  1. Possibly. We'll never know. At the same time, we could just as easily ask if the Sox would have won the game if they scored 5 runs. Or even 2 runs, which likely would have meant not going to extra innings.
  2. No kidding. Who knew there were so many Cy Youngs out there?
  3. His 2021 xBA was .194, so not as wide a gap between actual BA and xBA last year.
  4. Stop. No one has made any excuses for why he isn't hitting.
  5. No, I'm not saying that at all. Story playing 2B is not the problem. I was just commenting on a post about Arroyo and Story.
  6. Despite the blown saves, pitching has not been the problem.
  7. A man after my own heart. The outcome of close games really has more to do with random factors or luck than it has to do with skill. We've been on the wrong end of that so far. And I don't have to point out to you that last night's loss came on another defensive miscue.
  8. I just posted in the other thread that my choice would still be to have Story at SS and Bogaerts at 2B. With that being said, Cora knows what he is doing, and if he feels the current alignment is the best one to go with, then it's probably the best one to go with.
  9. Story's bat looks like it's starting to come around. And I still think he should be playing SS with Xander at 2B. I acknowledge that there is a lot more that goes into that decision that I am not privy to, but on the surface, I'd have Story at SS.
  10. As a math teacher, I live on that soup.
  11. If the offense continues to struggle, I would not be surprised to see Duran up sooner rather than later. I agree that he could provide a spark. That said, I am one who is always preaching patience. I would not make any big moves based on 3 weeks. Let's get JD healthy and back in the line up every day. Hopefully the other bats will come around soon. Again, IMO, JBJ is not the problem. It's the other guys.
  12. The final results also never tell the whole story about how well or poorly a player is doing. There is a lot of luck in the game of baseball. A LOT. JBJ is not a great hitter, but he's certainly better than the .156 BA. His xBA, based on exit velocity and launch angle, is .226. Again, not great, but good enough to hide in the #9 spot if the rest of the offense is performing. JBJ's bat is not the problem. It's the other 8 guys in the line up that are the problem.
  13. The Sox have six 1-run losses, two 2-run losses, and one 3-run loss. They are also 0-4 in extra inning games. It's not like the Sox are being pummeled in their losses (though to be fair, they're also not pummeling their opponents in their wins). The point is, as heartbreaking as these late and close losses are to take, they bode better for the team going forward than 5+ run losses would. The offense will come around.
  14. It's not the excuse for why the Red Sox are playing so poorly. It is a significant part of why the Yankees are playing so well right now.
  15. Hill's performance inspires some confidence. The offense is still as frustrating as ever. We will take the wins any way we can get them.
  16. The 9th inning was a lot more tense than it had any business being.
  17. That seems to be their trend. One inning of scoring 2-3 runs, then zip.
  18. Fair point.
  19. It is not unreasonable to think Jackie can return to at least 2019 numbers. His BABIP is still incredibly low, and his "expected" stats put him right in line with 2019 numbers. Not great, but better than where he is now. That said, I am still surprised that the Sox did not acquire another outfielder who bats right handed. That said, the expectation was that the rest of the offense would be hitting well enough to carry JBJ in the 9 hole. It's kind of hard to cover JBJ when most of the rest of the offense is hitting as poorly as they are.
  20. Yes, that's the reasoning we've heard, and it makes sense. But it would also make sense to put Story at SS when Bogaert does not play.
  21. I am wondering if Cora's seeming unwillingness to play Story at SS has more to do with allowing Story to focus solely on playing 2B or with not wanting to create any kind of shortstop "controversy".
  22. The good news with the offense is that they have been hitting the ball hard and running into some tough luck. They are still chasing pitches, but they should start producing runs like we know they are capable of doing. I'm with you on defense. IMO, it is far too often underrated.
  23. Rich Hill looked very good last night. His ERA is now 3.71 with an xERA of 3.69. However, his FIP and xFIP are 4.57 and 5.19, respectively. I was surprised Cora pulled him as quickly as he did, but there might be something to the Hill/Houck or Hill/Whitlock piggyback.
  24. It's called strength of schedule. Or lack thereof.
