The MLB payroll and payroll tax systems are unique, methinks. Are there any other industries in which companies whose payroll exceeds a certain level gets penalized for it? And that's just one of the quirks.

I don't disagree. But one could argue that the fans let them get away with it. No matter how many times these negotiation breakdowns hurt the game, the fans keep coming back, keep paying more and making the owners and the players richer. We're suckers, in other words.

I used to be interested in US college football, but I finally had my fill of all the corruption. Even if it wasn't for that I think it gets a little boring when it's always dominated by Alabama and the other regulars.

Until Bloom came along, Red Sox fans had never seen much of those "buying prospects" deals. I think that's part of the reason some of them flip out a bit about the Benintendi and Renfroe trades. -
Right. I was just mentioning the ones that really lined up with each other. Bloom has actually done 3 of those "buying prospects" deals now.

My main point was that the approach used by Bloom in the two offseasons has been very similar. Cheap starters on short-term contracts, and a surprising trade of an outfielder primarily to obtain prospects.

There's always been plenty of infighting amongst the posse.

No one was thrilled with Richards or Perez.

So far the totality is very similar to last offseason, with the exception of not signing any position players. Last year he signed Richards and Perez. This year he signed Paxton, Wacha and Hill. Last year he traded Benintendi for Cordero and prospects. This year he traded Renfroe for Bradley and prospects.

Pro sports is a somewhat unusual industry. It's an organized entertainment business in which, as you say, a relatively small number of people share a vast amount of money.

On the flip side of that: -Owners are clearly making huge piles of money, especially in the growth in market value of franchises. -The players are the ones who generate all the revenue. I don't really feel sympathy for either side. But it's sure as heck frustrating that they can't do a better job bargaining with each other.

I disagree. Bloom has done things very similar to what he did last offseason. And I have to give Old Red his due on this point, because Kennedy apparently did pretty much say they would be continuing with the same approach.

I would add that we know there's still a ton of money in the game, since the Texas Rangers just invested $500 million in 2 players.

I'm staying with the Sticky Stuff theory on Richards and Perez. Richards basically said his career was over when the crackdown came. It was refreshingly honest and disturbing at the same time.

True. I'm not sure Bauer will ever play in MLB again, though. He was already a dubious character before this latest bizarre scandal.

So maybe we trade Bogaerts for some guy who was very overpaid in 2021 but has upside, plus 2-3 prospects...

Seager got $325 mill, what does Correa want? Some guys will get more than expected and some less. It was a little surprising Stroman got "only" $71 mill - not that it wasn't a tidy sum for 3 years, plus an opt-out.
