  1. 98 plate appearances spread across 8 seasons. It’s more coincidence at that point. He beat the tar out of the Sox in Boston last year. But was it because of Fenway? Or because he was hitting against Brad Keller and Brennan Bernardino? (Names not chosen randomly; Bregman homered off both of them.)
  2. Bregman won’t lead the Sox in OPS. He’d be an overpriced Connor Wong with the bat…
  3. Bregman is morphing into an above average hitter with topflight defensive skills. Adding him to get his bat in the lineup and hoping defense works out is misguided. Randal Grichuk drew ire on this forum, but his .875 OPS was better than Bergman’s, and also was carried by his season against LHP. Bregman is a good overall player. But he’s not the elite hitter he used to be, and he’s very unlikely to be that hitter again…
  4. Is the upgrade to Bergman’s .768 worth $200mill?
  5. Devers is an All Star, but solely because of his bat. He is among the worst defensive 3b in MLB using multiple metrics. Bregman is a gifted defensive 3b who probably is NOT a 4 fWAR second baseman. If the Sox sign him, move him to 3b, Devers to 1b, Casas (who fares similar to Devers on many defensive metrics) to DH, and Yoshida to Polar Park…
  6. He did acquire Danny Jansen, but then let him walk away. Jansen was perfect for this team. (Unless he was an incorrigible a-hole or something, and Breslow decided to cut bait.)
  7. First of all, the idea of moving the reigning AL Gold Glove winner at 3b to a new position to accommodate the worst defensive 3b in MLB seems flawed to me. And as big RHBs go, not sure what to make of Bregman. His OPS+ of 118 ranks him just ahead of Wilyer (114) on the Sox roster, and his oWAR of 3.5 ranks him just ahead of Connor Wong (2.7). And neither of these guys are big game-changing bats. In fact, both are guys many Sox fans want to replace. Couple that with Bregman struggling more against LHP the last two years, and I am not sure what he brings. I’d only want him as a defensive upgrade at 3b, and that scenario is unlikely…
  8. Between Story, Mayer, Hamilton, Grissom, and Campbell, I think we have a decent middle infield. Standing by catcher as the biggest need…
  9. Of course I want them to compete regularly, which is why I was annoyed with Bloom for white flagging two seasons when they were just a couple games out. I also understand that you can compete for a postseason spot and still miss out on the postseason.
  10. Would Houck be a better pitcher if he was 14-8? Of course not. Thats sort of the point. Sale dominated his way to the Triple Crown and his 18-3 record. But if you look at Shota Imanaga, he was 15-3 and not nearly as dominant despite similar W-L records. Hunter Greene was 9-5 and was pretty dominant on his own. But W-L record shows none of this…
  11. I think stop calling them “wins” and find another term. Or define a pitcher by QS rather than wins.
  12. You didn’t, but others have. I can argue W-L record is less revealing than any other stat, even in the case of Sale. If it isn’t the least reveling stat, what is? Sale was 18-3 because he was dominant. He wasn’t dominant because he was 18-3. Sure this ground has been covered, but it always starts with someone saying “I don’t like WAR because…” Also some pitchers might care about their W-L records. But some undoubtedly don’t, especially since MLB and BBWAA stopped using them to determine awards and teams stopped paying for them. Whether or not you think they do is irrelevant, and the reality is sweeping generalizations are incorrect more often than not…
  13. Is $18mill “high priced”?
  14. Don’t you live in San Francisco? Real big commitment from you there…
  15. Plenty of things go into many pitcher stats. But of all the pitching stats out there, none of them are less revealing about a pitcher than W-L record. If I asked everyone on this forum to get examples of this, we could all easily get a dozen unique ones. If I tried the same thing with ERA, would anyone be able to find a single example?
  16. My dad took me to Fenway to see some bad Red Sox teams. Maybe we should have just stayed home. Sure there was the familial bonding crap, but ultimately we were supporting a bad team!! The shame!
  17. Yeah I’m not sure who people want to spend on right now. Bullpen arms like Hoffman, Yates, Finnegan and Estevez do make sense. The catching market is bleak, but maybe Elias Diaz? Beyond that? Not sure. Bregman if he is playing 3b. I’m ok with that. Santander? Pass. His deal will outlive his usefulness. I like Profar but I get passing. They reportedly looked into Grichuk, hopefully as a weak side platoon with Abreu. That makes sense. I like Ramon Laureano better for that role, but Grichuk’s not bad. It does seem to me the easiest OF solution is Anthony in LF, Duran in CF, Abreu/Rafaela in RF. As of today, 30 of the MLBTR top 50 free agents remain unsigned. There are players out there…
  18. They’ve been mediocre the last few years. Bloom’s deadline indecisiveness tanked two seasons. Breslow was at least a buyer at the deadline, but a lot of things fell apart…
  19. Well you said billionaire owner puts a cheap product on the field, and thats Ricketts. I mean, the team has only won the World Series once since Teddy Roosevelt was president and the country only had 46 states. But folks flock to that park all the same…
  20. How much were tickets back then?
  21. So are you trying to discourage me from going to Cubs’ games?
  22. I’d question anyone who claimed to be an ardent fan who always knows what the team wants, and then says they rooted for the team “to lose to improve their draft position.” Draft position? In the MLB draft? Also - this is MLB. Mediocrity quite often does compete for playoff spots…
  23. One thing about wins, strikeouts and ERA is they all ignore the very important Innings Pitched stat. (ERA does use it in the formula, but your ERA doesn’t get better with more IP. In fact, very often the opposite.) A pitcher who can continually pitch and keep himself on the mound is a rare and very useful thing.,.
  24. Yoshida did play one inning in LF last year. Was that because Cora suspected a plague outbreak was imminent? And his first thought was “This is it!! It’s back!! Time for evasive action! Get Yoshida in the outfield NOW!!!” Maybe Cora got Yoshida out there in time and curtailed the plague. Maybe it was a false alarm. We may never know. But we are all still safe…
  25. No one asked you to be among them. But not everything baseball fan is a fan for the same reason. And expecting others to curtail their viewing practices to meet your needs is flat out wrong. Its something I expect from that Diehard Star Wars Nerd crowd my profession is loaded with who tell me I’m wrong for liking A Solo Story because “it wasn’t part of the original saga and just something Hollywood made for money.” Ok. I still found it entertaining. And I’m not wrong for liking it…
