  1. I can't remember any specific games or managers, but I know that it has happened, and that managers are often questioned about why they didn't bring in their best reliever. That said, we must also remember that we don't know what the outcome of the game would have been even if the manager had brought in his best reliever. Managerial moves like this actually make a very small difference in win expectancy. I would still go with the my best reliever in the 7th or 8th if the situation called for it, and take my chances with another reliever in the 9th.
  2. If you have a 1 run game in the 9th versus a 1 run game in the 7th, then certainly, everything is more amped up in the 9th inning. But if you have a 1 run game in the 7th with the heart of the order coming up versus a 3 run game in the 9th with the bottom of the order coming up (or worse, the game could be lost by that point), then I would have to disagree about the 9th inning being more amped up. The problem is, when you have a high leverage situation in the 7th, you don't know that the high leverage situation will still exist in the 9th. IMO, it's better to save the game when the game is on the line, then worry about the 9th inning when you get there. I'd prefer not lose the game with my best reliever sitting on the bench.
  3. Saves and blown saves are terrible stats. Don't get me started.
  4. ^^This 100%. It makes little sense to save your best reliever for a 9th inning save opportunity that may never come.
  5. Cora has the Midas touch.
  6. I think a lot of it for Devers is mental. It's the same reason that he can make Gold Glove caliber plays, then turn around and boot the routine ones.
  7. Alex Cora on Red Sox: 'There's something cool going on here' Don't sleep on the Red Sox people!
  8. Oh stop. Why hasn't that sealed letter been unsealed?
  9. I was going to add that the 1/3 better doesn't even take into account the improvement in offense we will see. And again, don't forget the Cora Factor!
  10. Exactly Oldtimer. Speedy runners have more value hitting in front of singles hitters than they have hitting in front of your homerun hitters.
  11. If our rotation is 1/3 better than it was last year, which was 64.8 wins over a 162 game season, then that puts us at 86.4 wins this year.
  12. Exactly. Our rotation depth looks much better than it did last year.
  13. Right. And even if he is facing major league pitchers, they are typically working on certain aspects of their game and not necessarily trying so much to get hitters out.
  14. He should definitely not be rushed back, but if he's healthy and ready, then there isn't any reason for him not to pitch this year. Even if the team is completely out of the running, I think Sale should return if he's cleared to go.
  15. Speed is always an asset and should be valued. Steals, OTOH, were generally overrated. Most teams were actually doing themselves more harm than good by attempting so many steals, with a less than 70% success rate.
  16. I am very excited to hear about Cora's and ERod's excitement surrounding ERod's return to the mound. He seems to be 100% recovered and ready to go. That's not only great for the team, but more importantly, great for ERod. Playoffs here we come! Let's go!
  17. As you mentioned, extremely small sample size, but Kike has so far taken off in the role of leadoff hitter. I am not convinced that he is a leadoff hitter, but as I just posted in another thread, Cora seem to have the Midas touch with his decisions. He also has the knack for getting the most out of his players. So, while I'm not in agreement with Kike batting leadoff (I would keep Verdugo in the leadoff spot), I will defer to Cora's judgment for the time being.
  18. I am still concerned about team defense and wish we had signed a defensive oriented center fielder. I prefer Verdugo in right field as opposed to center, but it sounds like Cora is leaning towards Verdugo playing a lot in CF. Cora has indicated that he is not going to have set outfield alignment, but will instead use his players' versatility as a tool. I'm not sure that I'm in agreement with that philosophy (I really liked the consistency we had with Beni, JBJ, and Mookie), but Cora knows what he's doing and seems to almost always make the right decisions.
  19. There is no way I'm giving Betts a 12 year contract for $350 mil, or even a 10 year contract for $300 mil. Therefore, I have no regrets about trading him and getting a pretty decent haul in return.
  20. O M G I'm speechless.
  21. I like Verdugo leading off. I understand what Cora is trying to do, I just don't agree with it. At all. Your speedy players have more value hitting in front of your singles hitters rather than in front of the big bats. If he had speed and a good OBP, then that might be a different story.
  22. I regret losing JBJ and Beni more than I regret losing Betts.
  23. I am happy for him too. I am really sad that he won't be our CFer this season.. I figured that another team would pay him more than the Sox would be willing to pay.
