Every negative scenario is on the table, I'd say. We're probably only a game or two away from Devers being shut down for the season, with more white flags to follow. -
Our run differential has gone into the red at -5. The 2024 team has a great shot at being worse by some metrics than the 2022 and 2023 teams. That's going to be really hard for Sam to put a positive spin on.

Well, you're not really getting the part about the budget. The premise is that if Henry authorized a bigger budget and was serious about competing in 2024, they don't make this trade.

Denny, you really do have an incurably optimistic streak. Can the Red Sox possibly lose any of the games with the White Sox? Oh, damn straight they can. We were actually fortunate to salvage a split of our earlier 4 game series with them.

What I'm saying is that in the context of the Red Sox signing no one else but Giolito, this trade didn't make sense as far as the Red Sox needs for 2024. But when you add in the context that the Red Sox were prioritizing the budget above all else and didn't actually care about making the playoffs in 2024, it does make more sense. I agree that context is everything.

I didn't forget about the Bambino being a lefty pitcher. He's in this conversation too, yes. Ojeda had an excellent season for the Mets in 1986 and beat us twice in the 1986 WS. We got Schiraldi for him. Ojeda's Curse Factor has been underrated. Does David Price belong on the list? Unloading him was a financial positive and not a baseball negative. But there was another guy involved in the trade that was a rather hefty loss.

Hugh thinks the trade was 100% about the budget. mvp thinks the trade was about the budget and the fact they didn't really intend to compete this year. So I'm certainly not alone in my beliefs.

And their lack of caring is being rewarded exactly the way it deserves to be.

And the tight budget and lack of caring were further manifested when Giolito was lost and they did nothing about it. It all fits into the same gloomy picture.

moon, if they were really trying to be competitive this year, they could have: a) Kept Sale and hoped for the best. b) Signed Giolito. c) Obtained a second baseman some other way. (What they really needed was a good fielder, and Grissom is not that.) I get all the reasons that have been presented for the trade. I just find there are holes in all of them. I'm more and more convinced the trade was mainly a result of the tight budget and the lack of actually caring about winning this year.

Well, that seems like the most obvious explanation. But we have no idea how much Henry's budget limitations had to do with it, do we? And then we have the question of why Atlanta thought it was worth a shot if the Sox didn't. But that's just more going around the mulberry bush.

He's a first-rate defender on a team that has historically bad infield defense. I see a need.

So the hope was he pitches well for one year, he leaves and we get an extra draft pick after the second round or whatever it is? That was Breslow's big move to upgrade the rotation? I just don't get how that all makes sense for a team that needs starting pitching NOW. Not seeing much clever, personally. As the guy in Spinal Tap said, there's such a fine line between clever and stupid.

And Betts was irreplaceable, so that was kind of a problem in itself.

Giolito was a hugely questionable signing too, after 2 months of pitching batting practice, and a contract that guaranteed he would leave after one year if he actually pitched well.

Sam might just opt to go with humor, like when he told the press about Pedroia calling him to plead for some free agent signings and Sam laughing his ass off about it.
