Yes. But the parallels with the Nomar trade are pretty strong to this point. It felt like a cloud was lifted when Devers was traded. Not that he's a terrible guy, but the situation was so uncomfortable that it just always seemed to be lurking there as an unhelpful distraction and you didn't know if there was more bad stuff yet to come.

I'll stick with the opinions of Cora and the rest of management over the armchair versions. I think the real ones have done an excellent job this year. -
New leadoff hitters are probably a platoon of Duran and Eaton.

I'm surprised you bailed on Yoshida so fast. He proved he can hit 800 against righties over 2 seasons. Positive regression was virtually inevitable. How long should the leash be? That's up to Cora and Breslow and the hitting coaches. They have vastly more data and knowledge than us.

Nah, we have Fred and we have other raggers to look after all that. You're supposed to be one of the reasonable ones.

Campbell had 263 PAs and Yoshida has had 128, after a long layoff.

There's still a reasonable chance for some positive regression by Yoshida. He was over .800 against eighties in 2023-2024 combined.

Yoshida does have a better track record. What exactly makes you think Garcia or Campbell can hit right handed major league pitching right now?

But signing Bregman seems like it was a very long way from a sure thing, especially since the total guaranteed money was significantly less than other offers he got. As with many things concerning the Sox behind the scenes doings, we'll never really know.

Houston reportedly offered him 6/156 or something like that. My Pollyanna take is that he really wanted to play for the Red Sox and Cora.

Personally I don't think they trade him unless they think his attitude is a real issue. They know damn well it makes the 2025 team a couple wins worse on paper. What muddies the waters intent-wise, of course, is that it was also an opportunity to shed a very large contract.

Devers stunk for quite a while after the trade. He's been hot as a pistol the last week or two. No one will ever know how much of an impact the trade had on the Red Sox psychologically, but for the most part they've been playing a much better brand of baseball since the trade.

The third catcher is just emergency insurance, it enables Cora to do something like use Narvaez as a pinch-hitter - like he did yesterday, very successfully I might add. Kelly is a mystery. Andrew Bailey must think there's something there he can fix.

If they're going to give up on him now they might as well release him. We all know he might start hitting. Why wouldn't he? He hit righties very well in 2023 and 2024. He's healthy. He's just rusty. Look at how Story shook off the rust after people were giving up on him. I think you have to give him a couple more weeks. That's just playing the percentages.

We're all just speculating. But Breslow has shown he's a pretty decisive guy IMHO. In any case it's only common sense to give Yoshida a fair shot.

I'm 100% certain that Yoshida's playing time is as much a Breslow decision as a Cora decision. They're obviously giving him a lot of time to get the rust off. Just as obviously if he doesn't start hitting soon he's in jeopardy of bad things like being left off the playoff roster if we get there.

Yeah, really. I'm pretty glad they didn't trade Duran, personally, especially with Abreu on the shelf. Depth is not such a bad thing.
