  1. The Red Sox starters averaged 4.1 innings per start last year. LOL This year, they are averaging 5 innings per start, right at league average.
  2. It's interesting that two teams that were supposed to be offensive juggernauts, the Yankees and the Jays, are currently ranked 27th and 29th in offensive fWAR. I have always thought that their rotations, outside of Cole, had just as many question marks as our rotation does. Much to my dismay, I think the Yankees will eventually get it together, and will still likely win the division. However, it's not going to be the cakewalk that so many people predicted it would be.
  3. I hope that the two teams remain close in the standings all year. Makes for exciting baseball.
  4. If I'm not rooting for the Sox, I almost always root for the underdog. I really don't have anything against the Dodgers except that they won it last year.
  5. Should a pitcher get credit for a no hitter in a 5 inning, rain shortened game? IMO, it has to be a regularly sanctioned 9 inning game. If the home team doesn't have to bat in the bottom of the 9th, it counts.
  6. The league average for innings pitched per games started has been steadily declining over at least the past 5 years. Much of that is undoubtedly due to the opener and the bullpen games, but the fact is, relief pitchers are taking on a bigger role than they have in the past. Hence, more relievers are needed. Here are average number of innings pitched by the starter since 2015: 2015: 5.8 2016: 5.7 2017: 5.5 2018: 5.3 2019: 5.0 2020: 4.7 2021: Currently 5.0
  7. Yes. I love having 14 pitchers.
  8. That's about as good of a 2-5 as you're going to see.
  9. “I like hitting leadoff. I’m not going to lie to you,” Hernández said. “I want to hit leadoff. Alex (Cora) challenged me to earn that spot. And I feel like when I hit in the first inning, I’m a little bit more involved in the game. And it also gives me a chance to see the starting pitcher maybe a third time.”
  10. Anyone who hasn't taken the time to watch some Padres/Dodgers baseball should do themselves a favor and watch some. Their series have been very entertaining so far. Go Padres.
  11. I have to disagree. What about the guys who lost their no hit bids in the 8th or 9th innings? Bumgarner was at 98 pitches. Would he have been able to complete 2 more innings if it had been a 9 inning game? While he pitched a great game, pitching for 7 innings is not the same as pitching for 9 innings.
  12. When Cora first announced that Kike' was going to lead off, I was so against the idea that I posted something to the effect of disowning Cora as my manager. Statistically speaking, Kike' has no business being a leadoff hitter. FTR, like you, I would have left Verdugo in the leadoff spot. That said, my belief has always been that the way a manager manages his players is far more important than any in game decisions. When I say that I trust Cora's judgment, it is because of his ability to relate to his players and get the most out of them. He knows best how to put them in a position to make them successful. As Bell pointed out, batting order really doesn't make as big a difference as most people think it does. Because of that, it's probably more beneficial to bat players where they feel comfortable as opposed to batting them where they should statistically bat. There will likely come a time when Kike' needs to be dropped down in the order.
  13. That was a wild 10th inning too. After starting 0-6, the As are now 12-7 with an 11-game win streak. Gotta love baseball.
  14. I read an interesting article today by Matt Collins, talking about the team's unsustainable team BABIP of .342. Xander is at .489, Arroyo is at .441, and JD is at .409. In other words, we've had some luck on our side. The good news is, while the Sox offense will regress, they should still be good enough to be one of the top, if not the top, offense in the AL.
  15. Beni came up to bat in his game last night with 2 outs and the bases loaded. He swung at the first pitch and grounded out weakly to the 2nd baseman. I felt so bad for him. It was probably a good move to trade Beni, but that one of the few moves that I really didn't like when it happened. (In terms of the current team.)
  16. ERA-wise, it doesn't look great, but I consider it a quality start because the pitcher got reasonably deep into the game and kept the team in the game. That's really all I ask for with any start. It'd be nice if the starters could pitch 7 or 8 innings, but those days are mostly gone.
  17. I like to call that the Cora Factor.
  18. In terms of run differential, the Red Sox are currently the class of the league.
  19. I already stated, more than once, my reasons for thinking that 14 pitchers is a good idea. Typing that I trust Cora saves me a lot of time. LOL
  20. And 2 of those runs were kind of gifted to the Yanks.
  21. It's not fun when you're down 1 or 2 runs and you don't have those 2 extra innings to try to come back. Like what happened to the Sox in Game 1 of the double header against the ChiSox
  22. As long as he's been in the league, he's still a very young player. I tend to think that he will improve defensively as well. Regardless, he's a special player. Leave him alone and just let him do his thing.
  23. I would have had Verdugo leading off, Bogaerts 2nd, JD 4th, and Devers 5th. To me, those are the 4 most important spots in the batting order. Put Kike 3rd. That said, Cora has things under control. Despite my previous criticism of Cora for putting Kike in the leadoff spot, I trust that he knows what he's doing. His line up is working. Leave it alone.
  24. In Cora we trust. If he feels like we're in a better position with 14 pitchers, then that's good enough for me.
