  1. Ha ha! Stars for prospects! The Red Sox way. Nice gesture, though, to pick up part of his salary. Now who will be the first apologist to argue this shows the RS commitment to home-grown talent.
  2. Exactly. (Too bad other fans are more concerned with Henry's bank account than what appears on the field.) I'm sure those fans are still p.o.'d that the RS didn't get rid of Williams, when they had that far better fielder Gene Stevens ready to step in.
  3. This looks as if it is going exactly as ownership wants. (well, they'd like maybe 20 more wins to appear by magic each season, but if not, who cares, really?)
  4. For some guys here, the glass is always 1-1/8 full apparently.
  5. You guys do realize that no one, including yourselves, has the slightest idea or interest in what you believe you are arguing about?
  6. But wasn't the argument that the RS were fine because they were acting just like LA/NY/Tx/PHIL? Now you say we don't want to act like that? So how are the RS going to get better? by signing the right kind of boring replaceable journeymen? rather than the wrong kind of boring replaceable journeymen?
  7. Agree 100%. Part of the problem is free-agency, of course, but no one wants that changed (except owners). It's hardly riveting for old farts like us to watch a team show up each year made up of a different selection of journeymen, as if players were simply pieces in a fantasy league. Th RS are not going to the WS or inspire fan interest because suddenly they pick up McGuire, or Tommy Pham, or Korey Kluber, or even Jensen, or whoever they get this year who will be completely forgotten in two years.
  8. And how many of those teams have had last place finishes 3 or the last 4 or 5 years?
  9. Good question. Equally good questions: what if they win all of them? What if RS pitchers pitch 80 shutouts? What if McGuire has 69 home runs by then? What if they trade a prospect for Mookie? What if Ted comes back from the cryo-sphere and hits .411? We really should consider these questions in detail before making any judgments on the team.
  10. The subject, as you know perfectly well, is not "economic considerations generally"; the subject is STATE TAXES, which a number of you were arguing was a key factor in determining where to live. Now just in case there's confusion here, let me state my position again: anyone who bases 'where they live' on the difference between state taxes is someone I just cannot relate to. (Now for further clarity, I'm not even saying it's BAD or MORONIC to be a money-grubbing Scrooge who would sacrifice happiness for a few extra bucks. If that's what someone wants to do, go for it.)
  11. Unlike many posters here apparently, poor people do not choose where to live based on state taxes.
  12. Those who choose where to live based on state taxes deserve to live where they live.
  13. I love the argument that since poor people have to struggle to get by financially, then it's perfectly ok for comfortable middle-class people or the filthy rich to scrape and claw for every nickel they can get as well. Note above, how JH's frugality is seen as comparable to the micro-economies of people shopping at the 99c store.
  14. People for whom $50/month makes a big difference in their living situations ALSO cannot relate to those of you who apparently would make any sacrifice in order to have that money. (But at least I'm beginning to understand why many posters here seem so concerned with the size of JH's wallet.)
  15. You answered your own question, no? More money in ownership pockets--the sole purpose of all businesses.
  16. If you had read and thought about my post, you'd realize you are wrong. Every state I've lived in has what you call high taxes. I do not make life-decisions based on 4-5% of my income (whether that is 1K or 100K). And for those who would rather live in Idaho or Texas or the Dakotas (where I've also lived), or Oklahoma or rural Indiana because they will have another thousand or two to spend on amazon, have at it!
  17. It's very difficult for me to relate to anyone who would choose where to live based not on the beauty of the environment, services provided, schools, culture, etc. but rather on state taxes.
  18. The RS cannot trade their way out of the mess JH has created. They can buy their way out of it, but you know ...
  19. Well, given their record, and given how they treat their best players, what possible reason (other than money) would any player have to prefer Boston to LAD? The weather?
  20. 100% agree. If you're in a business, and you find that you don't give a cr*p about your employees, customers, or clients, then no matter how money you make, it's time to go into another line of work.
  21. Trade? How many mediocre assets do you get rid of to replace with other mediocre assets? (Remember, the condition is that you absolutely cannot spend money or offer a market-value trade.)
  22. How about a policy of hiring the best employees you can and paying them market value?
  23. Amusing but depressing typo, since even SpellCheck knows that 'relevance' is now a pipe dream!
  24. Where are the triumphant posts by Management: "DODGED ANOTHER ONE!!!" Meanwhile, back to scouring the injury reports and the police blotter.
