  1. So… last year’s lineup vs LHP but without O’Neill’s 1.200 OPS? Not sure why Rafaela’s .610 OPS vs LHP is considered part of the solution and not part of the problem. Also, Cora won’t re-arrange the OF vs LHP just to get Ref out of RF. Just like he didn’t last year.
  2. I’m not as urgent on the closer role as many out here. Hendriks was a very solid closer before his injury. He hasn’t pitched in awhile, but he’s not trying to comeback from anything a few dozen pitchers haven’t come back from. But another bullpen arm is always good. The days of needing just 3 shutdown relievers are long gone. And the Sox will probably go through 20 relief pitchers over the course of a season. There are still a few intriguing arms available, even beyond Tanner Scott, whom I’ve heard nothing about all off-season, beyond his hefty contract demand ($80mill over 4 years). The bullpen nowadays pitches 500-700 IP per season. Sox relievers threw 613 IP last year. Not all innnings are critical, but having more arms capable of high leverage innings makes it easier on everyone. Beyond Scott, Kyle Finnegan, Andrew Kittredge, Chris Martin, John Brebbia, Kendall Graveman, Matt Moore, Lou Trivino, Ryne Stanek, Joe Kelly, and a few others could represent upgrades in the bullpen…
  3. I don’t see why they can’t. Having an actual 4th outfielder means Rafaela’s versatility is utilized. If Story comes out, Grichuk/Duvall moves to LF, Duran to CF, Rafaela to SS. Probably better than putting Hamilton or Romy at SS. A fourth OF means likely Romy gets optioned to Worcester. Right now, his role is probably platooning with Yoshida at DH anyway, since he does hit LHP fairly well. The current Sox bench is probably Narvaez (catcher), Hamilton and Romy (utility infielders) and Refsnyder (knows where the OF is). They really don’t have a fourth OF. I don’t see the benefit of carrying two utility infielders and a very weak/borderline questionable OF on the bench. Better off having a catcher, an infielder, an actual outfielder, and whatever you want to call Refsnyder. Especially on a team managed by Alex Cora. Better off starting Duvall or Grichuk on Duran’s or Rafaela’s days off than Refsnyder…
  4. If the Sox prefer a better outfielder than Refsnyder to platoon with Abreu, Duvall isn’t the worst choice. He’s a better fielder than Grichuk. I think Laureano makes the most sense of the three, but he’s likely to command more money than Duvall. Although he’s hardly a bank breaker…
  5. Higher career bWAR. (Both players are tied for career fWAR.) Plays a more difficult position to fill…
  6. Still thinking they go heavy on Bregman, just hopefully not for 6 or 7 years. It’s getting to be fine for a Show of Spending, like we’ve seen in the past…
  7. Kyle Tucker is the top position player…
  8. Almost over? Nearly 30 of the MLBTR top 50 free agents are still available…
  9. I could see Henry authorizing the mess and still holding it against DD. Sounds just like how Ilitch handled him in Detroit. The “payroll mess” was acceptable as long as the team was winning. Seems plausible that his “not a team player” attitude falls into the same category. All of this is acceptable when it’s working. But once it stops, Henry was left with a guy who built an expensive mediocre team and was difficult to work with. That all seems plausible…
  10. Maybe there were health reasons when he sat? Cora has absolutely shown a willingness to play Yoshida in the field at one point. Of course if the Sox demote him to Worcester, not sure how Cora’s usage of him matters. And for the record, Devers’ blatant refusal to move off third is a bigger factor in not acquiring Arenado. With Bregman, the issue besides money is the divide on his position…
  11. Why not? How would you describe the payroll state of the Sox after 2019? When they spent over $240mill on an 84 win team that missed the postseason by a dozen games? And still had $300mill tied up in Sale, Price and Eovaldi, who were all starting to get repeatedly injured, and then couldn’t afford Mookie. And you think he WASN’T fired for that? Seriously? What abominable crime against nature do you think that man committed that led to his firing?
  12. But regardless, it’s going to be Bregman at 2b. This is not a wish; it’s a prediction…
  13. To be fair, hydrants are there to snuff things out and stop disasters. Not sure Thats an insult…
  14. I get they stood to gain nothing from playing their starters, but the Bills didn’t need to tank. They did have 70,000 paying fans in attendance who might not have felt their $200 tickets were so meaningless…
  15. Yoshida’s contract isn’t a big deal. First of all, he is a pretty good hitter. Second, unlike most players paid similarly, Yoshida has options left and can be demoted to Worcester. If he can’t be traded, DH him or D-mote him…
  16. That was bad. I know. I’m hoping they don’t dip below third. Cleveland already lost, but the Browns, Giants and Titans will all try to be in on Cam Ward and Shedur Sanders. I am hoping Travis Hunter can fall to NE. Hopefully one of them can get a win…
  17. I think they keep him, too. My only point is he’s more tradable for more now unless he has an ungodly season, which is possible at his age…
  18. 1. I already made the injury point about Sale and Story. You were supposed to answer that, not ask the question again? 2. My point wasn’t that DD’s bad deals outweighed his good ones. It was that his bad ones were far, far more prohibitive than those silly one year deals for Kluber, etc. Bloom had misses, but DD had bigger misses. And your post made them sound equal..,
  19. True, but as I pointed out, they’re getting back Spencer Strider and Ian Anderson. And they have an All Star pitching in AAA!! Not because of injury, either. He just couldn’t crack the rotation last year. If Atlanta lacks pitching depth, how are we able to have any sort of tradable surplus?
  20. Casas is 24 years old with over 800 career PA and an OPS+ of 125, which is almost identical to that of Devers (126). Unless he is going to have some sort of other worldly season, that lost year of control is a huge factor, especially since it’s a minimum wage one. Control is just as important as ability when trading players (and salary is right there as well).
  21. Atlanta probably won’t turn down pitching, but until the injuries kick in, they’re loaded. Sure Fried is out, but Ian Anderson is back. Followed eventually by Strider. Plus they have Spencer Schwellenbach and the guy who made the second biggest comeback in MLB last year - Reynaldo Lopez. Oh and the biggest comeback, too. They also have some top pitching prospects, like AJ Smith-Shawver and Hurston Waldrop, both of whom are on the cusp. (I think AJSS saw some time last year.) Oh and some vet arms like Grant Holmes holding down the fort. Also their AAA rotation has 25yo former MLB All Star Bryce Elder. Any team with a 25yo former MLB All Star hiding out in AAA because he can’t crack the rotation might have some pretty good pitching depth. But at SS, it appears to be Orlando Arcia or former Oakland A’s batless glove Nick Allen. And that’s it…
  22. There’s a difference between misidentifying talent and signing players who get injured. So Story was a failed signing by Bloom but Sale was a successful one for DD? Seems counterintuitive. DD did have more success stories, but he signed a lot more large deals. And when forced to operate on a budget, he didn’t do so well. Comparing the jobs each one did to each other is not the same at all. Yes Bloom missed on those low impact deals like Kluber, etc. How much did those handicap the team? And why is the $40-50mill spent on those players somehow more debilitating to the Sox than the $320mill plus spent on Price/Sale/Eovadi for which the Sox received about $21 bWAR total?
  23. I’m going with the “I hate this move and it makes only marginal sense at best, so therefore they’re going to do it just to spite me” line of thinking. That kind of logic transcends money…
