  1. Perhaps. In a perfect world, I'd keep Rafaela in CF. In the less than perfect situation that we're in, I don't mind having him at second base.
  2. Fair point about the guys we remember versus the guys we don't. I, too, very much like Sutter's response.
  3. There is no situation in which giving up an out to advance the runners yields more runs, on average. There is also no situation in which intentionally walking a batter yields less runs. However, the chance of scoring one run does increase with a sac bunt provided that there is a runner on 2nd with no outs or runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. With all of that said, the decision to sac bunt or not depends a lot on who is up and who is on deck.
  4. I never wish injury on a player. There's no point in holding ill will after a player leaves. That said, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
  5. I don't dispute that fact. At the same time, it seems like the strengthening and conditioning of the arm/shoulder should be improved to offset some of the added stress on the arm/shoulder.
  6. I can fully understand why managers are overly cautious with their players. I just really miss the days of starters pitching 7+ innings on a regular basis. I know that the 3rd time through the order thing has a lot to do with that.
  7. Not that I'm condoning it, but maybe 2nd base is something that Breslow is looking at? How long will Mayer be out? At least with Rafaela playing 2nd, that clears up our outfield logjam. I'm actually fine with the offense that we have. Again, they can be extremely frustrating at times, but I think the talent is there. As you said, a 1B to platoon with Romy should about cover it.
  8. The walks in last night's game are unacceptable, especially to the #9 hitter. We were lucky to survive that game. Yes, the gods have been turning more in our favor, as we've been winning more of those 1-run games. I'm okay with going 4-5 against those 3 teams we just played. It could have been better, but it also could have been a lot worse.
  9. Which leads to the oft-asked question of why. Is it because they are trying to throw harder and trying to increase their spin rates? Or is it because managers are being too cautious with them? These days, pitchers are taken out of a game at the first sign of discomfort, probably rightly so. I can't help but wonder, however, if pitchers in the past played through that kind of discomfort and came out no worse for wear.
  10. I like your quick, but sensible, opinions. I am in 100% agreement here.
  11. Agree on the LH first baseman platoon. Back up catcher is just not a priority for me. I'd like to get a #2 or #3 starting pitcher and a back end reliever. While this offense can be extremely maddening at times, I feel like they have the talent to take us to the postseason.
  12. I blame it on the participation trophies, of which my kids received several. LOL I know it's hard to compare today's players with players from the past, but I do think that current players are "babied" more than players from the past, not that they're necessarily softer. Just look at starting pitchers.
  13. I often feel like that Drew. There are many, many games in which I'm more frustrated with the offense than I am with the pitching.
  14. Interestingly enough, the road team has the better overall record in extra-inning games since the inception of the ghost runner. If the road team can score one run in the top of the inning, they have a good chance of winning the game because the strategy for both teams then chances substantially. I'm usually not a fan of sacrifice bunts, but depending on who is up and who is on deck, this situation would be a good time for it. Of course, if the sac bunt is successful, we'd still have to find a way to get the runner home from third base. The inability of our lineup to, at minimum, make a productive out is maddening.
  15. Agree with the second part of your sentence. Can't agree with the first part. And because Devers is on the team, I hope the Giants don't win any championships.
  16. The Giants have scored 18 runs in two games since Raffy became a part-time first baseman. And Raffy has been on fire in those two games. The Giants have figured out the secret sauce.
  17. Fair points. I still think there is a lot of stress on the players and their families dealing with the rumors and the possible subsequent trades.
  18. I would hate to see Duran or Abreu get traded, but I understand that it might be necessary in order to acquire the pitching we need. I would be able to come to terms with that as long as we received equal value in return. What I don't want to see happen is trading away one of those guys for little value just because we have a surplus of outfielders.
  19. This annoys me. You would think that Devers would have jumped at the chance to play the field again when first base became available. He chose to "punish" the Red Sox instead by refusing to do so.
  20. We 100% agree on long term contracts. Most players are already in decline in their early 30s. Signing a player into their late 30s or even early 40s is a mistake, IMO. I would not have given Devers that extension. I was happy to have him remain on the Red Sox at that time, but I wouldn't have given him that contract. I'm not sure that we'll see Devers play the field very often. As you noted, he's not been a good defender, though to be fair, he might be able to play a respectable first base. I'm afraid injuries will keep him off the field defensively.
  21. We have faced some really good pitching since the All-Star break. It's nice to think that good hitters should be able to get to those pitchers, but there's a reason why those pitchers are so good.
  22. I don't follow basketball closely enough, but that makes sense. When games end in a score that is so close, there is luck involved in who wins the game. In baseball, something as simple as a missed strike or ball call can make the difference in a 1-run game.
  23. The outcome of one-run games is mostly due to randomness, not skill or talent. IMO, there really isn't anyone who deserves blame for the loss. The Red Sox outhit the Phillies by one hit. The 16 Ks by the Red Sox hitters might be a problem, however.
  24. Those late-inning and extra-inning losses are always the toughest to take, especially when it's a 1-run loss, but as you pointed out, there are many positives to take away from that game. I figured the Phillies would win that game by a fairly wide margin. That we played them so closely is a good sign. I'm still upset that we lost though.
  25. All of the speculation and rumors about our players being traded are hard for me to deal with as a fan. I can't imagine what it must be like for the players, especially Duran right now. You always hear about how baseball is a business and it comes with the territory, but on the personal side, being traded does uproot your family. They say moving is one of the most stressful things in life.
