  1. One factor is the increase in injuries could be that steroids are no longer as widespread as they used to be…
  2. He certainly does. Despite my prediction the Sox will eventually be the “someone” that signs Bregman, 2b seems like the least of their issues due to the depth of options. Even if Grissom, Hamilton, etc. dont pan out, they at least have Campbell.
  3. That’s why we dealt Sale. Are we back to labeling every player coming off an injury as “injury-prone”? I mean, with the obvious exception of 2020, Devers hasn’t had fewer that 600 PA in a season since 2018. And is Grissom really “injury prone”?
  4. They’re all options. But the Sox clearly saw something in Grissom that they felt made him worth taking on money in the Sale trade. And Atlanta saw enough in Grissom that they spent include him in that trade unless Boston paid up. Unless they sign Bregman (still in play), Grissom is the likeliest member of the Sox organization to get first crack at 2b…
  5. Or - crazy thought here - they could start the year with Casas (1b), Grissom (2b), Devers (3b) and Story (SS) with Yoshida at DH… It can happen with minimal transactions!!
  6. Detroit does have Jace Jung for 3b, so I can see them stepping out. Toronto just can’t seem to get anyone to go there any more. They’re like the Topeka KS Tourism Bureau…
  7. They’ve demoted him in the past, partly due to poor outfield defense. If they can swap Arenado for a RF, maybe 3b is back in play? Did they move him to the OF because of poor hot corner defense, the presence of Arenado, or both?
  8. Really it comes down to do you prefer short term success from Bregman and live with the reduced production on the back nine? Or go get Arenado and jump right into the reduced production on the back nine?
  9. Is it that Japanese players prefer the west coast? Or that west coast teams prefer Japanese players more so than other teams. We’ve all send plenty of Japanese players sign elsewhere, often eschewing west coast alternatives…
  10. I only saw one objection to taking back Yoshida, made by some random individual who goes by harmony55. If Boston sent Yoshida, Abreu, and some cash, I’m not so sure St. Louis, whose RF tandem of Alex Burleson and Jordan Walker ranked among MLB’s worst defensive combinations at that position, I’m not as convinced St. Louis balks. They save nearly $20mill in the difference in the contracts, plus anything Boston includes, and they save whatever it would take to upgrade RF to a respectable defensive position. This deal would also likely break BTV in their favor. Sure they could hold out in favor of a deal in which a team sends back an even lesser contract, but if no such deal emerges and Boston moves on, St. Louis will be stuck paying the entirety of a deal on a player they openly tried to dump. Houston moved on quickly. Boston might as well.
  11. Nope. Cardinals plan to move him to 1b. He has no defense there to step down from…
  12. Hard pass. We have enough 1b/DH types already in camp. St. Louis didn’t want Contreras behind the plate anymore. Willson’s idea of “framing pitches” involves for some reason getting too close to the hitter. Last year, JD Martínez broke Willson’s arm by merely swinging. They’re not even attempting to put him back behind the plate; presumably he’s awful without moving too far forward. And they have a pair of better catchers that can frame a pitch without ending up in a cast…
  13. Slaten or Chapman? Minter fits into former LHP Breslow’s off-season plan to horde LHPs…
  14. Trade Rafaela for Suzuki? I know the Cubs don’t need outfielders, but an outfield featuring both Rafaela and Pete Crow-Armstrong would cover more ground than kudzu in Georgia. That team wouldn’t need a third outfielder. Anyone else out there would just get in the way. Is it legal to have five infielders? Or two DHs?
  15. I bet not. The Sox will almost definitely pay another player to play for another team. At some point, that action can improve the current team and pay for itself. It didn’t with Sale, but it did with Sandoval and Hanley…
  16. I’ll kick in the first $10…
  17. Whether he likes paying it or not, Henry has been in the ownership game long enough and with enough teams to know what comes with the job. And it’s not like it’s his money…
  18. I wonder what it was about those 2034 A’s and Rockies rosters that lead to that conclusion…
  19. The Cubs don’t need outfielders. Beyond Happ, PCA, Tucker, and Suzuki, they have BA Top 100 prospects Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcantara already on the 40 man roster, alongside unranked Alexander Canario. They might be willing to deal Suzuki, but it won’t be for Abreu. Most likely they’d want optionable pitching (Fitts?) or a Plan B at 3b, since they plan to start top prospects Matt Shaw, but have very little behind him with the current backup as Miles Mastrobuoni, whose basically a smaller, balder, lefty-hitting Romy González….
  20. That Zimmer incident is covered on the recently released Netflix docu-series “The Comeback” about the 2004 Red Sox…
  21. Romy didn’t come to Boston with much 1b experience at all, probably about the same amount as Refsnyder has. Refsnyder is a former infielder, coming up as a 2b in the Yankee system. Not sure if he moved around due to weak fielding or just to get on the field more or both. But as an emergency option at 1b, he could handle it. The Sox have been linked to Grichuk already this offseason, for what thats worth. But it’s more likely they keep Romy around, possibly even letting him DH vs LHP. I do think Bregman will be the Sox 2b this year, against my wishes. But if he isn’t, they probably start the year there with either Grissom or Campbell. I think Grissom has the slight edge by already being on the 40 man roster and finishing fairly strongly last season. But if he cannot handle the role, he still has an option left and Campbell has made enough noise to get the chance. Hamilton, if he isn’t traded, is probably limited to a bench role and his speed will come in handy as a pinch runner for ghosts…
  22. I would bet the Sox think they’ve already spent on a closer. To me, if it comes down to keeping Romy Gonzalez or one of the RHH corner OFs, what does Romy bring? I’d rather see a better 4th OF than another utility infielder. Especially if there is an injury in the OF. None of this blocks Anthony. They’ll find a way to get him involved…
