  1. Well said 5GG. I completely agree. Except for the part about Jeter being a mostly solid defender.
  2. Even though he's no longer with us, I still hope Beni can find his way back. I'm pulling for him, as I am for JBJ. Not so much for Mookie.
  3. With Lester, I don't believe he ever countered the team's offer. I think after the initial lowball offer, Lester felt disrespected to the point where he said the negotiations were done. With Mookie, his counter was so unreasonable (IMO) that the writing was on the wall. No need for the Sox to make another offer.
  4. I would go that far. I really think Lester wanted to stay with the Sox. If I recall correctly, he was looking for something comparable to Homer Bailey's deal. Something along those lines would have gotten it done, IMO.
  5. It must be the new look.
  6. MLB will be investigating suspicious looking baseballs from Bauer's last start.
  7. Back in the 80s, they didn't have Statcast and all the various versions of K-Zone. I wonder how the accuracy of balls and strikes calls back then, with the outside chest protectors, compares with the accuracy these days.
  8. It's a compromise that would at least be better than having all balls and strikes called electronically.
  9. 100% No to robot umps.
  10. I agree. I think Lester would have happily stayed with the Sox had he been given a reasonable offer.
  11. I am far more irked about not re-signing Lester than I am about not re-signing Mookie.
  12. Randomness in baseball is one of my favorite topics. Interestingly, I was just reading this morning that it takes 67 games for a team's win-loss record to reach the break even point where skill accounts for 50% of that record and randomness accounts for 50%. Prior to that point, a team's record is based more on randomness than it is on skill. Someone asked the question about what we can take away from the opening series against the Os. Short answer: absolutely nothing.
  13. This is a great example of the randomness of baseball.
  14. The Yanks will probably win the division. It will make it all that much sweeter when we take them down in the playoffs.
  15. Against the AA lineup?
  16. It's also an illustration of why I think it is foolish, for lack of a better word, for a player to pass up a contract like that and gamble on getting more. It worked out for Mookie, but it might not have. As I posted before, if I were Mookie's mother, I would have strongly encouraged him to take the Red Sox offer.
  17. Don't get me started.
  18. Somebody, I think it was Joe Posnanski, had an interesting suggestion. If the pitch is an obvious ball or strike, like the one mentioned above, it would be relayed to the umpire electronically, so that there would be no egregious calls. Umpires would still be on their own when it comes to borderline calls. That might seem somewhat counterintuitive, but I like the suggestion.
  19. Fair enough on points 1 and 2, though I still think that Mookie was sending a message to the Sox with his counter. And I remain utterly in shock that the Dodgers seemingly bid against themselves and gave him that contract. On your 3rd point, I don't see the Sox giving a similar contract to another player.
  20. Alex Speier @alexspeier · In the wild card era, 18 percent of teams that got off to an 0-3 start reached the playoffs. The Red Sox are not among them- they’ve never made the playoffs after an 0-3 star The law of averages is on our side!
  21. No, it's not, but I fully expect that to improve.
  22. Also, I chose the drive option, only because it included the word "doofus".
  23. Walk toward the light, my friend. Our comeback starts tomorrow!
  24. JD is the only guy in our line up who has done anything worth mentioning. And one of his doubles was the sun-aided variety.
