It's an incredible amount. How much better of a deal can he realistically get if he opts out, considering his recent injury? -
Were there any teams that came back from an 0-3 deficit in the ALCS to win a WS before the Red Sox did it? The defense rests.

It's not over by a long shot. A lot can and does happen in a matter of a couple of weeks. We've witnessed that in both directions just recently with a pretty good run followed up by a pretty bad run. Keep the faith.

As I just posted, I can't believe this team is playing as poorly as we've played. There have been so many disappointments and a lot of frustration. I am trying to find ways to stay optimistic, but it does get harder with each series that we lose.

I'm with you. I still have a hard time believing this team has played as poorly, or inconsistently, as it has. Maybe this is the year that we hit our stride after the All-Star break instead of getting worse. One can hope, anyway. We now have 4 teams we have to pass in order to get into the wildcard, but the good news is that we have a better run differential than 3 of those teams. Maybe our luck will even out.

Yes, I think that trading Devers was the turning point for the majority of fans. It's hard to be optimistic after our recent stretch of play. With the beginning of each new game, I remain hopeful, until we lose. LOL

I would prefer not extend Bregman for any longer than his current deal, though I understand there's a good chance that he'll opt out otherwise. With that being said, the Sox could use some positive news on how they 'repurpose' some of that money, and Bregman is the type of player that is not only good on the field, but great in the clubhouse. We need some veteran leadership. I'm guessing I wouldn't be thrilled with the terms of an extension, but I'd be happy to keep him around longer.

I agree that Breslow deserves more time. IMO, part of the problem has been the quick turnover of GMs or CBOs or whatever you want to call them. It takes time to allow plans to come to fruition, unless you're Dombrowski and you're given the green light on winning now at any cost. But Dombrowski wouldn't have been able to do that without the time put in by Cherington and even Theo. And Dombrowski was fired too after only a short stint. I've said it before, I think Henry needs to have more patience in whatever team building philosophy strikes him when he hires a GM.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming our team struggles this year on injuries. As you said, all teams deal with injuries, some far worse than what we've dealt with. I just thought our rotation this year would be better than it has been, and some of that is due to injury setbacks. That's an interesting take on having an elite lineup along with 15 #4 pitchers. I tend to disagree with that, but at the same time, I don't want to have a rotation of all #1 and #2 pitchers and a light hitting lineup. My preference would be to have a top pitching staff and an average lineup as opposed to the other way around.

He also has to manage the marathon. Fans want Cora to go all out for the win every game, and realistically, he just can't do that. In September, yes. In June, no.

I have no problems with Cora resting players. One thing that always frustrates me, however, is that Cora has a tendency to rest 2-3 of his best players on the same day, often times on a Sunday. It's hard to watch a lineup with 3 bench players in it. This might not be as true at the moment, because sometimes, besides Story, I'm not even sure who our infield 'starters' are.

Except for 2 games in the Angels series, we've been up against some pretty good starting pitching since we traded Devers. Give some credit to good pitching by the opposition. That's not to say that we don't need some help getting our offense going, but we've been in offensive ruts like this when Devers was on the team. I'm not sure our record would be that much different with Devers. Momentum? Not at all a believer in its predictive ability. -
I love having Bregman on the team, and I hope he decides not to opt out. However, he is 31 years old. While he's currently still playing at a high level, I'm not sure how wise an extension would be. For me, the saving grace of his current contract is that it is only for 3 years. I don't want to turn that into anything longer.

Breslow addressed what most considered to be our biggest needs this offseason, and he wasn't exactly cheap about it. He did his job this offseason, outside of the lack of communication issues. Needless to say, a lot has happened since the season started, but I think most people thought this would be a very competitive team. Not that we're out of it, but most thought we'd be a decent number of games over .500 rather than hovering right at .500.

For whatever reason, we seem to have had some terrible luck in drafting and developing top of the rotation starters. For the first time in a long time, I actually felt pretty good about the group of young MLB level starters in our system, not to be aces, but to be solid contributors to our rotation. They haven't panned out, largely due to injury.

I was really hoping Pivetta would be back, though I'm guessing I was probably in the minority there. Yeah, who in their wildest imagination would have guessed that Toro, Narvaez, and Romy would be batting in the middle of our lineup.

Fair enough that the talent has to be there. Then perhaps the question should be why we can't draft pitchers like him? If I'm not mistaken, he was not a high draft pick.

Maybe Breslow will shock the world (again) with a pitching acquisition blockbuster at the deadline. We know he has it in him to do something bold.

I love this post, Max. Thank you for your optimism. Count me in. It's been a frustrating few years, for sure. Every time the team goes on a nice little run, they tend to follow it up with an equally bad run. :( Baseball is such a funny game. As you've mentioned, there is good reason to be hopeful. With just over 1/2 the season left to play, it is far too early to throw in the towel. A lot can happen in just the span of one week.

In the MLB rulebook, under the definition of "Errors", the phrase "judgment call" or something similar is used repeatedly. That can't be good. And what about mental errors, such as a pitcher not covering first base? That's clearly an error, but not counted as one.

I will say, however, that having sure hands, even with a lack of range, probably is more of a psychological boost to pitchers, teammates, and fans. Or perhaps I should say that having unsteady hands is probably more or of a let down to pitchers, teammates, and fans than having lack of range. Booting a ball hit right to you and allowing a run to score that shouldn't have scored is very noticeable, and can be demoralizing. OTOH, missing a ball due to lack of range and allowing a run to score that shouldn't have scored isn't always obvious. Both cost the team in the same way though.

When I am attempting to assess a player's or team's defensive ability, the idea of looking at errors or fielding percentage doesn't even cross my mind. It's long been DRS, UZR or UZR/150, and more recently, OAA as well. The advanced metrics are not perfect, but they are head and shoulders above traditional defensive stats.

It's too bad that we have been so unsuccessful in developing our young pitchers into top rotation guys. Pitching is so expensive and a hard commodity to come by. Why can't we develop our own Tarik Skubal? The cost of getting a #2 pitcher may be prohibitive for the Red Sox.

It's not as simple as that. There are several other factors in play. Do you know how bad our 2nd base defense has been? That said, the decision, one way or another, should have never been an issue to begin with.
