  1. Mookie's down year is 2021 now. 3.9 fWAR. 40 games missed. Slight negative ratings in baserunning and fielding, likely due to the assorted injuries. Even Mookie could start tailing off. It's those nagging little injuries like he had in 2021 that could do it.
  2. You do wonder where these rumors come from. If the rumors are accurate, we seem to come in with a lot of silver medals LOL
  3. Ah moon, you love to torture yourself.
  4. Well, we did get a decent late inning reliever on a 1 year contract at approximate market price, so we didn't pay a lot for German.
  5. Oh. To quote a very old SNL sketch, "Never mind."
  6. The Yankees probably fixed it so there would be no major league Rule 5 draft this year.
  7. Bloom has done some spending this offseason, just not any that stirred a lot of excitement. Paxton, Wacha and Hill have a total AAV of about $25 mill. Plus the exercise of Vaz's option.
  8. Me either. Especially since we have a player in house, Devers, who they should be signing to one.
  9. So far his bigger additions have been relatively small.
  10. Sol the net negative is what, about $5 million? Considering the variability of the measurements used, you might as well call it a wash.
  11. That may be exactly what Bloom expects.
  12. Never happening.
  13. The overall score on WAR yielded per dollar cost on those names would be very good, I think.
  14. I agree, but I left them out because I thought we were only talking about 2021 starting pitchers. Whitlock and Seabold are potential 2022 starters.
  15. If we count all the starters acquired for minimal cost, it would include Pivetta as well.
  16. A column in the Boston Globe yesterday shed some light on why this will be a protracted struggle. The players are going after some semi-radical changes, such as instituting a draft lottery to discourage tanking. Reportedly the owners are on board with a 3 team lottery but the players want an 8 team lottery.
  17. The names aren't exciting, but Bloom's strategy of acquiring cheap starters on short contracts seems like a sound one. They don't create payroll problems or cost prospects, so they leave the future intact.
  18. Looks like some Minnesota Twins bias in these selections! Kidding.
  19. What goes on between the owners and the players is a power struggle, basically.
  20. Everyone acts out of self-interest. The owners are interested in getting money from the fans. The players are interested in getting money from the owners. The fans are interested in getting entertainment-performance and wins-from the players. There's not much sentiment on anyone's part.
  21. One could argue that the hypothetical player notin is talking about is free to play in any other professional baseball league not controlled by MLB.
  22. The MLB payroll and payroll tax systems are unique, methinks. Are there any other industries in which companies whose payroll exceeds a certain level gets penalized for it? And that's just one of the quirks.
  23. I don't disagree. But one could argue that the fans let them get away with it. No matter how many times these negotiation breakdowns hurt the game, the fans keep coming back, keep paying more and making the owners and the players richer. We're suckers, in other words.
  24. I used to be interested in US college football, but I finally had my fill of all the corruption. Even if it wasn't for that I think it gets a little boring when it's always dominated by Alabama and the other regulars.
  25. No idea about that.
