  1. I would really like to see him back next year. I think he's a great influence on the young guys. That said, I wouldn't give him more than one additional year.
  2. The best part about Bregman's current contract is that it is only for 3 years. As much as I want him back, extending him for 4 or 5 years would be a mistake, IMO. I cannot speak highly enough about Bregman's leadership on this team, and how important I think he is for our young core. I really hope that the Red Sox and Bregman can work out something creative to keep him on the team (one additional year?) without an outrageously long extension.
  3. Yeah, we can't get ahead of ourselves. We need to take care of business against the As first. As they say, one game at a time. How nice it is to be playing meaningful baseball in September.
  4. If the Red Sox have another collapse like that, I might have to retire from baseball fandom.
  5. I agree with everything you posted here. It would be really nice to overtake the Yankees and the Blue Jays. Tough task, but not impossible.
  6. Of course I would love to move ahead of the Yankees and the Blue Jays, but the most important number right now is the 5-game lead we have over Texas to stay in the playoffs. With 18 games remaining, if we play .500 ball, that would give us 88 wins. Texas would have to win 14 of 18 games to tie, in which case they would have the advantage because of the head to head record against us. The Red Sox are in pretty good shape. That said, stranger things have happened. Please Red Sox, no September collapse.
  7. Great article Maddie. Thanks for the legwork and the analysis. You can bet that teams are leaning on their analytics departments to provide them with this type of insight.
  8. I happen to like Breslow and Cherington, not to mention Bloom.
  9. Devers has heated up, which is not surprising. I don't think anyone doubted that he would hit. Consequently, the Giants have been winning more games. Good for them. All that said, you are not going to convince me, even if we disregard that monstrous contract, that trading Devers was a bad idea. The Red Sox playing well since trading Devers is about more than just the promotion of Anthony, IMO.
  10. Winning the division is still not out of the question, especially since we have 3 games remaining with the Yankees and 3 games remaining with the Jays. If I'm being honest, I don't think it will happen, but it's not out of the question. That said, I'm not that concerned about whether we secure home field advantage. Just get into the playoffs.
  11. I am so old school when it comes to things like this. I have had a difficult time going paperless. I'm getting there, but it's been a slow process. I function better with a paper copy in front of me. E-books? Forget about it!
  12. This game, on paper, really had no business being the nail biter that it was. Thank goodness the Red Sox came out on top. Let's go!
  13. We were a little lucky to sweep the Baltimore series, but I'm not complaining. We deserve some good breaks finally going our way.
  14. I really wasn't thrilled about the Chapman signing, but I can't argue with how good he's been. Lights out and very little 9th inning drama.
  15. Like everyone else, I'm surprised to hear this. I thought he'd be given a longer chance in the pen. I guess it came down to a roster crunch. Unlike everyone else, I'm not so eager to get rid of Yoshida. That said, it's hard to defend his performance thus far.
  16. Ideally, both sides would pick up the mutual option, but with the way Gio is pitching, it's unlikely that he would do so. Hopefully, the two sides can work out an extension before Gio hits free agency. I don't think Gio is out for the most money, and I think he'd like to stay in Boston. Make a fair and respectable offer, and I think Gio would accept. Malcolm's post suggesting 4/$85M sounds reasonable, though my preference would be a contract for 3 years.
  17. There might be some other reasons for the drop, but two plays can skew the data significantly.
  18. I don't disagree that shortstops typically get more chances than an outfielder. Even so, a couple of bad plays can skew defensive metrics significantly. I'm just going by everything I've read on the subject.
  19. If the team is winning, the fans will come. It's not about having the superstar players like Ohtani. It's about winning.
  20. It really annoys me that the players won't listen to what I'm yelling at them.
  21. First of all, let me tell you again how impressed and happy I am to hear that you and your fellow octogenarians are still playing softball. As far as the 600 ABs to determine the type of hitter a player will turn into, that sounds like a fair number overall. Different offensive stats require different samples sizes to "stabilize", some of which are larger than 600 ABs, others of which are smaller than 600 ABs. Per Fangraphs, here are the stabilization points for some offensive statistics. Note that some are given in ABs and others are given in PAs. BA - 910 ABs OBP - 460 PAs SLG - 320 ABs K rate - 60 PAs Walk rate - 120 PAs
  22. I would have to disagree. Defensive metrics are very unreliable in small sample sizes. Because there are so few defensive chances in a season (as opposed to offensive chances), one or two bad plays can greatly skew the overall rating.
  23. Exactly. The sac bunt isn't nearly as important as managers once thought it was, but the ability to lay down a good bunt still has its place in baseball.
  24. I am not a fan of the sacrifice bunt, except under very rare specific circumstances. However, bunting for a base hit is another story. David Hamilton would be a perfect candidate to drop down a bunt for a base hit. With his speed and base-stealing threat, a bunt single would be as good as a double. There are a few others on the team who should also try it once in a while.
  25. If I had to pick one team for the Red Sox to dominate, it would be the Yankees.
