    You are hung up on strike zone challenges, once even making a point that the Yankees had meeting upon meeting to delegate their usage. Worth pointing out at the time, no team ran up more unsuccessful challenges than the Yankees. I do somewhat agree with the catcher strategy, but not because of a lack of faith in the hitters. Catchers around the league are the most successful challengers. The downside to this is, many of them are so good, you’d probably never burn through your two unsuccessful challenges…

    Capra is 29 years old with a career .369 OPS in MLB. Unless the goal is to make everyone else feel better about their numbers, no way they promote Capra. But Ward!! I mean why is his .474 OBP still in AAA? Why did Breslow trade for this guy if he’s not going to use him instead of other players whose offensive talents right now are such that they couldn’t hit the ground if the jumped off a cliff?

    If he doesn’t move there, it might just mean they expect Story back relatively soon and they won’t be re-arranging anyone in the meantime. And the article does blatantly say Monasterio is likely to get the bulk of the SS playing time while Story is out…

    It’s not so surprising about the 4 second year players. The term “sophomore slump” has been around for decades. It’s not so surprising Story would struggle. He’s reaching the end of the road despite being only 33. The injuries and wear and tear might be catching up. Duran? Bad seasons happen, and the guy is a notorious tinkerer when it comes to his swing and his stance, and he can be his own worst enemy. But this level of (non-)production is beyond surprising. And while Yoshida was never a slugger, it’s getting bad with him too. He’s morphing into Freddy Sánchez before our eyes. But at least he keeps up the OBP. But all this at once? Thats just ridiculous. Heck 4 simultaneous sophomore slumps probably defies Vegas odds…

    Duran’s been awful all year, and he’s been in the lineup everyday lately. He had a brief 3 game hot streak, but since then his OPS is about .250. Thats a bad OPS for a pitcher, never mind a leadoff hitter…

    The thing about the Sox is they’re not loaded with veteran players. Narvaez, Anthony, Durbin and Mayer all have less than 2 years. The Sox oldest starter is Contreras (34) and Story is the only other veteran that’s played for another team. After those two, Yoshida is the only other player over 30, and he’s only starting due to injury. It is a young team…

    If a bunch of players had career years ladt year and reverted to career norms this year, this is a plausible theory. But Jarren Duran is .250 below his previous career worst OPS. He didn’t forget how to hit because Bregman left. Story is also have a career worst season. Yoshida is having his career worst SLG. That’s not all because Bregman left. Might as well ask how these players even got to MLB in the first place without Bregman…

    Thats the straight baseball answer. But not the full reason many trades are made. Chapman and Adames have a combined 9+ seasons of control remaining at a cost of $280mill or so. Yoshida and Story have about 3+ combined seasons at about $70mill. Boston has a spending issue with fans. San Fran has an issue with too much money committed. Sure Chapman and Adames might turn around, but when they get down to 3+ years of control left, they’re likely to be worse and more expensive than Yoshida/Story. And Adames’ salary jumps from $13mill in 2026 to $31mill in 2027. This is the time to trade him. Does any of this influence your answer?

    But they weren’t this bad before Bregman, and while he apparently did help some teammates, that doesn’t explain why half of them have plummeted below pre-Bregman levels, unlike Houston when Bregman left. He also appears to have had minimal impact on the Cubs so far this year, if any impact at all..

    I’ve been wondering that. As hard as I’ve been on Durbin, I did notice he started equally poorly last year, with a .501 OPS as late as May 20th. If he can repeat his June-Oct performance he would be acceptable. Story? I’m ok with his benching. Duran? Biggest disappointment on this team to the point I’d be ok watching the Sox role the dice with Braiden Ward. Especially since I’ve noticed how Tampa has taken advantage of teams no longer knowing how to defend bunts…
