  1. You plunk Trout if you're an Alex Wilson type. I'm not convinced that a 4-run lead vs. the Angels, with the guys they had coming up, is mop-up. Farrell gave Wilson the opportunity to show if he could be relied on in that situation and he f***ed it up royally. Really too bad when Bailey did such a good job.
  2. To me the obvious question about last night's game is, why not Tazawa for the 9th inning? I assume the answer is that Farrell saw it as opportunity to rest both Uehara and Tazawa. But is a 4-run lead in the 9th really a 'safe' lead, even though it's not a 'save' situation? Debatable I guess. One thing I do know is that Francona used to use Papelbon quite a bit in the same situation. He wasn't much more comfortable with a 4-run lead than he was with a 3-run lead. You get a couple of guys on quick and suddenly things are dicey and you're scrambling to get your closer ready.
  3. Are Sox players like Salty really any more gassed than comparable players on other teams, or does it just seem that way because we see our players every day? Wieters has played more than Salty. All-Star break is coming up soon.
  4. Like I say, they don't go away.
  5. Also, he looks like he is capable of pushing his numbers to healthy levels by the end of the year. If Ellsbury ends up with an OPS of .825 or higher, with all those steals, he should have no problem getting at least $100 million. Recency counts for a lot with many GM's looking to make a splash.
  6. The Twins' terrible record against the Yankees goes hand in hand with their terrible postseason record, a lot of which is also against the Yankees. Bottom line is, I'm sick and tired of the Twins getting bulldozed by the Yankees every year.
  7. Sure, agreed. The thing that always amazed me about the Gagne deal, though, was that we had to give up 3 prospects to get one guy who was going to pitch about 20-25 innings for us.
  8. I would definitely like to see us add a good reliever. To me that's the one area that stands out as a potential weakness. Adding a starter or a bat would be great but it'd be so expensive. I think our offense is pretty damn good as it is. Unfortunately history also shows that deadline deals for relievers can prove to be very costly. Larry Andersen and Eric Gagne come to mind. The Rangers traded Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter to the O's for Uehara. I think they'd like that one back.
  9. Fred, when you get a minute please read the thread about the 'Twins under Gardenhire' in the Damn Yankees sub-forum and leave a comment there. I look forward to hearing what you think about the Twins record against the Yanks.
  10. Pretty hard to ask for a better July 4 at the ballyard than this one.
  11. Iglesias refuses to drop below .400.
  12. 6 innings 2 runs for Webster.
  13. For the same reasons any manager has to take some of the blame when a record of failure reaches this magnitude.
  14. Much of the hyperbole was for comic effect.
  15. Well, I knew it was bad. But until you pull up the actual numbers you don't realize what a mind-blowing abomination it really is. Some of you may even disbelieve that these are the real numbers. But they are, God help us, they are. (Since 2002) Regular season W-L 21-58 RS-RA 302-443 Postseason W-L 2-12 RS-RA 36-69 Total W-L 23-70 (.247) RS-RA 338-512 (-174) Let it sink in...23 wins and a minus 174 differential in 93 games. Unsurprisingly, the Twins have not won the season series once since 2002, though to be fair they did eke out a 3-3 tie twice. In 2001, the Twins last year under Tom Kelly, the Twins won the season series 4-2. It's an outrage that Gardenhire has been permitted to keep his job through this 12-year nightmare.
  16. Three or four girlfriends and enough cigarettes to asphyxiate a small city? Yikes, man, I think you better cut back on the girlfriends.
  17. Jesus Christ, Will...cut it out with the Singing Frog routine. (Bugs Bunny cartoon reference)
  18. Yes, Miller has been a pleasant surprise, and the Sox deserve some credit for not giving up on this guy. He's sort of like Bard in reverse.
  19. I concur with the list. I would add Dempster to the list of surprises. He had that rough stretch in May but has rebounded superbly, logging 45 innings and a 3.40 ERA over his last 7 starts. Lester has been a disappointment but there's still hope. Very disappointed with Hanrahan and Bailey.
  20. I would expect the Red Sox main target is a late inning reliever. It only makes sense. Cherington thought the back end of the bullpen was an area of need so he added Hanrahan and Uehara. Hanrahan is a goner. Bailey looked like he would pick up for Hanrahan, then he bombed out. Uehara has been excellent but has durability questions. Tazawa has been solid but not quite as good as hoped based on last year. Miller and Breslow have both been solid. But for the stretch run another proven late inning reliever would be a big help.
  21. The Angels are on their way to their 7th win in a row tonight. I think they are a tougher assignment than the Padres right now.
  22. The 42.5 year old Jason Giambi steps up to the plate for Cleveland. I'm thinking, 'How can this guy still be playing?' And he promptly hits an absolute rope into the right-field corner.
  23. Or as I like to explain it to myself, "This can't be as stupid as it looks".
  24. All logic dictates that they should win no more than 85 games. But I still don't feel comfortable writing them off this early. They're like an ailment that keeps coming back when you thought it was gone.
  25. And there, in the charred ruins of Talksox I saw some comments start to pop up...and lo and behold, they were caustic and full of sarcasm!
