  1. His proposal was Arozarena for Casas and Yoshida with no money involved (which he comically thinks Seattle would be the team to walk away from). It’s one of those “but it works for my team” trades that makes no sense for Boston as it creates voids at 1b and DH while overfilling their OF. And creates excessive bench spending in Seattle. I don’t think either side would like that trade. Now if Seattle actually likes Yoshida (unknown) they might deal Garver for him if the money makes sense..
  2. There was some irony with you using the exact same word you called out for moon to justify using…. ;)
  3. When was the last time the Sox paid market price for quality starting pitching that panned out?
  4. The difference seems to be only one of them requires unreasonable trade requests involving trading a league average left fielder for a minimum wage 1b with all star potential in order to climb back into relevance…
  5. After all the money changes hands, the Mariners would get Yoshida for $9mill per year. That’s only slightly more than Isiah Kiner-Falefa money. That alone makes Yoshida an important piece. Or they could roll out Garver and the same lineup that missed the postseason in 2024…
  6. Do they need to be there in April? Over the course of a season, players will get hurt, released, demoted, benched, traded, etc. When was the last time a team went 162 games without calling someone up? The opportunities will be there. No need to force them, and certainly no need to rely on them from day one…
  7. I hope the Sox prioritize defense at the catching position, and don’t focus on their opportunity to get a RHH in the lineup. If they get a catcher that can hit from the right side, he better also be a really good catcher. And if the new catcher can’t hit, someone has to bat ninth anyway…
  8. Hey if you’re going to call that nutty, you have to back it up!! :)
  9. It’s a perfect solution for the Mariners!! Trade away your $12mill starting left fielder so you can better afford a $13mill backup catcher!!
  10. This is why I try Garver. If he fails, he doesn’t have to stay all year. And then the guys with options like Valdez can be a plan. Or one of the untried prospects. If Yoshida flounders, he’s back in 2026, and likely 2027 and 2028 as well. If the goal is to unload Yoshida, I think this is the most risk-averse plan…
  11. If an armed brigade of aliens came to Earth and challenged the Yankees to best of seven series with the human race at stake, meaning if Yankees won, the aliens go home dejected. But if the aliens won, they would destroy our cities, pillage our resources, torture and enslave all survivors, and have their way with our women, I would still struggle to root for the Yankees…
  12. Maybe because they committed $700mill to an elite DH largely due to his two-way abilities despite his having had TJ twice already? His debut in LA was historic, but a $700mill DH is the reason luxury taxes exist. How many seasons before his third and final TJ ends his pitching career once and for all? I’ll set the over under at 3.5. And then I’ll take the under…
  13. I would be surprised if any were considered for DH. But if they dealt Yoshida (and $13mill) for Garver, the Sox save $27mill over three seasons - equal to paying half of Yoshida’s contract. If Garver struggles, he’s a DFA candidate with no impact on the payroll beyond 2025. At that point, you can bring up Anthony/Campbell/whoever to replace his vacated spot and it winds up being exactly like your scenario…
  14. What’s your point? BTV never says any team would make a trade. And if anyone turns down Casas/ Yoshida for Arozarena, it’s probably not Seattle. But it if they do like Yoshida, I would think unloading Garver would certainly be Seattle’s preference, especially with Boston chipping in 25% of Yoshida’s contract. I think the Mariners like Arozarena more than you do. Not to mention, in your proposal, Seattle pays for all of Yoshida and Garver and then has to fill a vacancy in LF as well. And Garver becomes a $13mill backup 1b/DH coming off an abysmal season…
  15. Now I admit my source was questionable, but it seems like you’re arguing against the Sox re-investing and investing. I know it’s more complicated than my simplified viewpoint, but there usually is something to simplified viewpoints. For a little clarification, are the Sox re-investing in this franchise or not? Sometimes it seems to me like their spending splurges are more related to PR than to actual baseball…
  16. MLB payroll sites on the Internet are more variable than weather sites. So who knows what the actual numbers are. But according to Sportrac, per Baseball Prosoectus, Sox payroll dropped $65mill from 2019 to 2024, using opening day payrolls. (Final numbers from 2024 are not in, but will go up due to adding 3 players plus any incentives, etc.) Henry is clearly not investing like he used to, but that’s not exactly news…
  17. f*** Bregman, that whiny little prick. (I call him a “little prick, but he’s much bigger than me.) Problem is, however, finding better options. Free agency has little else besides Eugenio Suarez… Hamilton is the Sox best defensive 2b. And he did hit surprisingly well.
  18. How much of a salary dump is it if the Sox are still paying? And who are all these internal options? If the plan is to pay for the bulk of Yoshida only to give more playing time to someone who spent last year behind Yoshida, I’m not sure what the benefit is. Especially since I have my doubts about Henry spending the savings on a decent solution to fill a need…
  19. If Plan B is Valdez, just keep Yoshida. At least his late season collapse might be related to a shoulder injury.
  20. A Casas/Devers 1b solution would be ideal, but we both know it’s a long shot, and that’s the optimistic viewpoint. Plus it probably only happens if the Sox sign the loathsome Alex Bregman. And Garver is only one year removed from an OPS+ of 138. He does have a bizarre tendency to keep his OPS+ north of 130 in odd-numbered years and south of 100 in even-numbered ones. Not sure why. But if he can keep that trend going for one more year. And if Seattle really does think Yoshida is a viable buy-low solution, Garver is probably on the short list of potentially useful players the Sox can get back for him. And certainly carries the lowest risk of any of them. Valdez is a bad choice for strong side DH. He’s a streaky hitter prone to long slumps, and if the Sox only carry 4 bench players (3 non-catchers), dedicating a spot to a backup DH is unwise. Plus I suspect if Abreu is here, Refsnyder will remain in his platoon role. His UZR numbers are awful, but he’s roughly average in DRS and OAA. And I’m sure that’s enough for Cora and his frequent disregard for defense to trot Refsnyder out to RF vs LHP.
  21. At best he’s a mild step up from Wong. Like going from meningitis to influenza…
  22. Garver should never catch again. Ever. He’s bad at it. But he hits lefties well and has hit well at Fenway through his career. And if he does continue to stink, he’s only on a one year deal right now…
  23. Jeffers is among the worst defensive catchers in MLB. His skillet is remarkably similar to that of Connor Wong…
