    We can put everyone in that pile, I guess, if we assume there are other teams out there who are prepared to give back more than they get. But in general the best approach is to trade from an area of surplus to strengthen an area of need.

    There never were that many, though. With the Red Sox over the last 50 years we're talking Tiant, Eckersley, Clemens, Pedro, Schilling, Price, Sale...like I say, just think of the guys with HOF credentials or close to it. Bring up names like Beckett and Lester and that's when the arguments start...

    Trading Duran would be dumb because: a) this is a team that still needs offense in a big way b) there are other ways to acquire pitching which this team has-prospects and money

    Nope, logic fail. Since the Red Sox would be giving up those 4 years, you have an offsetting argument for keeping him.

    My definition of an Ace, based on who most fans seem to think is an ace, is a pitcher who has some chance of being a Hall of Famer one day. I know that sounds silly, but I think it's also pretty accurate.

    Soto, but it was a very different situation. -Soto is one of the best players in the game and a long-term proven commodity -Soto was in his contract year So yeah, it would be comparable to the Betts trade, except the Padres did much better on the return.

    Not sure what you're saying. Generally speaking, a 1.00 WHIP equates to facing an average of 4 hitters per inning. 1 gets on, 3 get out. That's elite level pitching, giving up only a .250 OBP, lower than Ceddanne Rafaela. With obvious variables like errors, double plays etc.

    Duran is 28 years old and entering arbitration years. And as you say, he might fall back to earth. And as notin says, he'd be more appealing to a win now team. No way you get any top tier pitching back.

    No, I was only responding to the point about expected hitters in the 8th and 9th. I will say this, I think it's very rare to see any manager bring in their best reliever in the 7th inning in a regular season game, and I believe the stats will back that up. Why they are reluctant to do so is a question that could be discussed at great length.

    Trading your best player doesn't usually make you better. To me that's a pretty simple concept too.

    Not offering complete player Mookie market value and then paying almost the same money to incomplete player Devers - it's all a part of the warped thought processes since Henry had his breakdown in 2019.

    Since 1.00 is an excellent WHIP, it would be more logical to assume the 8th is the 4-5-6-7 hitters and the 9th is the 8-9-1-2 hitters, which is quite different.

    Although it's not likely to happen, I like moon's idea of trading Yoshida to the Jays, bringing back Gausman, throwing in some money or another player to make it happen. To me that's the kind of creative move Breslow should be looking at.

    "Sell high" as a methodology is bullfeathers 😉, folks, any good investor knows that. Warren Buffett said you can't time the market. That's not how you make your decisions.

    Right, but very few players are even capable of posting a 7-8 win season. I do think it's a little crazy for fans of a team that is in such a dry spell to be so keen to dispatch their best and most exciting player. I get it, it's just armchair wheeler dealer fantasy/entertainment. The Red Sox have plenty of money to sign good starting pitchers. I'm really starting to warm up to the idea of Flaherty. You don't have to trade Jarren Duran to get Flaherty. I'd rather see them punt another season than do something as rash as trading Duran.
