  1. No matter what the manager does, ultimately, the players have to perform. IMO, the way a manager handles the clubhouse is much more important than his in-game decisions.
  2. It's not good when I go into a game expecting to lose. I try to stay hopeful, but like I said before, this team has worn me down.
  3. You're right, it's very easy to second guess. You're also right that a manager has a lot more to consider when making decisions than just what seems obvious to fans. The fans aren't even aware of some of the things a manager takes into account when making a decision. We also need to remember that just because a decision resulted in a bad outcome, it doesn't mean that it was the wrong decision. And vice versa. All that said, most dugout decisions have little effect on the outcome of the game. People tend to give too much credit and too much blame to the manager.
  4. Yeah, it's ridiculous. Who even comes up with this stuff? Not quite as ridiculous but not far behind is Papelbon once being charged with a blown save when he came into a game with bases loaded and no outs, and all he gave up was a sac fly.
  5. I hear you. It would be nice, though, if our offense would give our bullpen a little more cushion more often. Maybe we wouldn't have so many blown games.
  6. I feel for the guy. He's had a rough go of it the past two years, plus I think he gets an unwarranted bad rap for his quirkiness. I wish him a quick recovery, and I hope he is our starting first baseman next year.
  7. LOL about Campbell. He started off so good. Hopefully, he'll get it back soon. I understand how upsetting and frustrating it is. We have too many players scuffling at the same time. It's hard to win games when you can't score runs.
  8. How Saves and Blown Saves are awarded is just as ridiculous. Even with the typical Save in which a reliever comes into the 9th inning with a lead of 3 runs or less, there is a big difference between a 3-run save and a 1-run save.
  9. I typically look at ERA first as well.
  10. I hate to say that any stat is meaningless, but IMO, a pitcher's W-L record is up there on the list of stats that don't tell you very much. There are so many better stats that can be used to evaluate a pitcher's performance these days. That said, looking at the number of Wins a pitcher has does have some value. If you show me a 20-win pitcher, though few and far between, I'd feel pretty comfortable in saying that he's a pretty good starter, without looking at any other stats. For instance, the two 18-win pitchers last year were Chris Sale and Tarik Skubal.
  11. I know his hitting has been abysmal. I keep hoping for signs, like yesterday's game, that he's coming out of it. I don't expect him to hit like he did at the beginning of the season, but I certainly think he's capable of producing significantly better than what he's done for most of May.
  12. Having a starter pulled after 4.2 innings seemed to always hurt my fantasy teams. LOL It isn't just Cora who's doing it. You are right about the manager being second guessed about pitching changes. Regardless of the decision, leave a pitcher in or take him out, if the outcome is not favorable, Cora will be blamed or second guessed. It's fair to second guess. I don't think it's fair to lay blame.
  13. I know they haven't been very good, and I understand the 3rd time through the order business. I just feel like there were times when any of these guys were pitching well enough with a low enough pitch count to be left in for 1 or 2 more outs. I was just reading your point in the other thread about the LOOGY coming in for 1 out to finish the inning, which makes a lot of sense. That would account for some of it.
  14. I was very surprised that Crochet came back out for the 7th inning yesterday. I wonder why Cora allows Crochet to go 100+ pitches deep, but will pull his other starters when they are pitching relatively well with a pitch count of 75-80 pitches, especially when the BP could use a breather. I know Crochet is a much better pitcher than the others, but still. Let them at least finish 5 innings.
  15. I don't know if the pitch clock is a factor in injuries or not (studies have shown no causal relationship), but I am and have always been against the pitch clock. I like the cat and mouse games that go on between the pitcher and the batter. I admit, the shorter game times are good for my bed time, but I'd be just as happy going back to those 3 hour plus games.
  16. My thoughts on various points I've read in this thread: 1. One-run games happen in so many ways. Something as simple as a missed strike/ball call can affect the outcome of a 1-run game. In close games, randomness overwhelms skill. 2. Non-egregious changes in the batting order, for instance switching the #3 and #6 hitters, have little impact on run production. 3. A manager's in-game decisions have very little impact on the outcome of a game.
  17. I am still riding the Trevor Story bandwagon. It's awfully lonely on this ride.
  18. I know we have to be patient with him, but I have not been impressed with Marcelo at all. Show me what all the fuss is about.
  19. He didn't have his best command, yet managed to get through 7 innings of 1-run ball. That's an ace for you. I love the comments by the Braves announcers about how Cora had to kick Crochet out of his house after a team get together because Crochet (last one to leave) just wanted to stay and talk baseball with Cora.
  20. Truth be told, I would watch the game if I had access to it. But it does say a lot that I'm not really upset about not being able to watch it. Regarding the Bruins, I guess it's a good thing that I'm not a hockey fan.
  21. Honestly, I don't know what the answer is. That's why they pay Breslow and others the big bucks. A few thoughts: 1. Going into the season, I thought this team was constructed well for playoff contention. Outside of not having a good back up plan for Casas, the FO did its job this offseason, IMO. 2. I get attached to Red Sox players and hate to see anyone traded or DFA'd. I also have this fear of giving up on players too soon. I'm going to probably be the last one to give up on guys like Story. 3. With many of these players, it's still a small sample size to be basing big decisions off of. Yes, Casas gets another shot at being our long-term first baseman.
  22. It would be difficult to find a good first baseman at this point in the season. The Red Sox really messed up by not securing better back-up plans for 1B and 3B during the offseason. There's a lot of truth in the idea that a team's success in getting to the playoffs is often impacted more by how well the depth players can fill in when the starters inevitably go down due to injuries than it is by the projected starting players.
