First of all, it was seven off the top of my head. Was I supposed to name every young pitcher who was traded to disprove that no young pitchers get traded? Second, there are two philosophies with young pitchers. Some teams E absolutely do like to keep them. But others don’t mind dealing them because they pan out at a much lower rate than position players. I only named pitchers who have panned out; the list of high profile pitching prospects that didn’t and got traded is much, much larger…

Until this year, it is hard to argue Trout had a weak lineup around him. Ohtani did win two MVP awards to go with Trout's three (along with four other second place finishes). The Angels have struggled mightily to get a good pitching staff, largely due to a weak farm system and some very questionable free agent signings. It seems like the only free agent SPs they pay heavily for are ones coming off one good season after several seasons of mediocrity or worse. That's simply a bad strategy... -
No one was unhappy with Sale as much as they were frustrated with his frequent injuries and possibly unhappy with the length of his extension. And the general attitude of the guy does depend heavily on his current health. Many were upset with Bloom for not trading Sale and his entire contract for nothing. And now many are upset with Breslow for trading Sale and getting back a young MLB player...

You just said other teams don't trade them. I named several examples of pitchers they did trade. Naming one team that does not have one (unless you count Pivetta) doesn't disprove this. But if you like, the Sox did trade for Pedro and Sale, which have been two of the best TOR arms in the last 30 years, and the Sox traded for them both...

Also possible. I don't know if they possess the same "damn the luxury tax - full throttle" mentality you see in Los Angeles and New York. But I do think they were in a better position to take the risk on Sale's health due to their pitching-heavy minor league system. At worst, Sale buys some time for their prospects if he can't stay on the field...

You can. The primary reason I wouldn't is the Sox have better outfield depth than starting pitching depth...

Obviously this team would be better today with Sale instead of Grissom. But at the time this trade was made, everyone anticipated the Sox were a given to be in last place in the AL East and out of the postseason picture probably fairly early, and Sale's involvement was a huge question mark given the past 4 seasons. Could they have waited and dealt him at the deadline? Sure. But then you're gambling that he doesn't get hurt again, a gamble they have lost 4 seasons in a row...

The entire premise of this thread is that StephCurry does not have any faith in Duran maintaining this level of play. He may be right; he may be wrong. He's no saying his assessment is superior to the Sox scouts. Just that he is putting more faith in the pre-2024 version. And if anyone does think this is as good as it gets, it is certainly a valid viewpoint to think Duran is a logical trade candidate if the Sox are out of contention by the deadline...

If the Sox stay in the hunt, they cetainly cannot trade Duran. He is a big part of their limited offense. If they are 10 games out of the third wild card in July, then what? Obviously they will try to move as many potential free agents as they can - Jansen, O'Neill, Martin, Pivetta. They probably won't be able to move them all, but they will probably try. But if some team does make an intriguing offer for Duran, do you hold? We've seen controllable outfielders get some fairly impressive returns. i remember when Adam Eaton was traded on his team-friendly contract to the Nationals for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning. That's a franchise-altering return. If the Sox can get such a return, should they do it? The other option is to keep Duran for his last 3 seasons, which doesn't look like such a bad option either...

There were plenty of experienced arms who signed MiLB deals. The Sox signed none of them. Even if that starter comes through with a 5.00 ERA, it is still better than burning out the bullpen every 5 games. That will come back to haunt the sox later if they have to keep doing it...
