scored fewer runs than the Brewers and the Red Sox…

    Not so sure. This team wasn’t so incompetent ladt year, when they scored 12 runs fewer than the American League champion Blue Jays, and actually outscored the Phillies. This year, the offense should be at least as good as last season’s. And the SP should be much better…

    It’s not a question of whether or not you’re satisfied or holding the Sox to a different standard. 89-90 wins is all but a guarantee of postseason play and youre not punishing the Sox by saying they’re going to win that many games and miss the postseason. Because someone is going and it’s solely based on wins. MLB isnt going to tell the Red Sox “Sorry, yes, you won enough games but you neeed a better DH.” Does the AL features 6 offenses guaranteed to win more games with their prolific scoring? If so, who?

    No team since the current postseason was implemented has won as many as 89 games and failed to get into playoffs. One team won 88 games and missed. 89 wins puts their playoff likelihood well over 95%. At that point, your actually attributing more wins to other teams who have more flaws than Boston…
