  1. It also throws a big question mark into how ready to handle MLB pitching Duran really is…
  2. While potentially not a Sox target, I’d bet 29yo Noah Syndergaard does just fine in free agency…
  3. But Duran’s .766 road OPS (and .222 road BA) is a little less than inspiring
  4. Well any win for the Sox will be a walk off win now...
  5. Rule 5.07© already exists!! I don’t see the problem they are trying to create!
  6. Ok maybe I agree more here (in reference to his pace of play post on another thread)...
  7. I have never agreed with dgalehouse more...
  8. Well they acquired him for a lefty reliever with a career ERA of almost 10.00 and a fifth round pick with no MLB experience, so the historical price isn’t TOO high. A controllable former first rounder could have some value. Take, for example, Christian Arroyo. I can see the BTV valuations being reasonable...
  9. I’m going with trade. My best guess is to Miami for Dylan Floro, because 1) the Marlins are loaded with young arms but desperately need hitters 2) Floro does offer the Sox a good bullpen upgrade and has postseason experience with the Dodgers and 3) it works out in BTV...
  10. One of the reasons might rhyme with Justin Pedroia...
  11. There is a delicate balance. For a lot of players, arb money in their final year is higher than the AAV of free agency, especially if they are over 30. This benefits a team in terms of years (since it’s one) but for some teams it can force decisions to be made. While it’s not likely a 4th arb year could prevent the Sox from, say, extending Devers, it’s not a ridiculous postulate that it might limit them to signing a lesser relief pitcher or closer. Most teams prefer not to hamstring themselves as opposed to more financial flexibility. Even Boston...
  12. Hey, I’m still on board with Kike leading off. Although my logic probably differs from most people’s...
  13. It is and has been since 1934 when Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes retired, as he was the last player legally allowed to doctor the baseball. Yes, he actually had his own rules. But, much like this, cheating across MLB is usually not limited to one or two teams. The Astros’ scandal took the headlines because they won, and the Sox Apple Watch scandal/Yankee bullpen phone scandal. But other teams were also accused with a lot less noise, like the Blue Jays “Man in White” sign stealing scandal. Not everything we hear is true, of course. But the winners and bigger names grab more headlines...
  14. Maybe Duran’s path to MLB would have been faster had he stayed at 2b...
  15. No, but they are cheaper free agents at 31 than at 27...
  16. Translation: “They caught a Yankee!”
  17. With Duran, he still has less than 100 PA in AAA and flopped in 350 PA in AA. Those are probably bigger factors than his control and arb...
  18. I’m predicting Chavis has less than 2 months left in the Sox organization...
  19. I don’t think teams worry about the extra year of control for a 24 or 25 year old player as much as a 21 or 22 year old. Losing a player to free agency at 31 is vastly different than losing one to free agency at age 27. The extra year of arbitration is a much, much bigger deal, especially if a team is pushing a budget limit...
  20. I think you mean religion...
  21. And who do the Sox turn to if Duran doesn’t dazzle in his first 102 plate appearances?
  22. Brandon Brennan or Marcus Wilson? I’m taking action...
  23. While a lot of talking heads praising the Jays for their Legacy Infield prospects, the Astros were quietly developing some serious quality arms...
  24. It might have been an overpay, but most free agent pitchers are typically older than Porcello was at the time. Had he hit free agency, he would likely have topped that offer. (Injured List mainstay Nate Eovaldi received only a slightly lesser deal 2 years later). You might not like his 4.50 ERA, but there is more to pitching than ERA. Add to that his Cy Young season and that deal was absolutely one of Ben’s better ones if not his best...
  25. And it’s quite possible Cordero gets another shot before Duran...
