    Sogard vs Hamilton on defense are good players to put into the hypothetical example for defense. If you hit each 100 identical ground balls, Sogard would get to 80 but make every play. Hamilton would get to all 100 but make 10 errors…

    I’ve spent a fair amount of time making anti-Alonso arguments - none of which had anything to do with the Polar Bear himself (except for when I pick on how when he runs and looks like a mannequin in an earthquake). But the pro-Alonso arguments are easy. First of all, while expensive, he is still likely to command less money years and money than the standout 2b/3b free agents. Also - no QO. And let’s face it - whether you agree with me that he runs like a mannequin in an earthquake or that he runs like a penguin on cocaine, these are fun things to watch in both cases…

    Romy does lack Hamilton’s range, but probably has the best arm of the three…

    As much as Hamilton was a disappointment at SS, let’s not be rash and default promote Sogard ahead of him. Between Hamilton, Sogard and Romy Gonzalez, the Sox are stockpiling utility infielders with limited SS skills. Of the three, Romy, maybe, is the best SS?

    Sogard has that gritty thing going where does lots and lots of little things right but his ceiling is capped by MLB-fringe talent. His style is reminiscent of Pedroia in many ways, but he is a Kia Sedona compared to Pedroia’s Porsche Boxster…

    Thats one possibility. Yandy and Bo Bichette? Yandy and Gleyber Torres? Ok not as much fun. The point is the Sox need two infielders. If they blow their budget on Alonso, then what? I used Rengifo as the cheap alternative, but we all know it’s more likely to be Hamilton/Romy. I would much prefer fewer stereotypical 7/8/9 hitters and get two actual bats. And I think you can get more for less money at 1b than at 2b or 3b…

    That could come down to whether or not they keep Abreu and still platoon him. (Don’t platoon him!) Also does Eaton have an option? If not, that works against him. The Sox could have as few as 3 position players on the 40 man that are in the minors (assuming maximum of 24 pitchers on the 40 man). Figure two slots go to Campbell’s and Password. Sogard might be the third. Not sure if Eaton can be if necessary…

    I’m not throwing a number at the budget, but rather simply assuming lowest total cost for maximum improvement. I doubt the Sox are able or want to shed many of their salaries. I doubt they can move Hicks, for example., will be tough to move and the Sox might not even want to. Campbell is someone I don’t think they are eager to move just yet as well. To me, I think the best addition at 1b would be Yandy Diaz (1 yr $12mill). The biggest obstacle is obvious - getting him as he isnt a free agent just yet. BTV tells me a fair trade is Kyle Harrison, and I would make that deal yesterday but I don’t know if Tampa does. (All my calls to Eric Neander are still unreturned.) Diaz lacks Alonso’s power, but is a much better overall hitter and the cost is believed to be 10% total and maybe 40% of the AAV. To me, that makes the most sense as it leaves more room to add another good bat. Again - think Bregman or Gleyber Torres instead of Rengifo or similar…

    Naylor’s pull tendencies and extension talks with Seattle probably eliminate him from consideration. Try using the 75% properly on non-decimal stats. For example, Pete Alonso averages 28 Rbat per year and will cost $150mill for 5 years. If I could get Rhys “Bob”Hoskins (18 Rbat per year, so 64%) for two years $20mill, why pay up for Alonso ? With Hoskins, I can round out my infield with Bregman. Sign Alonso and you’re probably limited to Luis Rengifo…

    Ok. I think on the 40 man roster front, Grissom, Criswell and Lowe are definite departures. Winckowski and Moran are possible. Wong is possible but very situational so not likely. No idea on Kelly and Murphy…

    Guerrero does have a good arm and might not be as ready as you like, but that doesn’t make him DFA material. As for getting hit on the head vs Hamilton’s BABIP, can’t it be both?
