  1. Probably. Pythagoras was the man.
  2. It's the beauty of baseball. Randomness. That's why teams will be roughly .500 in close games. They can go either way on one bounce of the ball. As long as the team is not continually getting blown away, we are in good shape. By comparison, we were 8-13 (.381) in blowouts last year.
  3. Fair point. It's frustrating having a good chance to put up a big crooked number and having Dalbec and Renfroe strike out. Vazquez at least made contact. That said, the Sox still scored 6 runs in that game and had plenty of baserunners (which is a good sign, despite them not scoring). The offense was not the problem in last night's game. The pitching just couldn't get it done.
  4. Ouch. He came up last night with bases loaded and 0 outs. He struck out.
  5. We all have to remember that no matter how much we know about baseball, or think we know about baseball, none of us is in a better position to make decisions about the team than Cora (or the FO) is. That doesn't mean that Cora won't make mistakes. But it does mean that he has very valid reasons for making the decisions that he makes, sometimes reasons that we may have no clue about. It also doesn't mean that we can question his decisions. We all do that, some more than others. For me, Cora has earned the benefit of the doubt (although I'm still not on board with Kike leading off.) In Cora we trust.
  6. By my count, all but 2 (maybe 3) of the games that we've lost have been winnable. As frustrating as losing those close games is, it's really a good sign for the team. It's much better than getting blown out in losses. As I've posted many times, all teams, even the best teams, will be roughly .500 in the close games. It's a team's record in blowout games that is the true measure of the team's talent. Okay, maybe not a 'true' measure, but a much better measure. We are 6-2 (.750) in blowout games. Small sample, of course.
  7. I was just thinking the same thing about our 7-8-9 hitters. We can easily bury Dalbec in the #9 hole, but trying to cover 3 spots in a row is a different story. I like having Arroyo and Gonzalez hitting 7 and 8. I think it's pretty much a given that Santana will up and Franchy will be down as soon as Santana is ready.
  8. The Yankees are only 1/2 game behind the Red Sox by Pythagorean W-L records.
  9. The Giants are currently leading the division by 1/2 game over the Dodgers and the Padres. Good stuff. Last night's Dodgers/Brewers game was really good. Tough loss for the Dodgers in 11 innings. Every team in the NL East is under .500, and the division is separated by 1.5 games. Go baseball!
  10. The baseball fans here are the best. Very knowledgeable, and yet fanatical enough to let our emotions get the best of us sometimes. Not that wanting Kike out of the leadoff spot is an emotional reaction. It has merit. Going into the season, most people were hoping for a watchable product. I think we have hit that standard and then some. We still have a long way to go, but so far, so good. An 88 win pace is certainly doable.
  11. I still expect the Yankees to end up winning the division. I just don't think they're as dominant as the preseason predictions made them out to be. They will not coast through the season.
  12. Right. He also said that you can't gauge how good your pitching is against them because they are a AA lineup.
  13. LOL For sure. I'm not sure if it's ever happened in baseball (probably?), but if one of our rookies did get injured from carrying beer or something like that, I'm sure my tune about hazing would change.
  14. No one knows for sure exactly why Mookie was traded, nor do we know for sure exactly how the negotiations, or lack thereof, progressed. But I know for sure that I am happy with the Mookie trade and that I have no regrets about him not being on the team anymore. 1. I am deeply opposed to that type of monster contract for any player. 2. I am turned off by Mookie's "I want the most money" attitude. 3. It would have been negligent of the Red Sox not to trade Mookie once they realized that a deal was not going to be made. 4. Bloom got a really good return. 5. I am an Alex Verdugo fan. All that said, I will give Mookie credit for handling the trade with class. To my knowledge, he has not once badmouthed the Red Sox organization or in any way implied that the Sox treated him badly.
  15. I think that it depends on the type and the degree of hazing.
  16. And then there's this attitude: Garrett Whitlock, Boston Red Sox rookie: ‘I’ll be the janitor on this team if that means I get to be in the big leagues’ Updated Apr 30, 2021; Posted Apr 30, 2021 By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com ARLINGTON, Texas — Righty Garrett Whitlock is in charge of carrying the beer onto the team plane, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “I just try to be a good rookie,” Whitlock said Friday. “Everyone’s got a role to play on the team. So I told (bench coach) Will (Venable) when I first showed up, I said, ‘Shoot. I’ll be the janitor on this team if that means I get to be in the big leagues.’ Whatever the job is that I can do to possibly help the team out, that’s what I’m glad to be doing.”
  17. I was against putting Kike in the lead off spot as much as anyone was. However, I will support Cora's decision and the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mantra as long as the team is winning. Might we be better than we currently are if Verdugo was leading off? It's possible. But it's also just as possible that we wouldn't be. Line up changes just don't make that big of a difference. We have the best record in baseball. If the offense really starts struggling, then I'm all for dropping Kike down in the order. For now, I'd let it ride.
  18. Orioles and Tigers
  19. Dodgers Place Brusdar Graterol On 10-Day IL By Connor Byrne | April 29, 2021 at 7:03pm CDT The Dodgers have placed right-hander Brusdar Graterol on the 10-day injured list with forearm tightness, per a club announcement. A forearm issue is particularly unwelcome news regarding Graterol, who underwent Tommy John surgery as a Twins prospect in 2016 and also battled shoulder problems as a member of the organization.
  20. There was nothing wrong with the Red Sox offer. Mookie's counter offer is what's embarrassing.
  21. You say that like it's a bad thing.
  22. I thought the Mets crew was very good. I usually can't say that about the away team's announcers.
  23. As Bell pointed out, pinch hitters typically don't hit that well. Is the upgrade in a pinch hitting option that we'd get from Santana, Chavis, or Duran better than having an extra reliever? IMO, no. Besides, we want those guys playing every day, not sitting on the bench waiting for a pinch hitting opportunity.
  24. When you factor in the difference in cost, it absolutely is a good trade, regardless of what Downs or Wong does.
  25. I don't recall a game where I really felt like we needed a pinch hitter and one wasn't available. Also, I'm not sure who we would be replacing defensively. Do we have a great pinch hitter or a defensive wizard waiting to be called up, but is being blocked by an extra pitcher?
