  1. Were you posting here in March?
  2. BTV says Yoshida + $13mill for Mitch Garver is a fair deal. And it’s one that could make sense for both teams. But I imagine the uncertainty with Yoshida’s shoulder surgery complicates things…
  3. BTV tells us Ray’s contract is a bigger albatross than Yoshida’s. But SF needs SP more than DHs. Yoshida actually matches up nicely with Jordan Hicks on that site, and I noticed Hicks was bumped out of the rotation at the end of the season. Of course, one Google search later and I learned Hicks was bumped because of a team-imposed innings limit, not due to performance. The bottom line to me is if you hate Yoshida’s contract, why do we think it can be dealt for another contract we don’t hate? There are absolutely worse contracts out there. Some even belonging to contributing players. But what team could use Yoshida? I don’t think SF is the right fit from a baseball standpoint…
  4. It’s a safe bet SF has plenty of players equal to Valdez and Sogard, and might be reluctant to waste valuable 40 man roster spots on the redundancy. Other than Larry’s pipe dream, is there any reason SF would be interested in Yoshida? They likely view Ray as the more valuable contract. And they have internal options at DH…
  5. Of course that also might impede his return should he prefer not to DH…
  6. I wouldn’t agree Yoshida’s contract is preventing the Sox from getting a frontline starter. I think that ship has sailed. The Sox payroll is down some $50mill or so from its peak. You don’t drop that much payroll if you’re continually re-investing…
  7. As position players go, that should be top of the list. And if said catcher can bat right-handed and frame pitches, even better. Jansen is a perfect fit, but Higashioka feels much more likely…
  8. Ok bad math on my part. No idea what I typed in. But case closed? Getting desperate to be correct here? The difference is about 4 games worth of plate appearances. Players who are platooned don’t sit out only 4 games…
  9. The low flying fruit is the bullpen. Moving Yoshida might make some happy, but it’s no guarantee of getting better regardless of how easy it is…
  10. You said Cora was induced to bench him against LHP. Isn’t that a straight platoon?
  11. No doubt, as far as final results go. But BABIP data does suggest he hit the ball a bit better than his numbers indicate, given his GB/FB/LD splits. His .302 BABIP should have been closer to .314, the upshot ring his .280 BA should have been closer to .299, with corresponding adjustments to his OBP and SLG, and ultimately to his OPS, which should have been .038-.040 higher. He is very likely to be the Sox DH again next year, and while he won’t make you forget about Ortiz, he is capable of doing an adequate job of his shoulder holds up…
  12. Bottom line is when he played, he faced LHP at the same rate as any non-platooned lefty in the lineup. Yoshida had more PA vs LHP than platooned players who played more games, like Abreu. The notion that Cora platooned him appears to be rooted in myth…
  13. It doesn’t appear he sat that often as he was facing them with the same frequency as Duran, and Duran had 735 PAs. That percentage is small enough that it can be explained away by Yoshida batting further down in the lineup…
  14. Did he really sit all that often vs LHP? 108 of his 421 PAs were against LHP. That means 30.8% of his PA were against LHP, which is almost identical to Duran (31.2%). And Duran was rarely benched vs anyone…
  15. Couple that with his recent shoulder surgery and his rather hefty contract, and it strongly indicates he will be the Sox starting DH next season…
  16. I hope so. I like Nick Martinez as the SP. While older than Burnes, Snell and Fried, he was just as effective last year and shouldn’t be a budget killer. Of course, the fact that I realize this does mean 30 MLB CBOs do as well. I’ve said before Tanner Scott should be the Sox top priority, but I expect him to attract a lot of attention as well. But the Sox stand a better chance if they can get Martinez on a reasonable deal. A second reliever would be nice, but I can’t really isolate that one good candidate. LHRP Andrew Chafin works for me, but also RHRPs John Brebbia, Jeff Hoffman, Clay Holmes, Jorge Lopez, Ryne Stanek, and Lucas Sims would also work…
  17. He spent time at 2b covering for an injured Bogaerts and at 1b covering for an injured Ha-Seong Kim (with some infield re-arrangement). But when that team is healthy, he’s their starting DH. And he has no power…
  18. So you’re saying if you ran the Giants, you’d trade 6 years of RHSP Hayden Birdsong for Yoshida and cash? Can you get that job please?
  19. Avocado/Beltre was a case where the Sox had a star player and then chose to dump him in pursuit of a different star player. Bad idea, especially since Beltre was working out..
  20. Not to mention, that prolonged stretch still featured some very good starting pitching. The Sox were 14th in SP fWAR for that stretch, and 11th from August 1 on. The big problem was bullpen. Of course, that overhaul has already begun…
  21. Fairly certain the Sox 81-81 record includes the second half. But if you really think the .420 is reality, then I guess getting rid of Sale really was the right move. Also whether or not you think the playoff format is bad is irrelevant; it’s the format and it’s unlikely to change. Accept it. Especially considering one of the three teams left was the last team in to the NL postseason…
  22. That move was what happens when you chase Star players. The Sox had excellent all around corner infield play with Beltre and Youkilis but went and broke it up…
  23. I assume so. Not sure what makes some of them available. Particularly Kirby, Miller and Gilbert, as Dipoto has said he’s not trading starting pitching. But several others as well…
  24. Almost all positions? They missed the postseason by 5 games…
