  1. I am now a firm believer that the "Braves Model" is the one to follow. Not too long ago, I was firmly against locking up any player who was still under team control. Why pay big bucks for them when you still have them under control for relatively little? Since free agent contracts have skyrocketed to beyond sane levels, I think it's almost a must to lock these guys up early. If it were up to me, I'd lock up Mayer, Abreu, and Narvaez as well. It doesn't have to be this year, and it doesn't have to be as large a contract as Anthony's, but I'd extend them before they get to free agency. It's always a risk, but one well worth taking, IMO.
  2. Juan Soto's solo HR broke up a Williams no-hitter with 1 out in the 9th. We have not had a no-hitter this season. Williams was at 126 pitches when Vogt finally pulled him with 2 outs in the 9th. That's always a tough call - how many pitches do you allow your starter to throw in an attempt to get a no-hitter or a complete game?
  3. I was always a Bobby D fan. I was disappointed that he didn't work out for the Sox. Best of luck to him wherever he goes.
  4. It certainly doesn't look like it. As far as I know, none of the players even hinted at being disappointed at any lack of further moves at the deadline.
  5. I didn't want Abreu or Campbell traded either. As far as trading mid level prospects or guys like Hamilton, I don't know why nothing was done. I can only guess that Breslow didn't like what other teams were asking.
  6. I cannot argue with this. Your point that Grissom is competing with Gonzalez and not Hamilton makes sense. And Hamilton as a back up over Grissom as a back up makes a lot of sense.
  7. These types of extensions are always with risk, but IMO, it's the way to go. It's a win-win. I would rather see Breslow spending money on extending our youngsters than spending it on aging free agents. Great job on both sides!
  8. Locking up Anthony is a good start to using some of this money. I'd prefer spending the money this way over spending it on long-term deals for aging free agents.
  9. I haven't given up on Casas yet, but regardless of who the Sox have penciled in to play 1B, they need to have a better back up plan than they had this year.
  10. The title of the article is most appropriate. Refsnyder doesn't get the attention that guys like Bregman or Anthony get, but he's been great for the team, on the field and in the clubhouse.
  11. I'm sure it's a very complicated decision. Surgery is invasive. If I'm a pitcher (even if I'm not), I think I'd opt for non-surgical treatments first to avoid surgery if possible. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The problem is that if it doesn't work, there are weeks or months of "wasted" time for the player who then has to go through the surgery anyway. At any rate, I wish Houck a speedy and successful recovery.
  12. You have to love this. The Marlins are on a tear, BTW, but that is neither here nor there. It's only been one series, but I'm pretty sure that the Red Sox gained at least one game on all of the teams that "did better" than us at the deadline. I think the clubhouse is really happy that Duran is still with the team.
  13. Winning a World Series is difficult for any team, even for a team who, on paper, should have the best shot. That being the case, I certainly would not bet on the Red Sox winning it all, nor do I expect the Red Sox to win it all. However, do I think the Red Sox have a very good chance of making it into the postseason? Absolutely. Do I think the Red Sox have as good a chance of winning the WS once they get into the postseason? Absolutely. And yes, it always stings when you get eliminated.
  14. Max for president! We may or may not make the postseason, but I don't get the pessimism. We now have the 3rd best run differential in the AL, despite playing some very tough teams since the All Star break. There is good reason to be optimistic.
  15. As with most trades, it will take a while to truly assess how good or bad this was. I'm all about the long term, but it sure would be nice to have Priester in our rotation right now.
  16. Ironically, I think that's one of the reasons that they ultimately extended Devers.
  17. It is puzzling why Grissom isn't getting a look. The only thing I can think of is that the Red Sox are valuing defense at that position over offense. Plus Hamilton has speed. I have nothing against Hamilton. I just don't think Grissom has ever been given a fair chance at the big league level.
  18. I also think that Devers will hit well again, and I also will still think it was the right thing to trade him. As I've said before, I'm relieved to be rid of that contract. It's now wait to see what ownership does with the freed up money. The trade deadline was underwhelming, but I think that was more about the price in prospects versus any added cost in salary.
  19. Those of you who were clamoring for Anthony to be called up were right about how special he is. After struggling for a bit, he seems to have found his bearings. He is currently the player I have the most confidence in when at the plate. I'm not upset that Breslow waited to call him up. It seems to me that he is pretty high on Duran, Rafaela, and Abreu, which I agree with. Our deadline trade acquisitions were not what most of us hoped, but the best part of it for me is that we still have all of our outfielders.
  20. It's annoying because I pay good money for the Extra Innings package. I'm not about to pay more to watch games on the streaming services. One nice thing is that an hour or two after the game ends, Extra Innings archives it and I can go back and watch after the fact, which I did. It's still annoying though. On the bright side, Go Red Sox!
  21. Honestly, I'm surprised that we swept. Very happy, of course, but surprised. We were probably a little lucky to come away with 3 wins, but that's okay. We've had our share of unlucky losses. They all count the same.
  22. Stupid Apple+, At least the Roku games are still available with the Extra Innings package.
  23. Texas and Seattle are playing each other this weekend. That will help us one way or another. The Sox have to find a way to win the series against Houston.
  24. I have argued that it would have been the better thing to do. I know how awful Devers' defense at 3B is, but our middle infield defense would have been first rate and Devers would have been happy. An argument could be made (before the fact) that Devers/Bregman/Yoshida would be a stronger combination than Bregman/Campbell/Devers.
  25. Yeah, the Priester trade is one that might end up biting us (more than it already has.) May should eat some innings for us, which is not without some value, and will hopefully keep us in most games.
