  1. He'll likely get a 4-year deal from some team. He's 32 years old now, so for me, it would be hard to give him more than 3 years. When he signed his current contract, I thought it might be a year too long.
  2. I agree that Bloom probably values defense more than many fans do. I'm still not convinced that the offer was accurate, but maybe. Regardless of Bogey's poor defense, I think the offer, if true, is a slap in the face. I am wondering what impact, if any, Bogey's seeming unwillingness to move off of SS has on negotiations with him. In an interview before Story was signed, when asked about the possibility of changing positions, Bogey's response was "I'm a shortstop", when it should have been "I'll do whatever the team needs me to do."
  3. Oh I agree with you. There are other starts that I would consider a quality start. In the past, I think a large part of it was that the starter went at least 6 innings. That's not so much the case anymore.
  4. And the overall value of the contract is less than what Story received. I'm sure that didn't sit well with Bogaerts.
  5. The criteria for a quality start does seem rather arbitrary. That said, I never had an issue with the 4.50 ERA not being "quality". Any starting pitcher who pitches 6 innings and holds the opponent to 3 runs or fewer had done a solid job.
  6. Yes, it does. BR's version of Game Score also awards extra points for innings completed after the 4th.
  7. Mazz did a good job in the booth, IMO.
  8. It bothered me a bit that Verdugo did not run hard out of the box on that grounder. Might he have beaten the throw if he were running hard? We'll never know.
  9. Boone giveth, and Boone taketh away.
  10. What about we just go with Game Score and forget about quality starts?
  11. This is exactly what I'm talking about.
  12. If a player is expecting a long term extension prior to free agency, then by all means, he should be expected to give a home team discount.
  13. I think the Story signing made sense. I thought Suzuki made more sense, but there are a lot of factors beyond what I know that I'm sure were considered. Xander took a discount with his first extension. For that, I'd be willing to pay him a little more than I would otherwise be willing to pay him. I wouldn't do $30M/8 though.
  14. Players almost always go after the most money with little regard to any other factors. I wish this weren't the case, but it's fact.
  15. It's something we count on.
  16. The Coors effect typically disappears once a player moves away from that ballpark.
  17. I tend to be on the lower end of what most people consider reasonable when it comes to contracts.
  18. If the Sox are out of contention and he has the chance to go to a playoff bound team, he would likely jump at the chance. If the Sox are in contention, I don't think they would want to trade him in the first place.
  19. I get it. I don't agree with going that long on a contract, but I get wanting to keep a player like Devers on the team. I really hope that he and the Sox can work something out.
  20. It depends on what kind of deal Bogaerts is looking for. If he's looking for 6 or 7 years at $30M per, then it's the right decision to let him walk. As is the case with Mookie, most of us will quickly be over the fact that he left. As Bell said, as long as the team keeps winning.
  21. It's possible, but I don't think the prospects were throw ins. I think getting the prospects was the impetus of the trade.
  22. Like you, the more I thought about it, the more I liked the deal. Yes, the recency effect often does play a big part in our reactions.
  23. I don't think that's going to be the case with Devers, but you never know. Maybe he injures his wrist and is never quite the same hitter after that. There is a lot of risk involved with that type of contract.
