  1. Didn't Youk keep both hands on the bat on the follow-through?
  2. You guys are right--elbow pad decides it?
  3. Nor the hi-tech elbow pad?
  4. I was thinking Hanley, but I doubt he would be eligible for this contest!
  5. 'You won't do it? ' He said no. So now we require a study of his mental state to know what the 'no' referred to : the first clause? or the second? and what does a double-negative mean in Spanish perhaps? Let it go. Dragging this out is a pretty good way of assuring that we don't hear from him again.
  6. That's overthinking it, no? He just answered simply and unambiguously with a standard sports cliche: "I'll do whatever ..." So case closed
  7. Not sure he would. Why would he expect anyone to allow themselves to be 'set right' in a language they clearly do not understand? He never said anything the least bit controversial. But oh well, at least it's over, and the season is about to start.
  8. But who's going to wipe the drool off your chin? (I suppose, just going from personal experience, who gives a cr*p?)
  9. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44239588/rafael-devers-told-red-sox-do-need Gosh, what a surprise! Seems like the uproar was pretty much manufactured by native English speakers who didn't bother to consider what he actually said or meant.
  10. Story has played 100 games only once in the past 5 years. I'm taking the unders.
  11. Oh, I see. Didn't realize you can bring a pitcher back in ST. Didn't matter; he wasn't much better the second time through the order.
  12. WTH just happened? Houck pitched to seven batters (3 hits, 2W and 3runs) and got lifted; reliever gets a double-play. Now Houck is said to be pitching in the second inning. No tv or radio-- Anyone know what just went down?
  13. Well, at least Houck looks ready: today's line, 7 batters, 1 out, 4 hits and two walks. 3 runs (so far), leaving the ducks on the pond. Bailed out by ... Cy ... or is it Isaac? Delock?? No Isaac Stebens.
  14. I'm guessing (and it's only that) that baseballs are more precisely made and tested today? 'Back in the day' (whenever that was), there was likely a greater margin of error and occasionally one of these big boppers got into a livelier outlier? (Of course I have no evidence whatsoever for this, other than the image in my mind of an exploited worker bending over to pull some stitches tight. Maybe every now and then, for her 1.75/hour, she said, 'damn it, I've putting a little extra on this puppy ...')
  15. Here are a couple more, both with conclusions that counter many statements made here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/298909145_Injury_Trends_in_Major_League_Baseball_Over_18_Seasons_1998-2015/link/5865731308ae329d620459e1/download?_tp=eyJjb250ZXh0Ijp7ImZpcnN0UGFnZSI6InB1YmxpY2F0aW9uIiwicGFnZSI6InB1YmxpY2F0aW9uIn19 This one shows a steady rise in injuries well before institution of pitch clock. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0972978X24002460 This one addresses the exact question raised here: has the pitch clock resulted in more injuries? Again, the conclusion is the same as in all studies I've looked at. NO. (But, you know, I mean science is, you know, not real, as my cousin Vinnie, whose friend had an uncle who was really into sports, used to say when he was wasted enough.)
  16. Is it unseemly to ask why the f. Ottavino is in a RS uniform?
  17. Statements such as "studies have shown" or "experts say" are not data. If they don't cite and describe the study (or 'experts'), they don't even rise to the level of 'secondary sourced anecdote.' There has only been one study cited here, I think. And it can be critiqued if anyone is so inclined. Otherwise, it's just "Back in aught-6, I was talking to my cousin, who told me of a guy who ..."
  18. Injuries every day? You have that in EVERY sport. The one piece of evidence (non-anecdotal) offered above suggests that there is no increase in injury for pitchers related to the pitch clock. That evidence may or may not be valid, but it's the only thing offered except pure speculation and the whining of individual pitchers.
  19. Clearly it's the fault of the pitch clock, which doesn't allow them to dig in. As in golf (or at least for the group in front of me), every hitter should be allowed time between pitches to check for wind, calculate the distance to a particular part of the wall, consult his scorecard notes, step out due to crowd noise, and mock-bounce the bat eight times off the plate.
  20. Good article. Also, I wouldn't care if there were a rise in injurieies. I don't want to sit through a 5 hour game or wait for Josh Beckett to walk around the mound between pitches like my dog determining which leg to raise on a fence post, just bec. a pitcher (or his mom) is worried about Tommy John.
  21. I'm with OR-- Brock Holt.
  22. Aren't there rules against putting guys on the 60-day IL just to open up a spot on the 40-man roster?
  23. Incredible discipline and control of strike zone. I suspect the new ABS has something to do with it,
  24. But he is also ERROR-FREE! with no strikeouts, so his ei0qojo9ehgWAR must be off the charts.
