  1. As a child, we all played "telephone" or whatever you called that game where the same message was relayed from person to person and changed along the way, sometimes drastically. ..
  2. It's a concern any time a pitcher's pitching arm hurts, regardless of whether or not it puts them on the DL that day. Even if Price pitches all season, will he be the same with discomfort that isn't a tear?
  3. It doesn't guarantee him a roster spot, but it has protections for his contract. Not necessarily to the full amount, however...
  4. If Abad got injured playing pick up basketball or riding a motorcycle or doing some other contractually prohibited activity, that would be a lack of accountability on his part. But if he gets injured playing baseball in an MLB-sanctioned tournament, that's not the same thing. It's just bad (or good, if you don't like Abad much) luck. Clearly Dombrowski has some sort of positive opinion of the guy, as he traded for him and then offered him arbitration. If Abad does get released, it's more likely related to his pitching and how it changed that opinion...
  5. If Travis winds up as a weak side platoon hitter who is paired with the fairly mediocre Mitch Moreland, he isn't much of a prospect. I'm hoping he can push Moreland to the bench altogether. ..
  6. The best aspect of the Sox farm system is that with the starting lineup containing Benintendi, Betts, Bradley, and Bogaerts (and possibly Swihart), that's several positions they hopefully won't need to rely on it to fill for a few seasons. The worst aspect is the dearth of pitching. If Groome doesn't pan out for either effectiveness or injury, who's really the most likely impact pitcher? The Sox farm could be considered terrific, but the best players are already in MLB...
  7. Cecchini was traded after bring DFAd. At that point even getting cash for him was an accomplishment. Not sure why Dombrowski didn't like Cecchini but for some reason kept Brentz. ..
  8. Honestly, it's not the given it looks like. You really need a headliner type prospect to get an ace, and Espinoza doesn't seem to be considered one universally. So the entire deal rests on the opinions of Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams about Anderson Espinoza. ...
  9. Coyle and Cecchini weren't traded. While I do agree Dombrowski has been an aggressive trader, releasing players who haven't kept themselves relevant isn't the same thing...
  10. You inviting us all over to watch?
  11. My exact thoughts. People are so quick to believe in conspiracies when it's not their team/guy...
  12. Ah the token contrarian prediction. A writer trying to look brighter thsn his colleagues by going against the grain, which is so easy to do in baseball given the tight ranges in winning percentages across league. ..
  13. I say give Price extended spring training or whatever. Keep his innings down this year to may be 170-180. Then if he can still stay healthy, maybe he won't pitch so poorly in the post-season. ..
  14. I cut Pierzynski some slack. When he was with the White Sox, he used to do alot of radio out here in Chicago. I found him to be very informative and pleasant on the radio. Even the talk show hosts were surprised, given his reputation that preceded him out here. His insights into clubhouse behavior were as candid as anyone I ever heard. But then he left and his name became mud again...
  15. Price may not have signed any deal with the Lackey clause. And really, the Sox might not want Price for his age 37 season, even at minimum wage. ..
  16. It's not like I know him personally, but for some reason the stories that follow Lawrie from team to team always describe his massive arrogance and poor attitude. He hasn't helped himself with his occasional on field tantrum, including an infamous helmet-throwing incident a couple years ago. I always suspected he was the teammate who complained about Adam LaRoche's son last spring training. I'll never be able to prove it, however. (And certainly, I could be flat out wrong.) Of course all of this could just be a poor portrayal in the media. He might be the nicest guy who, when not slamming his batting helmet to the ground, spends his off hours making Linus blankets for orphans. But probably not...
  17. ????????????????????? I know it's moot now, but the solution to shoring up the Sox pitching staff would never have been to trade the remaining pieces away. And in this case, whatever pluses Quintana brought would have been immediately negated by the minuses from the replacements for ERod and Wright...
  18. Absolutely. Quintana's contract makes him as valuable or more valuable than Sale, and the White Sox preferred Benintendi over Moncada. ..
  19. The thought of blaming the Price situation (if it had been) on Cherington was always kind of silly. Sure extending Lester might have precluded the need to sign Price, but Lester's future health was just as unknown. It's not like the choices would have been Lester or one of Brett Anderson or Jarrod Parker. And the Sox wouldn't be better off with Lester out for the year instead...
  20. No kidding. In a sport where the best teams win 60% of the time and the worst teams win 40% percent of the time, losing an elite pitcher can be a BIG deal. I do disagree that the Sox bullpen scares me. I think it could be good and the addition of Sale should reduce the workload from it...
  21. Shut Price down until mid-May at the earliest.
  22. Lawrie, who is far from fat, would join exactly 0 players released by other teams on the Red Sox roster. He would probably make excellent Sandoval insurance/platoon partner and could replace Josh Rutledge on the roster, except for the reputation Brett Lawrie carries for being a completely insufferable human being...
  23. And you see it exactly how Boudreaux wanted Ted Williams to see it. But really, the effect wad supposed to be psychological. Read up on it. One extra fielder on half of a huge baseball field does make a difference, but forcing a player to hit the ball elewhere as opposed to simply letting him play makes for a much bigger difference. ......
  24. I said that same thing about the Cardinals when Adam Wainwright went down for TJ surgery one March...
  25. Hmmmm... get a good starter who makes less than Buchholz? For who? The farm doesn't have the depth it once had. The Sox should have kept Buchholz. Now they're going to have to trade away Devers and/or Travis and/or Groome in order to get a pitcher who MIGHT be as good as Clay was... ..
