  1. I'm not sure there are any hard ass managers left in MLB with Girardi and Showalter gone.
  2. Wong and Devers each had a double last night, since we're having fun with sample sizes. Schwarber is a regret for sure.
  3. Sandoval has had the dreaded setback.
  4. As of now they need a starter, a reliever and that rental bat. Let's go Brez.
  5. Bring back Bobby V! Or Farrell - he seemed like kind of a hard ass!
  6. The quality of the transportation and accommodations isn't really the issue. It's still 6 months of travelling back and forth across the country while playing 162 games. No one is saying these guys aren't well looked after. It's just about the effects of all the travel on the body.
  7. 2-5 in this tough stretch with 2 to go. We're not getting blown out in these games but we're not scoring many runs especially in the early innings.
  8. I know. It also sets up an inning-ending DP, and a force out at every base. The only real downside is that a walk would score a run.
  9. Crochet was in fact the winning pitcher against the Cubs but you called it lucky anyway.
  10. And that's a rabbit hole. So much was different back then. And it's not really fair to Gehrig to penalize him for not playing in non-existent games. I think the only sensible view is that players were not soft then and they're not soft now.
  11. You're right, but the OP didn't say he did. And to be really irritating about it, during his streak there were a bunch of seasons Ripken didn't play 162.
  12. The only problem is, your best hitter might be next up, they would IBB him and set up the double play again.
  13. Ownership bungled it in every way. They knew Betts was out the door, they also knew trading him was going to be a PR disaster. I believe they deliberately waited to trade him in 2020 until after a lot of 2020 season tickets had been sold.
  14. How exactly was the 6-1 win against CHC lucky? You're calling it luck because they were behind 1-0 after 6 innings? As for the Philly game, prior to the grand slam by Gonzalez, Luzardo had given up 1 hit. So 'pummeled' is a totally misleading description. What happened was he got wild and walked the bases loaded.
  15. One thing I wonder about is if we'll see more hitters sustain injuries like the one Casas did because they're swinging the bats harder.
  16. Kimmi can verify this, but I think the numbers show that the only time bunting yields more runs is when there are runners at first at second and no outs. Now, what if it's the bottom of the 10th or 11th and the road team didn't score in the top? Should you bunt then? I would guess the answer depends on who's up.
  17. Was Fred Lynn soft? He got the nickname Fragile Freddy because he got injured a lot. But there are very few Sox fans who think trading him to the Angels was a good move.
  18. How many iron men have there been? Gehrig and Ripken are 2 players out of tens of thousands. The vast majority of players have been non-iron. Baseball at the major league level is hard to play and hard on the body. There are a lot of short careers.
  19. I don't think any road team should bunt in Manfred Time. And it fits right in with an old school maxim - on the road you play to win, at home you play to tie. If you score 1 run in the top of the inning the leadoff man in the bottom of the inning is the winning run.
  20. I get that, but I think this is the response to the advances in pitching. And is it succeeding? The bottom line is, run scoring has been trending down for a while now. Pitching holds the upper hand.
  21. Tom Gordon holds an interesting place in Red Sox history. From a Stephen King novel to a pivotal spot in the 2004 ALCS.
