  1. Rock Bottom 2021 AL East - New York Yankees
  2. Being a team that is supposed to dominate the division carries a lot of expectations and pressure with it. As you said, the Yankees will be back, but it might not be as easy a ride as they were expecting.
  3. First place Boston Red Sox. Has a nice ring to it.
  4. I'm not sure that it mattered. Once Betts was traded, I don't think he was coming back either way.
  5. As we will all come to realize with the Betts trade.
  6. Whether it was Betts who really wanted to leave or it was the Red Sox simply not willing to go any higher with their offer, once it became apparent that we were not retaining him, it was absolutely the right call to trade him. I have zero regrets about the trade.
  7. Also, as great a player as Trout is, that contract is crazy.
  8. No doubt that Mookie's agent is aware of what other players are signing for. When Trout signed that 12-year extension, he was no longer a pre-arb or arb player. My point was about players who are still in their first 6 years of service and still don't have a lot of bargaining power. If I'm not mistaken, Trout's previous extension, given during his arb years, was somewhat of a team discount.
  9. It's way early, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it in the moment.
  10. No mention of Musgrove's no hitter, the first in Padres history? Good story. This is why we love baseball.
  11. I can agree with that. They should bring back the old equipment and see if it helps.
  12. I agree that neither Lester nor Mookie were likely to return to the Sox once they were traded. I have to disagree with you about the Sox offers to Mookie being lowball offers. They were quite respectable offers (unlike the one to Lester), and you have to keep in mind that Mookie was still in his arb years and under team control. There is an understanding that for players who have not yet reached FA to receive that type of career security, they must be willing to give the team somewhat of a discount. The team cannot assume all of the risk without getting a discount in return. The offers to Mookie were more than fair.
  13. Some of the FO's thinking with Lester was their philosophy, at the time, of not signing pitchers into their 30s to long term contracts. I'm not sure that Lester would have come back to the Sox even if they had given him a second offer. I agree, though, that it wouldn't have hurt. I have never wanted to sign Mookie to that kind of contract, so in that regard, I'm glad the Sox didn't give him another offer.
  14. I'm not completely on board with the 'ease of finding someone to fill his position' part, but I agree with the rest. The same reasons we traded Beni.
  15. They did choose to go silent. I understand what you're saying about optics, but I think they had good reason to do so. The Sox really screwed up with Lester's first offer. The damage was done, unfortunately.
  16. I don't disagree. I don't think Bloom is going to try to follow Tampa's Way, but rather he will be following LA's Way. I am just saying that if the Sox were trying to move JD, it wasn't because of his 2020 performance.
  17. It's been mentioned, but I think our pitching staff deserves a shout out for their performances so far. That is both the starting pitchers and the relievers. I'm not expecting them to be world beaters, but if they can just keep the team in the game, the team should be able to win the majority of those games. We could easily be 6-1 based off of our pitching. A pleasant surprise to date.
  18. No, we are not. But I'm certain that they are not making moves based off of poor performances over short samples. If the Sox were trying to move JD, I feel confident that it was for reasons other than the way JD performed last season.
  19. Ortiz is a Red Sox icon. It's hard to compare anyone to him. That said, I think you're being a little harsh on JD.
  20. We are thankful that our FO has more patience than some of the posters here.
  21. We are not trading JD. We will need him for our playoff run this year, not to mention next year.
  22. Obviously, it's a very small sample, but you can't help but be excited about this guy. What a great pick up for the Sox if he ends up being really good.
  23. It was an amazing season, no doubt about that. In terms of talent, the team was great. I would argue, however, that they were also aided by a good amount of good luck. That is not to take anything away from that team, but to point out that every team that wins the World Series is helped by a fair amount of good luck.
  24. Exactly. Besides the randomness of the relatively small sample, we had all of those other COVID related factors to consider last season as well.
