  1. I do think the pens are much more specialized these days. In the past, if the starter was knocked out early, you'd bring in the 'long man' who typically wasn't as good as the starter. But I agree that if you have a really good starting pitcher, an ace type, you want him out of the game as soon as possible.
  2. But you also have 2 of your best four hitters in the 1 and 2 spots. It may just buy you one extra inning, but that is an advantage.
  3. That's a fair point. Just thinking about some rule changes recently, like the catcher not being able to block the plate to avoid collisions at the plate, or the Chase Utley Rule at 2nd base. I'm not saying that the rules are bad rules, but these are more examples of how players are being more and more protected. Maybe it's just my perception, but players (and society in general) don't seem as tough as they were back in the day. Now soccer players - they are some tough cookies.
  4. That depends on how good the pen is. In many cases, a reliever pitching for one or two innings is a better pitcher than a starter.
  5. With an opener, you could feasibly keep the 'starter' in for an extra inning or two without having to face the top of the line up a 3rd time.
  6. I'm wondering, however, if the increase in TJS has anything to do with the fact that pitchers are being protected or 'babied' more along the way.
  7. Great minds think alike. LOL
  8. You get one of your best pitchers to face the top of the order to start the game. Also, it helps, in theory, with the starting pitcher not having to face the top of the order the 3rd time through.
  9. I really liked the days when we had those lineups that would work the counts and just wear the starting pitcher down. There is no longer much reward to being able to get a starter's pitch count up and knock him out of the game early. On the other side, the days of a pitcher pitching a complete game are almost all but history.
  10. The idea of an opener absolutely does have a brilliance to it. I still don't like it.
  11. These are legitimate concerns, for sure. JD and Cora seem to think it's a mechanical issue.
  12. Not even close.
  13. Well at least you will have the opportunity to be pleasantly surprised.
  14. I am looking forward to the day that Whitlock and Ottavino combine to shut down the Yankees in the ALCS to send the Red Sox to the 2021 World Series.
  15. Six of our first 9 games are against the Orioles. If we start off 3-6, I'm packing it in. Let's go!
  16. I like what Bloom is doing as well. There will come a time when he signs players to those larger contracts, but I like what he's doing in the meantime.
  17. I don't like it. I don't like bullpen games and I don't like the idea of an opener.
  18. I'm not sure what the answer to that question is. Analytics has a lot to do with it. I think a lot of it is that owners and GMs want to protect their investments, and therefore managers are erring too far on the side of caution. Also, people in general are much bigger wusses today than we were in the past.
  19. You, my friend, sound worried.
  20. If starting pitcher are going to be devalued, their salaries need to reflect this shift.
  21. Yes, it is. That 3rd time through the order penalty is real, even when a pitcher was cruising up to that point.
  22. Math teachers also approve. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think our pitching staff, both starting and relieving, is coming together pretty nicely. If they can stay healthy, which is a big if, they should be solid. I'm not talking about a lights out staff, but solid. They should be good enough to give our offense the chance to win a lot of games. Our depth looks so much better than it did last year.
  23. Exactly Bell. You could be saving your best reliever for a 9th inning situation in which he isn't even needed. Use him when you know he's needed.
  24. On a slightly different note, I think too much emphasis is being placed on bullpens these days. Teams need to go back to the system where starting pitchers had more importance and bullpens had less. I really don't like the devaluing of the starting pitcher that we've been seeing.
  25. I am interested to see/hear them on the broadcasts. I'm not sure how that baseball talent will translate to broadcasting talent, but they should have some good insight and stories to share.
