  1. Thats one possibility. Yandy and Bo Bichette? Yandy and Gleyber Torres? Ok not as much fun. The point is the Sox need two infielders. If they blow their budget on Alonso, then what? I used Rengifo as the cheap alternative, but we all know it’s more likely to be Hamilton/Romy. I would much prefer fewer stereotypical 7/8/9 hitters and get two actual bats. And I think you can get more for less money at 1b than at 2b or 3b…
  2. That makes me think Eaton’s makes more sense than Sogard…
  3. Sogard is more popular because he actually had a pretty good series in NY. But if he comes back, he is headed to Worcester until needed…
  4. Make that call, Breslow!! (He probably did last July.)
  5. That could come down to whether or not they keep Abreu and still platoon him. (Don’t platoon him!) Also does Eaton have an option? If not, that works against him. The Sox could have as few as 3 position players on the 40 man that are in the minors (assuming maximum of 24 pitchers on the 40 man). Figure two slots go to Campbell’s and Password. Sogard might be the third. Not sure if Eaton can be if necessary…
  6. I’m not throwing a number at the budget, but rather simply assuming lowest total cost for maximum improvement. I doubt the Sox are able or want to shed many of their salaries. I doubt they can move Hicks, for example., will be tough to move and the Sox might not even want to. Campbell is someone I don’t think they are eager to move just yet as well. To me, I think the best addition at 1b would be Yandy Diaz (1 yr $12mill). The biggest obstacle is obvious - getting him as he isnt a free agent just yet. BTV tells me a fair trade is Kyle Harrison, and I would make that deal yesterday but I don’t know if Tampa does. (All my calls to Eric Neander are still unreturned.) Diaz lacks Alonso’s power, but is a much better overall hitter and the cost is believed to be 10% total and maybe 40% of the AAV. To me, that makes the most sense as it leaves more room to add another good bat. Again - think Bregman or Gleyber Torres instead of Rengifo or similar…
  7. Naylor’s pull tendencies and extension talks with Seattle probably eliminate him from consideration. Try using the 75% properly on non-decimal stats. For example, Pete Alonso averages 28 Rbat per year and will cost $150mill for 5 years. If I could get Rhys “Bob”Hoskins (18 Rbat per year, so 64%) for two years $20mill, why pay up for Alonso ? With Hoskins, I can round out my infield with Bregman. Sign Alonso and you’re probably limited to Luis Rengifo…
  8. Ok. I think on the 40 man roster front, Grissom, Criswell and Lowe are definite departures. Winckowski and Moran are possible. Wong is possible but very situational so not likely. No idea on Kelly and Murphy…
  9. Guerrero does have a good arm and might not be as ready as you like, but that doesn’t make him DFA material. As for getting hit on the head vs Hamilton’s BABIP, can’t it be both?
  10. Dalton Rushing is unlikely, but Ive mentioned him because the Sox have tried before. Trading fir another catcher might not require opening a 40 man roster spot if said catcher is acquired for a player on the 40 man roster. I do agree there is no crunch. Even when Sandlin gets added…
  11. I think you gave up on Guerrero far too quickly, and Hamilton is better than he gets credit for. I like Moran, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was DFAd…
  12. As controversial as it is to say, I’m not sure Connor Wong is the lock to be tendered that many think, especially if an available catcher that can hit can be found…
  13. Bassett is depth and back end at this point in his career. His splitter and slider are getting worse. His fastball will be next
  14. It’s never true. But the hyperbolic point is that injuries are minimized early in the off-season..
  15. Assuming either is on the radar at all. I assume Bregman is the top target, and one that excludes Alonso. The big downside to Alonso. Is it’s easier to get 75% of his production I for 25% of his price tag (numbers not exact). The trade market might also carry 1b options beyond Alonso, Suarez, Hoskins, Bell, and the confusingly never-mentioned Luis Arraez. Christian Walker is reportedly and unexcitedly available. As much as no one fantasizes about him, he is a step or two above Abraham Toro. Yandy Diaz is reportedly available. Ryan Mountcastle is a non-tender candidate that can be had. MJ Melendez is reportedly available and some say a non-tender possibility. Spencer Torkelson has fallen from grace. And Thats just a cursory look at the AL…
  16. Everybody is healthy in November…
  17. Duran for Skubal!! Makes sense for both teams! Except Detroit. It really makes very little sense for them…
  18. And not by Barnes & Barnes enchanting melody “Fish Heads”? And who knew one of the Barnes’s in that group was none other than former “Lost in Space” child actor Billy Mumy? (Truth)
  19. Really? With Alex Cora managing? He’d platoon his own mother if some other mom hit LHP better…
  20. King was teammates there with former Blue Jay/Brewer Tom Pannone…
  21. So what exactly is the difference between a #2 and a #3 starting pitcher?
  22. Tender Casas. Tender Houck. Why do you think Casas is polarizing? He does seem a little goofy, but that’s not necessarily bad. Plus it probably helps that he seems to be fluent (or close to it) in Spanish. Really the only non-tenders should be Lowe, Grissom and maybe Winckowski…
  23. With Skubal, maybe McCaffrey has some inside track about who Detroit wants. My only channel is making fair deals on BTV. Skubal has a surplus value of $51.6mill. A fair deal on BTV is Campbell, Arias and Paez. But when it comes to acquiring players like Skubal, my logic is “if you’re fine giving it up, it isn’t enough.” I’m very ok with that trade package. So it probably isn’t enough. One year of Skubal is almost an even swap for Mayer and far less than Duran. But that doesn’t mean Detroit won’t insist on one or both and then some…
  24. Tread lightly. Imanaga collapsed badly in the second half of his second season. Despite this, he was immensely popular among Cubs’ fans and was a face of the franchise. The Marquee channel that broadcasts the Cubs’ most aired commercial for the team featured Imanaga in the shower singing “Go Cubs Go.” Despite his popularity, thr Cubs - the team that knows him best and knows how popular he is - still chose to release him. Most likely they don’t think of him as worth a $19mil AAV over the next 3 years. And if he isn’t, does he really qualify as that missing “#2 starter”?
  25. The Sox were a good team last year despite deploying Toro/Gonzalez at 1b and Campbell’s/Hamilton at 2b and getting sub-.700 OPS from both position. Also with Yoshida sitting out the bulk of the year and then getting off to a slow start before finally heating up in September. And then there were the injuries. Brining back Bregman, getting a full season of Mayer (likely in a platoon), getting a full season of Yoshida, and then upgrading at 1b over career AAAA bat Toro does represent an improvement. Sure they cannot bank on health, but they also cannot bank on any new free agent being healthy either. Not to mention the offense wasn’t so incompetent that it needs an overhaul. And reportedly they want to add a frontline pitching arm…
