  1. So one starting position player? And that one split time with Coco Crisp…
  2. So… Cooperstown?
  3. You said the need at 2b “just isn’t there like it was before.” But in reality, it clearly is. They just started giving Sogard a chance as their seventh second baseman in 110 games. Grissom will likely play there again this year. He’s a big part, if not the entire reason Boston had to pay $17mill of Sale’s salary. And they very likely haven’t moved on just because he didn’t set the AL on fire in his first 87 PA at age 23…
  4. 2b is all set? The Sox have been using Hamilton (.627 OPS since June 12), Westbrook(.584 OPS), and now Sogard (18 career PAs). There might be room for improvement…
  5. I’d be very surprised if Grissom didn’t get another chance. Breslow wanted him for a reason, and I doubt that reason involved giving up on him after 180 PAs. If Grissom continues to flummox, Hamilton and/or Mayer probably become options. And I thought you were all about trading Mayer…
  6. Grissom has to earn the role but Mayer doesn’t? I think next year, Mayer and Anthony start in Polar Park. The Sox could start with: C - Teel 1b - Casas 2b - Grissom 3b - Devers SS - Story LF - Duran CF - Rafaela RF - Abreu DH - Yoshida BN - Wong BN - Refsnyder BN - Hamilton BN - ??? Romy? Or ? No need to load the team with rookies and strip it of veterans so quickly. Yes, the Sox made the playoffs in 1975. Have they had 3 rookie starting position players on a postseason team at any other point in the half century since then?
  7. I’m not so sure. His month to month improvement is really his best selling point. But if the Sox have a ROY candidate, it’s Abreu…
  8. If he played CF and not SS, he might find more chatter…
  9. Grissom? Also, that’s a lot of rookies for one team, especially since Teel is likely catching. Three rookies in the starting lineup is like planning to not make the postseason, or to get wiped out immediately if you do…
  10. Who in RF? Or are you moving Rafaela to CF? If so, who plays SS?
  11. Rafaela is tied for 23rd among all AL rookies in fWAR. He’s tied for fifth on the Red Sox alone, with Cam Booser and trailing Abreu, Slaten, Criswell, and Hamilton I just don’t see him as a legitimate ROY candidate…
  12. But the sale time is over. And if Yoshida stays hot up to (and through?) the postseason, do you still sell?
  13. Eovaldi was the most recent “prospect for pitching” trade. Pivetta was the most recent “scrap heap veterans for pitching” trade. Both benefited Boston more than the other team…
  14. Billy Bean (no “e”) passed away. Bean was the former Tiger/Dodger/Padre who came out after retiring from MLB, and eventually became MLBs Ambassador for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. No movie and never portrayed by Brad Pitt…
  15. What the %#%+! are you talking about? They were one of the plagues that struck Egypt. Blood, frogs, lice, locusts, and then gopher balls…
  16. Record against everyone but the White Sox (not counting tonight) Red Sox: 58-49 Twins: 51-46 Royals: 51-49
  17. Exactly. Part (most?) of the reason for those off days was to keep the bench active. But the bench has been very active since they’re all in platoons…
  18. That depends on how you look at it. Rest days are not only about the starter, but also about getting the bench players the occasional playing time rather than rusting away on the bench. With 3 positions in full platoon, there is no need to find more action for the bench, beyond occasionally giving the catcher’s knees a break…
  19. Except with catchers. 9 innings of squatting is rough on the knees…
  20. Rafaela should be full time CF by then, with either Story or Mayer handling SS…
  21. The 2024 Pale Hose are on pace to have MLB’s worst record since 1916 and most losses since 1899…
  22. The Royals and the Twins are both 12-1 against the White Sox. The Tigers are 5-1. The Guardians are an appalling 5-5. The Guardians and the Rays (2-4 vs CWS) have combined for 1/3 of the White Sox wins…
  23. Not so sure we see Mayer up before Story gets hurt again. Unless Grissom just cannot get going again, or gets dealt…
  24. Only 5. He has the ability to platoon, meaning he can hit LHP. But Cora is clearly reluctant to use him that way outside of giving Yoshida some time off. And it makes sense. If Wong DHd and Jansen got hurt, the Sox would have to have the pitcher bat. If Abreu and Smith and now Sogard are all already platooning, the Sox don’t have a viable option for a regular platoon at DH as well. Now if they start using Abreu (or Anthony) full time against LHP, that situation changes. With 4 bench spots, 4 platoons necessitate using the starting catcher every game in some capacity. And that’s really not a good plan. And Cora knows this…
  25. How does a team with 4 bench spots have 5 RHH platoon options? Obviously one of Jansen or Wong starts. Two others (Refsnyder in RF, Gonzalez at 1b) are already platooning at other positions. And O’Neill already starts in the OF against LHP, among others. So really, he has the backup catcher as an option. But many managers would never do that for obvious reasons…
