    Agreed. The logic of taking a guy who is not a good fielder, then expecting him to play a position he's never played before-- that sort of logic completely escapes me. If you must put RD in the field, then put him at 3rd, a position he knows how to play, and let Bregman play 1B. What? Bregman doesn't want to do that? Well then he's obviously a selfish diva and should be sent to Worcester.

    Exactly. We have no idea what Raffy actually said, and won't know until we have a transcription in Spanish. (And as far as the latest report of 'his teammates turning against him,' that is based on a single quotation, saying he should just keep quiet and say nothing. Hell, I'd advise him the same thing, since every time he says anything, media members and fans check the latest translation then over-read it for every nuance imaginable: it's like a bunch of dumb-ass sophomores in a comp. lit. class.

    Exactly. Breslow seems more concerned about showing what a bad-ass tough guy he is; you know, like running one of the star players he inherited out of town. And a number of would-be GMs seem to agree with him. Of course, RS fans have a long history of turning against their stars: Williams, of course; then Boggs, Clemens. And, although memories seem short, a number of 'fans' fully supported getting rid of Betts. (I assume this was because someone in authority made the decision, and for many contemporary Americans, this seems enough).

    They already found that position and he's good at it. But I suppose in contemporary business it's a GREAT idea to alienate your productive employers and thus devalue your investment. You can always declare victory and tank.

    Why the GM wants to micromanage a team and alienating one of his star players in the process is beyond me. You have a 300,000,000 investment! Take care of it. (What is most disturbing about this article is the suggestion that Breslow's prickly relationship with Raffy is due to the fact that Bloom signed him. ... I guess a general rule would be that when your GM is as much in the news as the players, something is seriously amiss).

    You guys are so ambitious. I'm driving 14 miles to town, and that pretty much should do it for the day.

    I'm told that one reason players are reluctant to do this is that the pay-scale for 1B is less than other positions.

    And a good team manager would answer: "You want me to try you at a position you've never played so that I can bench an good fielding .300 hitter?"

    Article says Casas has ruptured patella tendon. and is on 10-day IL. 10-day? Is that in case the diagnosis is not correct? That's like a 6-12 month recovery. no?

    Love Bregman's approach, Simple set-up, dead quiet when pitcher starts, completely balanced. Reminds me of Manny. It always seemed to me that the simplest swing was best (in tennis, golf, baseball. whatever). Not that it's necessarily the most effective or powerful. But when you're 'off', you can get back to the timing quickly because of the simplicity of the set-up. (And oh yes, on that last play? that's why I don't want to trade Duran for some soul-less middle reliever)

    Again, I'm not talking baseball value (i.e., your 59crWAR+a&^4 rating). I 'm talking about who I like to watch play. (I watch lots of sports and with the exception of the RS, I don't relly care who wins--I watch great athletes because I like to see great athletes perform). So I love watching Duran run the bases; I also like Campbell, Raphaela, and even poor David Hamilton. (I was also a Piersall fan, although there were obviously MANY players who were better--[think what HE could have brought in a trade for some middle relievers]). I also like to watch players develop over time, and I thus don't give a crap about their trade value--I want to watch players I 'know' (something that is getting increasingly difficult in ALL sports).

    Come on, guys. 'Fewer' games. not 'less.' Let's argue about substantive matters.

    The issue is not whether Betts and Duran are the same person--I believe they are not, although I've never seen them photographed together. The issue is who is the most exciting player (not the best player) on the team. I realize reasonable people can disagree on this, and it's not an objective problem. But I can't think of any RS player I would rather watch (Raphaela? Campbell?). As a fan, if all I cared about was wins/losses, d%WAR#r5, and salary matters, I would just check the standings at the end of the season. Why bother to watch the games?

    Oh yeah. Perfect. Identify the most exciting player on team (Duran), and get rid of him. Worked great for Betts.

    after that interview a couple of weeks ago, I'm a JD fan. Love that last play; even after laying out, he recovered to get the ball back to the infield. Quite a different player (person?) from what he was two years ago.
